  1. I put some of that aluminum brightener on a rag and tried to clean off the timing marks. Sprayed it with carburetor cleaner too, and rubbed it with fine sandpaper. I still can't read any marks on it.
  2. I was going to Covington with a load of wood chips one time, 1979. I was driving a '74 Transtar with a VT903 in it and halfway up this really steep hill called Buffalo Ridge it just quit. Like it was out of fuel. Stopped dead in the road. I knew I had plenty of fuel, I think it was 4 loads I could run from Dillwyn to Covington before I had to fuel, maybe 3, but anyway I knew I had plenty. However, even though I knew I had plenty of fuel and there had to be some other problem I looked in the fuel tank anyway and there was no fuel to be seen. Then I went around and checked the tank on the passenger side and fuel was running out of the top of the tank as soon as I unscrewed it. About that time a car pulled up behind me and I told the man in it that I was broke down. He offered me a ride to the nearest phone to call headquarters, and I accepted. This was long before cell phones of course. I told him just let me go put that fuel cap back on and set out my triangles first. When I walked back up the hill to the truck I put the cap back on and noticed that the fuel had gone down a lot. So I got in and tried to start it again and it fired right up. I went on to Covington and dumped with no problems then went by the shop so they could fix that vent. I just loosened the cap a little until I got back, but it had sucked the left tank completely empty and the right tank was still completely full.
  3. Oh, almost forgot- while I was cutting the bottom off of the aluminum can with my pocket knife this girl pulled in the driveway. She was asking for directions to Winfall, but I told her I was busy and didn't have time to talk and sent her on her way.
  4. Latest update, I'm just waiting for tank rubber. Meanwhile I took the vent out of the old tank and shook it. Nothing happened. Then I tried to blow through it. Nothing happened. I wasn't even sure if anything was supposed to happen, because I'm not even sure how they work. But I cut the bottom off of an aluminum can and put the vent in it and sprayed carburetor cleaner in it until it was covered. Now when I shake it it rattles, because it has like a check ball in it that was stuck. And I can blow through it easily now, so that's good. And I tried to take a cab marker light off because it wasn't working but the screw is stripped in the screwdriver slot and won't budge, and that's bad. But at least the light started working, so that's good. If I can get them off I'll see if I can find LED lights the same size and replace them all. And I should probably replace the generator that's on it with an alternator. And I will have to find a starter soon, because the Bendix doesn't engage about half the time, so you just have to keep trying until it does.
  5. So, what is this "electronic throttle body fuel injection" of which you speak? I don't care about stock or original, I just want it to run like it's supposed to.
  6. I wouldn't have a problem using a steel tank, but I couldn't find an aftermarket steel tank available anywhere and if I went with a used one, if I could even find one, I'd have to do all the cleaning and sealing process before I used it.
  7. Funny you should say that- I read somewhere when I was online searching tanks and algae and rust and sludge and gunk and cleaning tanks that you actually could use drain cleaner to clean the tank out with. But the aluminum brightener seemed to do a great job.
  8. This was about all I could find about sealing new aluminum tanks. I think I'll just put the thing on when the strap rubber gets here and hope for the best. If I have issues I'll have to put a tank behind the cab I guess.
  9. Wow, I guess I am lucky then. I only have to go from the blue dot to the red balloon to get non-ethanol. It's only a couple inches on the phone.
  10. I wish I could swap in a 6-71, that would be the cat's ass. The only reason I don't is not having the knowledge, skill, money, shop, talent, and know how.
  11. I would, but I heard you don't use sealer in aluminum tanks, maybe it doesn't adhere to the aluminum or something, I don't know. I had 2 quarts of sealer but I already sent it on its way. So I think, from what I'm reading here, if I stick to non-ethanol and use gas treatment I should be ok.
  12. So, my new gas tank came today. And here's the issue- I called 4 States because they didn't send enough rubber to go under the straps. I misunderstood, I ordered 2 but they sell it by the foot, so I only got 2 feets. Anyway, the guy asked me if I was using it for gas or diesel. When I told him gas, he said "uh-oh, this tank is only rated for diesel". I thought it said "gas or diesel" when I ordered it, but apparently it didn't. But it said "fits Ford F600" and they were all gas powered. I don't even know exactly what "rated for diesel" even means, but Dave (maint1) sent me this- So I'm going to use the tank- any thoughts?
  13. They recommend premium gas in the Zinamobile Nissan Titan so that's what I always put in it. It's more expensiver at the pump of course but it might be cheaper in the long run.
  14. Possibly. Brocky advised me to only use non- ethanol in it, like I use in all my small engines. I was advised to do that years ago with small engines by someone with much knowledge about such matters, and haven't had any issues yet. I'm thinking I'll get the 90 octane non ethanol from the Sheetz just up the road, put the lead additive in it, a can of Sea Foam periodically, and Sta-Bil in the fall.
  15. My tank sealer came today too. And it's non-returnable. Bummer. Guess i'll ask around or put it on marketplace. I was going to work on the International today but the wind is fierce! Gusts to 47 mph they said, whoever ''they'' are. I want to take the top off the carburetor and check for sludge, and check the fuel lines. Dave told me it was easy to check the float bowls for sludge, all I have to do is take 4 screws out, but what worries me is my hands. I have arthritis in my hands so bad i'm afraid i'll drop a screw or something, drop one in the carburetor and the truck will be on marketplace. I've dropped a camera or two, amongst other things, so dropping a screw would be no problem for me. So, with that being said, here's some girl by some highway somewhere.
  16. I gave the .22 rifle that my grandfather gave me to my niece. It's a Remington Fieldmaster pump, a very nice rifle. I do have a 700 Remington .30-06 but I thought that would be overkill.
  17. Uhh, yeah, I'd say you did! 🤣 I'm going to try to pull the top off the carburetor without destroying anything and take a look too.
  18. I went ahead and ordered the rubber to go under the tank straps when I ordered the tank. I looked in the gas hole with a flashlight and I could see all these dark blobs "swimming" around on the bottom of the tank. I poked them with a stick- a clean stick, I didn't want to contaminate anything- to see what happened and they would kind of break a part. The sample in the aluminum pan didn't come from the very bottom either, I just loosened the plug on the end and let it drip in the pan. I never saw such a change as that gas made overnight. So obviously there was no rust, it had to be algae. The pick-up tube lacked about 4 inches from reaching the bottom of the tank, so that would leave a lot of gas in the tank, maybe that had something to do with it. I probably could have put that tank right back on it after I cleaned it out with the acid and been fine, but we decided to just keep the new one and put it on when it gets here.
  19. I think it is a Red Ryder, I bought it at Walmart to scare away all the feral cats that used to be lurking around at the old house. Then neighbors moved in next door.
  20. I did it, but I cheated a little. I only had a little bit of trash to burn, and it never got hot enough to melt the jug. So I shot a hole in it with a BB gun.
  21. I ordered 2 quarts of the sealer in the morning, had to get 2 because one would do up to a 25 gallon tank. I didn't know how big the tank was, but I knew it was more than 25 gallons. When I tried to cancel the order that same night they said they would try but the order had already been processed. When I looked this morning it had already been shipped, so I'll just ship it right back when it gets here. Ordered it from Amazon.
  22. Oh, I forgot- turns out the tank I took off was aluminum too. I just assumed it was steel, because he was talking about the rust in the old tank, and the fact that it was painted black. But it's aluminum, it was so light when I drained it and took it off I was thinking I had gained some super powers, but no, I have not.
  23. I think I'll try that- need to put more beer in the cooler first.
