  1. Rod,Go to Mack and ask for King Pin set 501SQ45A. Fits FA,505 FA,511. Gleemans No for PAI AKP-9520 pin set. Keep away from Meritor stuff it is differentt to the old stuff. I just replaced the front axle ( found a new axle beam 538) with narrow centre bolt centres on the old mack 2 weeks ago king pins, new steer springs, tie rods bearings ect. took me 9 hours by my self. It dont get any easer as you get older but i did it in a day..... Mark
  2. Grant Why don't you ask Mack if they still have the 2 piece crosmembers. They fit in the same holes and are flat still use the same bolt pattern. I replaced all of them on mine, They never break and you can replace them easy. They wern't expensive..... Mark
  3. Rob That is the way they do it all the time, every day. all day. Takes a bit of practice....... Mark
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S24TDTtyzs4 Don't know if this has been posted before............. The easy way
  5. Welcome to the road transport industry........ Fun isn't it........
  6. I think the Quad duplex ect was rated at 700f/lbs touque or there about I have seen some bigger engines in front of the older boxes some lasted most eventualy died. I have seen a quad box with a fuelled up 237 but it was owner driven it lasted fair few years. But when it went bang every thing inside the box was totally wore out..............
  7. http://12.158.118.195/maint/Bulletins/11-sb422004.pdf fjh is right the only adjustment to stop the knuckle binding on the beam. As a straight pin at either end when the bushings/ bearings are worn there is nothing you can do when they are worn. It is a good idea to keep the adj in specs as to not have too mutch float as to pound the thrust button to bits.........Mark
  8. A piccy of the dredge dad's company built and operated in the making of Port harbour. They worked for Gahagans Dredging of New York from 1958 till 1960. The day it was launched. One of the D73T dozers, They had 2 D7's and two draglines. Got a soft spot for the old D73T's . They pushed 16 hours a day for 6 days a week keeping the sand away from the pipe outlet. Trying to find the photos of the Draglines...... Mark
  9. HK. Plenty of nostalga there. My father had 2 22RB's back in the sixties when he had a dredging company . When they dredged the Port Kembla harbour. Learned to operate them in my teens. Got my DLI ticket for one in the early 70's when i worked for Brambles. Done a lot of hours on them. Nothing like 8 hours with the squeeling swing clutches and brakes. Makes for good co ordinationfor your hands and feet. I still have a go on a 30 RB " air controlls" now and then when i can. Can still cast the bucket twice the jib length. Will always be my favorite piece of plant......Mark ,,,,,, Heres a good one
  10. Talking of sealed. A fellow i work with has a volvo and they supplied one without a grease nipples $ 500 bucks worth. He asked me what i thought as they said it would be ok as that was the way they were. I said good luck. Any way i know that you can get away without greasing them for six months, and then they fly to bits. Talk about stupid. I will keep me old mack and grease it every weekend. Mark
  11. Old Dog I would pull all the valves an inspect them for pitting / rust also clean the stems and guides while you have the head off. just to be shure. may bee a quick lap. Might save another head gasket. Just a thought Mark.
  12. Ossablt I have seen them on B models and i know they were on early R models, That is the 4 point mounting We call them Eagle Claw mounting here in OZ. I have only seen them on heavyweight 44's and up Don't know when they came out. Mark
  13. Ducky Sandblast them. Unless you get rid of ALL the rust you can paint them with all of the expensive paints and it will come back. Blast them. Just prime and use an enamel chasis paint, GMH chasis black is the cheapest It will see you out. They were un painted inside at the factory anyway. Mark
  14. Ducky. Get a air chisel with a blunt / flat tip and run it along the corners. You will be amazed at the stuff that comes out. I found that the corners are the ones that hold it together. once you get the rust out of the corners it will come apart. I don't like using heat. Mark
  15. Ok Jim, you have done it now, Been trying to stay off the easter eggs. Off to Macca's now....... see ya. Great burger!....... Mark
  16. Tim. that was a few years ago still hurts when you put a lot of effort into a job. The turky went to sleep and wern't insured. The only reason i didn't give him a flogging was the aircleaner was hard against the door and i could not get out quick enough. It took me 2 years to get him. He won't forget me in a hurry. I just put it in my "stiff shit" book and got on with it. Mark
  17. One for Monty. Only last september 2 weeks before RTA inspection. Been ignoring the warning signs for a few months. Panic stations. the place was like a bomb hit it. got it all good in time 1 week off the road. Finaly fitted grease nipples every 12" along the chassis fixed the rust problem.Should have done it 20 years ago.
  18. Rob. Funny enough we were only talking about keeping the truck for that sort of thing only last weekend. I suppose it started from the common Divorce thing, walk away and start again? No. buy the whole lot back? Anyway i could not afford a new truck payment and a house payment too at that time, so fix truck keep it going it progressed from there. Probbably should have scrapped it years ago, But it was always easy to fix and keep making a dollar. I probably became lazy. Who needs a new truck. the one i got don't make, and still don't make any more money than the fancy new ones. I know that truck has done over 3.3 million k's not a bad innings. it would be hard to get rid of it but hey. is it just a truck? Have to think about it....... It was always a GO truck not a show truck... silly ain't it.... Mark
