  1. have someone turn the key to start, power should be on the little wire, that's the exciter wire. at the same time power should go thru the solenoid to the motor, check for power on the l shaped piece going from the lower lug to the motor. that will tell you if its the starter thats bad or the solenoid. if it's not going thru, you can take the back of the solenoid off by taking the 4 bolts off cover and clean the contacts and the flip washer. it will make sense when you see it
  2. if the solenoid is cluncking take a test light and see if power is going thru to the motor . if it is the starter needs attention if not the contact washer "the flip washer" in the solenoid needs to be cleaned or flipped and the contacts cleaned. common problem, will cause a hit or miss start
  3. most older cummins have kicker solenoids on them, usually on the block or firewall

  5. I've been replacing outer frame rails from the transmission area back and rebuilding cabs and bodies on the 1900 & 4900 cornbindersfor a few years in Trumbull ct . the computer and electrical systems on the new trucks are killing us. Thank god most are warrantee right now.
  6. check the stroke of the valve, if it overstrokes it will slow down. try not pulling the lever all the way and see if it speeds up

  8. my department has a 1978 CF600 we use as a fundraising truck. it lost its spider gears last night and spagettied the carrier. anyone have an idea where i can locate one. any help would be appreciated
  9. if I remember right , the center line of the plate {king pin } should be 6" forward of the center line of the tandems.
  10. it shouldn't have a long bolt , two separate bolts. tighten the pulley side bolt first then the back, the adjusting bushing should slide and bottom out before it hits the ear.

  13. the satellite truck in connecticut is the 1982 American la France maxi-water unit. It belongs to the Long Hill Fire Dept and I happen to be the Chief of the department.
  14. body bound bolts, use a reamer to drill final size so the bolts have to be hammered in

I built one on an old horse at work and used a 1" plate. notch it so it goes both inside and outside the frame so you can weld it on the inside and out and then run triangle gussets inside plate to frame. by the way we tow a 25 ton trailer hauling a 309(i think) cat excavator or a read screen-all
  16. nope, that was Vinny's truck D-111 350, 12 speed I was a mechanic there, I did a lot of work on that truck
