Mack 44k brake conversion and drum interchange number help

Recommended Posts

I have a Mack with the drums mounted on the inside of the hub. Having a hard time finding the 2702 drums. Was wondering if there is a kit to make it like a more modern set up so you do have to remove the hub a bearings to do a brake job. Also if anyone has interchange numbers to a gunite 2702 drum that would be helpful. Thanks!

Find a truck like yours and use the vin to buy hubs for outboard drums... Spend the money. It may be cheaper to buy a back half from a salvage yard, and have spare rear ends as well..

I wish i had my notebook from the Superliners  that i did..   just get a vin from another R model with what you want and start the search..  all you need is the last six of the VIN.

To be clear... When i said buy a back half.... I am NOT  saying to cut your truck apart.. just strip the parts...  Ive done it several times..  i bet you dont have to find an old Mack..

definitely the way to go.. a rear cut off . inboard to out board means different hubs which mean bearing s/races etc. individually purchase = = $$$ .cut off with good bearings/ races/ hubs / rims/ drums/ misc ; more cost effective long run.

'80 with 44's -- are we talking budds / daytons ??? also makes a difference. daytons (inner/outer fasteners)going to outer drums (budd uni- mount ). start buying all the forgotten stuff individual -$$$$, complete cut=off it's all there one package.  more $$ up front but way less expense at the end.

It’s got bud wheels. Getting a cut off is out of the question as I live in Alaska. The cost to get it up here would be so expensive. I think for now I just decided I’m just gonna get the brake drums and get it back on the road. This winter, I’m gonna rebush the trunnion and maybe then I’ll look up and figure out the hub situation.

thank you for reply and update. some times it's a challenge for the BMT crew to reply not knowing all the tiny details and conditions. having budds already makes the conversion a tad easier i'm thinking.

No problem. Thanks for all the replies. Does anybody have an interchange number for the 2702 brake drum? 2702 is obsolete. Having aNo problem. Thanks for all the replies. how soon/ desperate is this brake job needed? having budds = unimount studs/ nuts ;;or inner/outer fasteners ?  out board drums deeper?longer studs ? I don't know for sure . can't correctly answer whether hubs are same using different studs.

My experience is the hub is always different inboard to outboard. Because the drum is between the hub and wheel on outboard, the flange that the drum mates too has to be further in than with inboard. In otherwords, the wheel has to be the same distance from the frame, regardless of if it mounts against the hub or the drum is sandwiched in between. That makes the hubs different.

Call Watts Mack. Give them your VIN. They will tell you what you have and what you need. I think they have done this many times over the years for people. I have a friend who switched an 88 R686 with Budd steer and dayton drives all over to hub pilot. He spent 25 minutes on the phone with them and had all the answers. Parts were in stock. In his case he was able to reuse his existing wheel bearings. I wouldn't try to guess on something like this and/or get a bunch of maybe answers. Go straight to the source and save yourself a bunch of time and headaches. I would assume they would ship you the parts. I wouldn't want to pay postage or freight on new drums from PA to AK but I would imagine they could sell/ship you everything you need sans the drums and they could tell you the part number of the drums you need. Then you could source those locally.
