Excellent thanks for all your help  I’m going out in a while just for now I’m going to clean up the shoes with  gasoline then start making calls of drive down there hopefully today I got a sneaky suspicion this truck will be in here a while… oh well I’ll start stripping the interior

Bob. Are the brakes a 4515 ? If so, spring kits are everywhere. Also how did you try to find the wheel seal number ? Stemco has cross reference charts on-line. Also.. is your DM a '79 ?

seal number still Visbal on old seal by picture.

Yeah I  guess your right

And your thinking, is it to early for a bevy (drink)

Well it is now, still dark out side

I have been offline for a few days as apparently a cracked phone screen and diesel don't mix

However I'm back now spinning cocktails the wrong direction down under

Onto a  more serious note

Seals

I'm no expert so I'll offer some worthless opinions

Yes it has a wear ring

Talk of wedding bands makes very nervous, so I won't go there, once is scary enough

I reckon that band is mild steel and is used when you don't use a grit gaurd to take up the different gap

740-GritGuard_800_540x540.jpg.4b4216058620452d7ebe5bf70db06088.jpg

The grit gaurd is the bit on the bottom, if some joker has got every last mile out of it before pulling stumps on the old seal and replacing it, I think your looking at the remaining bit as the rest wore away

I reckon they went to the local parts store, armed with measurements and the seal in there is the result

And Bob, they either didn't clean the drum and spider up or it was leaking for a long time before you owned it

So your definitely not unlucky, I think a dud repaire was done last time and your seeing result of this

My bucket of bolts was far worse than this once and now I wouldn't hesitate driving it anywhere now, a bit of money and a lotta work

The good news is you can still get these seal kits easily, just need to know your axle rating, as in how many pounds and the kit should be able to worked out from there

Brake springs, no drama

Just get as close as you can and it should apples

Oh, if it was my truck, while it's this far apart I would drop the S cam out. Reseal it, make sure the S cam is straightish. Get the slack adjuster in a vice and wind it around and around while pumping it with grease until all the dry old grease is out

I usually pump mine with diesel and then re grease

When it's re assembled, the brakes should snap back otofwhenffrom when they are on, fixing a dragging brake on the side of the road os no fun

Anyway, I'll leave it in your capable hands

Paul

I used the the stemco grit guard seal and band for years, never a problem with it.   terry:MackLogo:

Thanks for that Geoff  they’re bolted on linings that might make things a might  easier

not always ! if they are alum shoes (shouldn't be). worse part is cleaning  /going over with straight edge to make certain shoe deck is flat.  not recommended using air  tools to tighten, blocks are thicker then normal still crack easy (so I've heard).! LOL yep been there done that.

Is there a number on the band ???

what band ?? beach boys/rolling stones ? if you are asking of the wear ring seal band answer is no; it's should be part of seal kit.  for a hobby truck; I would go with the stemco seal with in itself no tools required.

Just now, mowerman said:

And no, I was not planning on using air tools on them, but as mentioned, they may come already riveted

aren't they 3/8th brass bolts ??  Mack rears that age should be bolt on linings??

They look 3/8s hard to say thier dripping in oil and slop right now

anchor pins solid with snap ring/retainer cup/felt wiper in retainer ''one each side of anchor pin ?? shoes are full circle holes for anchors ,not half circle with two springs ??   shoe kit one large spring at cam end  shoes have replaceable wear pads = flat plate with two pins ?? ZEP makes a tub/ shower cleaner = works wonders on grease. parts cleaners today are for saving the environment not cleaning parts. in the day you had to wear rubber gloves when washing parts =

Yes I got a tank it’s got dirty cleaner in it right now and yes I ordered 5 gallons of soap for it from Amazon it’s very powerful and yes you have to wear gloves otherwise it burns my skin

And yes there’s only one spring at the top bottom is pins with snap rings

bet you have some good words trying to reinstall that one spring.  used to have large pair of spring pliers . another easier method  ;personal  opinion only is to install top shoe with anchor pin (no need at this time for snap rings). install spring on top shoe and bottom shoe =flip bottom shoe into place. saves finger tips when attempting spring install.

Yeah, thanks for that. I used to have a spring tool for a car. I don’t know if I still have it. I can’t find it. I’ve got way too much shit around here and I could never find anything. I lost my grease gun when we moved here 20 year ago it’s out there somewhere

If your real careful you can put wear ring and seal in without the tools, just can't get to heavy handed or you'll bend them up.    terry:MackLogo:

had a good size collection of old bearings after cutting cage ; removing rollers; the inner housing from different applications fit axle housing for a safer seal ring install.  for new seal install without fancy tools , the old seal cleaned up (sometimes)  a trip to wire wheel removed outer paint just enough to fit hub bore behind new seal . 3/4 dia rod with flat plate welded to it acted as part of seal installer when tapping against old seal.

Bob... I looked in my Library of Mack books and I dont have info about wheel ends for any '66 Macks.  What range of years shared the same wheel end parts ?

The shield on the back of the hub resembles those on the B Model.   And the inner seal as well.. i am in no way smart about B Models.. i have done a lot to a few of them, but not enough to post correctly.
