HarryS Posted April 19, 2016 Share Posted April 19, 2016 When repacking the bearings I noticed the hub area between the inner and outer bearings was full of grease and also the screw on outer cap. It seemed like an excess of grease but the O & M manual says to pack them that way. I don't know if that is because of the quality of grease back then or if that is still the preferred way to do it. eddeere Posted April 19, 2016 Share Posted April 19, 2016 I had the same question when I did the brakes on mine My service manual says the same thing. Most said to just pack the bearings. Viadislav seemed to have the best answer. " the axle factory specialist said with the modern grease it was not necessary to fill the hubs". It's a '60. No problems with the wheels, it sat for a number of years and I was getting ready for the show season (Macungie). As usual I did the job and then checked the manual. I am currently working on a R model that was ready to go ( next joke please ) it is like pulling teeth getting parts for that. I would not want to think of finding new parts for a B...... Freightrain Posted April 21, 2016 Share Posted April 21, 2016 When I did mine some 15 yrs ago, I just packed the bearings well, then put a glob in the middle just for good measure(I do the same for my pickups/cars). 50K miles later, I've had them apart a few times through the years they are still good shape.
