realwolfdaddy Posted February 8, 2013 Share Posted February 8, 2013 I've Heard of Allison Diesel engines being in over the road trucks in the 70s and how strong they were and that they were taken out of trucks and replaced by Cummins by Allison under a recall. There was an article in a recent (within the last 2 years maybe??) edition of WOT about Allis-Chalmers road engines.....They were painted purple if I remember correctly???? I'm very familiar with Allis Chalmers but I haven't read anything about a over the road truck engine. I could be wrong though. They were painted purple and given the name of Big AL.My recollection was that the engine was great if it ran in a tight rpm range but not so good in truck application where the range is 500-900 rpm. 57 bcr Posted February 8, 2013 Share Posted February 8, 2013 The only Allison engine I remember in a write up,was years ago in W O T,they did a story on a V-12 Allison airplane motor installed in a Sterling tractor.But that wasn't a diesel,for sure! The Allis-Chalmers diesel was derived from the Buda diesel,which A-C purchased,lock, stock,and barrel for use in their products.From what I heard,they were real "hot rods",for awhile and then they would fail.This was the early '70's and the "Big Al" could be ordered with a rating high as 450hp.The article stated that they had better luck with them when they detuned them.A 1693 (TA) Clatterpillar could make 425hp all day with little problems.No detuning,no nuthin'! I believe they did replace them with a Cummins,as you say.Just a few of them escaped "boat anchor" status.
