  1. :mack1: You are talking about an overdrive triplex, you can use the under, direct and over in the back box with first to fourth in the main, then when you are in fourth in the main box and over in the back box, you just shift the main box to fifth, which is overdrive in the main box. it really gets confusing to try and explain the difference between a trt 72 and a trt 720 In both tranny's the back box is a underdrive a direct and a overdrive. Hope this is not to confusing ! Terry
  2. Good shot Trent. I'm wondering if when it was discovered there was not have enough weight available with this setup, they staged the photo? of course reducing the elevation of the winch booms would lower the pulling angle.

:mack1: I can promise you there was nothing staged about that picture, the company that i work for assisted the mover, we had a rubber tired loader pushing on the back of the locomotve. It was moved a few years back in Omaha. terry

    IT'S OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, sorry. Just been a long two weeks of messing with it.

After giving up yesterday, I sprayed it with penetrating oil. I went out this morning and it near fell off with my fingers. Yes!

So, after I get the little tailhousing off I'll be replacing the seal.

I do need both speedo gears though, as the drive gear is chipped pretty bad and is probably why it tore up the driven gear.

    Drive gear: SW447250 5 tooth

    Driven gear: 154-P1 13 tooth

I think part of the problem with the leak is the fact the rear bearings are loose. I can't get enough umph to see slop in shaft, but I left the tailhousing off and installed the flange again. I could move the rollers a bit on the rear bearing. This is telling me that I need to remove some shim. There is one large shim and one .004 shim. Not sure if .004 will be enough, and if I need more I can surface grind the thick one, leaving the .004 to add back in if need be. I don't have any books to show what is what and since tranny is full of thick grease I can't check rotational torque. I think this might have something to do with why speedo stripped out. If the shaft was walking, then the gear would be out of location, causing mis alignment and possible problems(chips in teeth).

I know the tranny has some slop in main box, as there is an identical double bearing arrangement on the back of it. Don't think I can go that deep and fix it too?

Thanks guys. :mack1: You can take alot of play out of them boxes by checking endplay on the countershaft, take pto cover off and mount a dial indicator on box to check against pto gear, at the very back of rear countershaft is a cover with shims under it to adjust endplay that will set both countershafts at once, don't have the specs. in front of me but should not be to hard to find. Terry

  4. :mack1: When you get the nut and yoke off you can unbolt the rear cover and put the seal in on the bench, alot easier. when you slide the cover off there are two tapered bearings facing each other with a spacer in the middle, smaller spacers as the bearings wear down to set the preload. At the very most the rear bearing might slide off no problem, just be sure spacer is in there when you reassemble. Terry
  5. My Dmm with a 237 has the same popping sound in the air cleaner, I swear to "Todd" that its a mack trait for a "well seasoned" mack engine. We just put head gaskets in it this last fall, it seems to run strong though.

:mack1: Have had loose exhaust seats do that at an idle or when you let off the throttle, might last a week or 5 years! Terry

  6. :mack1: If it was a gas job originally it will be pretty slow with a diesel in it if the rears have not ever been changed, also depends if the duplex is a direct or overdrive. Also the gas tranny is a smaller version of the diesel trans. Gas rear ends will be around a 7.00 ratio and a diesel can be mid 4.00 to down to high 5.00's or low 6.00's terry
  7. thanks for all your comments.i have got new trunnion caps on the way and think i will change the red bush's to rubber. my parts man has told me the bush's only come in 8 1/4 or 6 5/8 but my red bush's are 7 1/2???can anyone help with the right bush maybe a part number . thanks again

:mack1: Just take the 8 1/4 long one and cut it off to the right lenght. terry

  8. :mack1: The early 12 spd. had 2 sticks with the reverse, direct and overdrive on an air button on the main box stick, the other stick was just a lo-lo and direct box, it has a total of three boxes bolted together, a fairly long tranny. The later ones were the same just the lo-lo was a switch on the dash. It sounds like a complicated tranny but once you get on to it you will love it. When you are empty you can shift the main box all the way to 5th gear then go into overdrive on the air shifter, but if you are loaded then you just use the overdrive button for your upshift splits. first direct first overdrive, second direct second overdrive and so on but once your on to it you will know what gears to skip. terry
