    glad to see the topic interrupted by "wet/dry" liners !! almost got tempted to ask .NOW which one is this engine dealing with?? dry with honing the sleeve may be removed a number of times : to obtain a perfect fit.all 6 - could be involved. rent/borrow a tool ?

    they along with many other fleets were a common sight on east coast. building a set of the first gear B model fleets from new England ; that was one I had.

    Bye Bye "vacation"😱, look at the bright side: you'll be so busy in 6 months there will be no slack time for TV/ lazy days. you will be in such great shape ; won't need the gym. why do you think I go to the farm 25 miles away daily. the better half only works one day a week !!!LOL at least on the farm there is peace and QUITE

    glad you got balancer off safely. the rotating by hand is usually attempted when engine in chassis / radiator there or not: space limited . engine on floor (improperly blocked ) could be dangerous when hand rotation of damper done. block roll over . depending how bad those couple of wallops are , could effect balancer function.

    I must be old !!LOL , I remember seeing these as daily drivers going down highways. DM600 in picture was a new upgrade for Beard.

    Had the calendar. picture sure cost Mack in the end. besides the green/yellow paint scheme & dual steer which at the time was new feature due to weight laws in CT; the body supports in Hi-Ho letters drew lot of attention. possibly why these were pictured ,not O&G in calendar

    really depends on the conditions how. engine in frame with radiator in front limiting work area ? in frame no radiator? engine out ? important issue is DO NOT beat the balancer. with bolts removed ; had to make sure I put that in. don't laugh someone said " you didn't tell me take out the bolts!" good penetrating spray /& emery -sand paper ; clean off hub center . I've been able to rotate by hand the balancer work it forward off hub.(this is when radiator still in place. ) rail it with a hammer and the balancer won't balance any more.

    also take in to consideration the fact it's a fire truck not a OTR unit. fire call goes in -the boots go on- arrive at the fire scene which is NOT like being a state worker who sits in the truck all day; Fireman is OUTSIDE to operate the controls. emergency over = truck back to fire house (time short) not 2hr drive. heater an option with legitimate reasons .. when new of course as a new restore heater/ canvas cab a must, nice progress also.

    failing memory some what correct; seems the 315 hp was tip turbine without water , air only. ??? things like hp/ boost/ and all the NEW computer stuff wasn't paid too much attention then. it was new ;mechanics looked at it and walked away. needed repair ; figure how to fix it. didn't have U tube to answer questions.

    possibly durability, less prone to external damage from debris ;let the radiator take the hit. less inventory in parts .

    B615 built "62- - '66 with only 575 made.

    I don't know if Ozzie Bartlett = service foreman/manager at waterbury Mack is still with us or not. there was one knowledgeable person. I had/have the highest respect for that man still today.

    Dave must have gray hair by now!!! He started at the Waterbury location WAY back then. on rare occasion I have gone by the Hartford dealer and wanted to stop and say hi to him, staying 5 more minutes in that city put an end to the visit. think he goes to jimmy's diner in watertown for breakfast on saturdays.

    you made it through the day ; which counts out the statement "didn't get anything done today". also took care of other appointments. I'd say you got a lot done today. do what you can while you can. I have a square baler all apart at the moment and had to cut the work day short due to some issues. back tomorrow ??

    time for pressure washer to make accurate diagnostic before a "ripe and tear" project being new to the unit ;; only my thoughts. never cared for taking things apart where dirt is . possibly due to starting at Mack when 17 yrs old as an "assistant apprentice mechanics helper" put me behind the controls of a steam cleaner for many hrs,clean it /run it and make darn sure where the leak is. layers of dirt also act as a "winter coat on housings making internal temps higher. cleanlyness is goddlyness.

    back then I had an international backhoe which made the project a tad easier, down pressure from front bucket did it every time. today no more backhoe or ambition. have been the route of recip saw and cut the tire.

    think the idea from Mack was wonderful . but for an individual operator to purchase or a large fleet to buy as a parade truck , didn't fly. trucks back then were thought of as a needed money maker; not a parade truck. a couple came through Mack while I was there ;where they went , don't remember. sadly it takes a moment such as 9/11 to get back to the flag waving ; make America great moment. I did build a DM800 /dump model for the owner of Waterbury Mack with the stars and stripe theme ; that and two of my own were in the parts room display case. The F&F Dm8oo mixer I still have the other two were taken.

    another case of one pictures worth a thousand words. and yes there were actual dashes back then with sections of padding.

    just another example of " why keep all these pictures, I'll never need them" was bad idea ; darn. had boxes of literature while working at Mack trucks '69-'75. every time a move took place more stuff got thrown out. there were a few of the real stars and stripe macks that came through.

    simple solution ' paint them different colors , put them on front lawn and call them yard art.
