Yesterday morning about 6:45AM on my way into town, I saw orange barrells blocking the entrance to a USFS day use recreational area. My wife does work that involves the USDA. At work around 9AM, she clicked on an often-used link to a reference page on USDA's website. Page not available. Why turn of webservers and mailhosts? Do they pay those bills by the day? How is the government so efficient at shutting things down ???

Agree with the Straubs! I was introduced to that by my Clearfield County family members. I seem to recall that Lowenbrau is one of the original Oktoberfest beers. I always buy some, primarily to have the excuse to sing "Here's to good friends..." around the house repeatedly and annoy the wife.

There was a nice, bright yellow B-61 at the gate that looked like the offspring of these two....

I'm a pretty strong maybe; have never been before. I'd be taking my daily driver there. I have never been to this show - I would likely be tent camping. Anyone know how that scene is? I have another obligation up there (near Harrisonburg) the weekend before, so I'll have to see how it all works out.

My mother had a lot of family in Allentown, and as a child I spent a good chunk of each summer there. My wife and I are going on a roadtrip to New England this week, and we're breaking up the trip by spending the night in the Allentown area. Sadly, no time for a museum visit or anything. But, we'll run the dogs around Jordan Park, and then I'll show her where my Mom grew up. I had an uncle (my Mom's uncle, really) who did many years at AFD at an ancient firehouse. He would let me, looking back, "run wild" and provided me with great memories. He would have an Engine in the short driveway, and let me run the lights and sirens. Whee! I do remember the pole, and hoofmarks in the back of the bays where stalls used to be. Guessing by the neighborhood, he worked at Central (until the last part of his career). But looking at Google maps street view, the building looks bigger and newer than I remember. I think, with some info from RIch, that the building was rehabbed, perhaps? My visits would have been in the 70s and early 80s. That was the main question - Did the Central station move or get rehabbed? I'd like to walk by there. I believe the engine that I would play on was a 1957 B model. I did find an article in the Morning Call about a guy buying a 1957 fire truck from the city. His name was Charles Noti, and it sounds like over time he'd bought a few fire trucks and other city auction items. He's since died. Wonder what happened of his collection?

I don't really have an interest in people's political, religious, or racist views, so I don't read the off topic / odds and ends boards much. If I do, I usually skip threads that have topics that indicate these subjects. I have a a few hard working friends and acquaintances that work in Dublin, and they try to make a quality American made product, so I avoid the anti-Volvo posts as well. These are my choices and I take responsibility for what I choose to read. The only thing that is really annoying is when topics have vague titles, and it's only after I start reading a post that I realize it is a political thread. Not to point fingers, but an example is a recent post "A letter from my NAPA dealer", which was 100% political whereas I thought it might be of importance. If there were a sub-forum of the Odds and Ends forum dedicated to the political, religious, and racist topics, that might be handy and smooth out the feathers of some of the complainants. Hopefully, sexist posts will be encouraged throughout the site.

Hey, Paweł If you look at the red superliner "J274" that was posted to your model thread, above, you can see the fuel stickers that whiteboy is talking about. On the red superliner, the stickers are on a flat piece of metal attached to the fuel tank step. That was a common location. Most truck stops sold chromed or shiny long flat pieces of metal (about the size of a European license plate?) that were attached to steps. They were usually hinged, but I'm not sure why. I guess so you could hear "squeak squeak" when you hit a bump - or maybe so they'd give way if you kicked them. It looks like the superliner's stickers are old and faded. I want to say the single state fuel sticker setup pretty much went into effect around 1995, and that's when the rows of stickers went away. Maybe someone else can confirm the date. I still have most of my old paperwork, but I wish I still had that piece of metal with all of the stickers. Something to hang on the wall of the garage.

Hey, T - It sounds like a good reason for a get-together! I can see a cookout in that field, and then everyone run off with pens and paper to get serial numbers and inventory. Perhaps followed by a "move 'em out" get together with folks that might have trailers or other rigs to help move them to your property. (I will miss the Gehart meet next weekend - booo!) Anyhow, good work and good luck with your grandparents.
