  1. http://gearheadgrrrl.com/2015/08/25/the-maxidyne-era-comes-to-an-end/ A 6 speed Maxidyne/Maxitorque combo with low holes sounds like a lot better long term bet than a Volvo automated manual!
  2. Kinda sad... After a half century of enjoying the reducing shifting of Maxidyne engines and wide ratio Maxitorque transmissions, the only choices left are close ratio transmissions that require twice as much shifting or the questionable durability of Volvo's automated single countershaft transmission.
  3. So the wide ratio (60% split) Maxitorques are no longer available?
  4. Removing Hillary from the ballot would only occur if she was convicted of the crime, and so far not one of the horde of U.S. Attorneys has even brought charges.
  5. Looks like the manufacturers with their own proprietary engines are lobbying to skew the regulations to squeeze out Cummins.
  6. I suspect the KW and Pete legacy cab's days are numbered... The new cab is already going on over half the trucks they sell.
  7. Despite the EPA 2010 emission standards being pretty much the same as the Euro 6 standards, the engine offerings here are stuck at around 600 HP while in the rest of the world Scania and Volvo have soared past 700 HP in a no holds barred horsepower race. Worldwide, almost every country is adopting the Euro instead of EPA standards... Are the US EPA's oddball standards stifling engine development here?
  8. Yup, already perused their web page! I suspect the V8 would be a better fit in a conventional than Volvos long and tall D16.
  9. Just the thought of one of these mighty V8s in a Superliner...!
  10. Forget who made them, but those were fairly common in the 1950s. IIRC, it was an attempt to proportion the weight between the axles.
  11. Other than Volvo's mistake in trying to take over Mack, they built some pretty good trucks. I've driven the F7, Cargo, Isuzu, and "club" cab Renault and the F7 was clearly the best of the bunch. Damn reliable trucks too, we had a boat hauler that was running them to around 800,000 to 900,000 miles before they replaced them.
  12. Is that one of the NZ made house moving trailers I've heard about?
  13. Also the lightest and most efficient conventional. I still have that Valueliner brochure somewhere, gave me something to dream of while suffering through Freightliners!
  14. That's pretty typical in the first builds, Ford wants to go slow and make sure they get it right.
  15. I've got an inquiry in at Ford media regarding the missing GCW. In the meantime, rush out and order an F750 tractor and hustle up a three-nines spread tridem trailer...
  16. If you're trying to avoid EGR you have to go back to 2003 and older, which means you'll be totally rebuilding at least a 12 year old truck. That means you'll be rebuilding for a year or so when you could be out making money in a newer truck instead.
  17. I'm amazed that todays drivers can be won over by a fancy interior and big sleeper but can't figure out that wages and benefits are more important. Me, I see a sleeper and that sets off the alarm bells that the employer expects me to live in the truck!
  18. Instead of new trucks, why not give the drivers better pay? I drove crappy trucks with gutless engines and no air conditioning, radio, or power steering for years because the pay was good and I'm enjoying the pension now!
  19. Noticed the specs and price showed up on Ford's web page the other day. While the specs are typically detailed, they list maximum GVWs but not GCWs... Does that mean I can hook up a set of loaded triples to a new F750 and Ford will still warranty it?
  20. If you're running at 80,000 pounds, a Pinnacle with the MP7 should work well, substitute an MP8 if you're in mountainous country. Might want to look at the air lift pusher axle they just introduced.
  21. The new Macks are a good deal if you stay away from Volvo's half baked ideas like "M-Drive". Go with the triple countershaft Mack transmission or the Allison if you need an automatic, and unless you do nothing but highway running, go for the Mack rear axle(s). Where are you going to run and at what weights?
  22. They build Western Stars there too, in fact Freightliner's original Swan Island plant complex now builds only Western Stars.
  23. An EM7 if it's running right should pull 73k pounds 65 MPH... Sounds like yours isn't running right.
  24. The Eaton 7 speeds top 4 ratios are about the same as a 9 speed, the bottom gears have the wider spread. Works OK on the highway, but marginal off highway.
