The stew went well,it was delicious and everyone seemed to have a good time. Had a little bit left over, but not a lot. There was enough where some people took some home with them though.I'm tired as a dog,and tomorrow i've got to boil the pot out again, clean it,and reseason it,but i'm gonna call it a day now and go to bed.

Just got in ,i've been to Midland City,Al. with A load of beams, reloaded shingles at Peachtree City,Ga. to Oxford,N.C, then loaded Kyanite at Dillwyn,Va. to Negley,Oh,then had a two pick up reload at Ambridge and Leetsdale,Pa coming back to Lynchburg,Va.I was going to drop the trailer in Lynchburg, but I got there at 5:00 o'clock and they went ahead and unloaded me. 'Course I only had 2 beams on. It was still 100+ in Alabama and Georgia Monday, but it was 56 degrees this morning (Wednesday) when I got up in Pa.about 4am and continued on to Negley. I actually turned the heat on for A little while. Had A toothache all day yesterday, but after taking alternating handfulls of aspirin, tylenol, and motrin it wasn't too bad today.Got A dentist's appointment in the morning-actually looking forward to it!

It's been an exciting weekend around here -i've raked leaves, flattened some cans and bagged them-not all Anheuser-Busch products by the way, I think I saw a Pepsi can in there-and cut some grass, piled leaves in the garden and ran the tiller through it, and made a squirrel feeder. The apples, pears, and peaches are gone and I wouldn't want them to go hungry. Besides, if work doesn't pick up I might eat the squirrels.
I went to Fremont last Sunday and after I got unloaded Monday morning I went to Brookfield and picked up a Roanoke load and unloaded in Roanoke Monday night. Then I was off Tuesday, no loads . Went to Richmond Wednesday morning and loaded some structural steel going to Columbia, S.C. Unloaded there Thursday morning, then went over to Nucor steel in Darlington and picked up some flatbar and channel going to Madison Heights, Va. After I got that off Friday morning, I went to the shop...then I went home-no loads.
My computer still only works half a$$ too -hey, kinda like me! Everything that worked off a usb port seemed to be malfunctioning, first the webcam, then the scanner/printer. I was afraid to try my digital camera because I figured it would fail to operate properly too, but it did work, and I took a few new pictures to illustrate the exciting events described in this blog entry
I had the truck here last week, and told otherdog to keep an eye on it...the second picture is 9 hours later and he hadn't moved-still keeping an eye on it! He's a good dog. There's an armadillo by the bush, but he paid no attention to it because I just told him to watch the truck.
I cooked a "chicken on a can" Friday. I usually use the old wood/charcoal powered gas stove behind the shed, but I decided to try the anti-freeze grill this time. The oven is much better, and faster, probably because of the insulation around the oven. It makes a delicious chicken though, just coat a whole chicken with "the rub", drink part of a can of of beer, put more rub in the beer left in the can, stick the chicken on the can and put it on the grill, or the smoker oven 'til it's done.
Too bad the leaves don't just blow next door! They have none, I have many.
This is my squirrel feeder, loaded with corn. Stolen from the cornfield by the road at that bridge job in N.C. I posted pictures of a while back by the way. The spot where there's no leaves is where the pickup was parked.
    Otherdog-the beagle that is.

...yeah,this is a giant steel mushroom on rt. 51 in Pittsburgh,a random shot from Phillipsburg,Pa ( -Jobyna asked lots of questions about this picture-lots of people have probably never been through Phillipsburg, and wonder what it looks like! ),a couple of Mack dump trucks on I-77 in W.V,a big Mack all-wheel drive wrecker in Broadway,Va, the load of cement mixers I picked up in Malta,Oh, the old Cedar Grove Truckstop on rt. 60 in W.V,the old truckstop in Ansted,W.V,and the old weigh station just east of Ansted. I have stopped at both of these truckstops when they were open.
...and for the weekly report,I went to Orchard Park,N.Y, Brookfield,Oh. back to Roanoke, then to Zelienople,Pa,Brookfield to Roanoke, and to Conneaut,Oh. and Brookfield to Roanoke. Riding my a$$ off in other words! Got to go to Petersburg tomorrow and get a load going to Fairmont,W.V. and reload at Brookfield for Roanoke. Then I'll make one more turn and be off on vacation for a week. Normally I wouldn't have to leave on Sunday after making three rounds, but I agreed when they agreed that i'd be off when I got back from the second turn on Thursday. Sometimes you got to negotiate

Went over to Wal-Mart a while ago to get some film developed. I'm gonna stop looking at the cameras that are right next to the counter where you drop your film off-now the camera I paid $199.99 for is down to $129.99

What did I do this week ,if anything?...oh, I remember- I went to Negley, Oh. with a van load because my return load from Follansbee,WV to Richmond had to be in a van. Didn't have any 48 footers at the yard so I had to pull a 53. Tight spot at N.B.Handy in Richmond, got to blind side back to the dock, and it's much easier with a 48' trailer because it's so cramped in there. The windows in the sleeper and motorized mirrors really come in handy there. Then I went to Seneca,Pa. with a load of treated lumber.Had to pull a 53' flat up there because they were putting 8 new tires on my regular trailer,a 48' aluminum Ravens. Nothing like a Ravens,in my opinion.I keep my beveled wood and coil racks in the tool box and my tarps , straps, and long 4x4s on the front of the trailer, and I had to transfer the beveled wood, coil racks, and tarps to the trailer I was pulling because I either had to bring back 2 new trailers from Kent,Oh. or load coils at Sharon,Pa. Got to Seneca that night and when I got to 84 Lumber there wasn't room enough to get off the road if I pulled up to the gate,so I figured i'd turn around and go back to the Wal-Mart and park,at least until somebody ran me out of there. I didn't see a good turn around spot and went on to Oil City and turned around, down the 14 mile 21% grade, then had to drag the load back up the 21 mile 19% grade to go to Wal-Mart.Funny thing was,it was only 6 miles to Oil City from where I turned off of 322 onto 257,and it was a mile to 84 Lumber. And I never did need the wood or tarps,I ended up going to Sugar Creek,Oh. to get a load of bricks going to Lynchburg. Now I'm loaded with Kyanite on my regular trailer, the one with the new tires, to deliver Monday in Cleveland. I even got a chance to replace a leaking air line on the mixer this evening, and took the power steering line off that was leaking. I'll try to get a new one made tomorrow and get it back on there-the Appomattox Railroad Festival and parade is next weekend.

It's about time to leave for Avon,Ohio. Could've left yesterday, but I got up at 4am to go to Chesapeake to unload, went by Kyanite Mining on the way back to load, and got back to the shop to get fuel at 4:45. I'd already ran about 450 miles or so and put in a pretty long day,so I just parked at the truckstop and came home since I only had a couple more hours available to work. I don't usually do that, but I was tired all day yesterday for some reason, probably because I went to bed about 8 o'clock Sunday night so I could get up early. I woke up figuring it was time to go but it was only 12:01am so I went back to sleep, only to wake up at 1am,2am,3am then 4 when I got up,as tired as if I'd never been to bed at all.I should have left Sunday evening and went on to Chesapeake but I didn't want to leave on Easter Sunday. Maybe I can make it all the way to Avon today.

OK,the title is overhyped. Got my last roll of film developed yesterday, and some were taken so long ago I don't remember what they were, or where I took them, but here's some of them for your enjoyment anyway.
Been very busy this week, felt much better after finding out Big Tail was gonna be all right. I went to Orchard Park Monday, then to Brookfield to Roanoke, then from Lynchburg to Orlando, then loaded 60' beams at Nucor in Huger, S.C. going to Fort Washington, Md.( D.C. area ). When we got to Fort Washington Friday I thought we were at the wrong address, but unfortunately we were not. It was at an apartment complex, and we couldn't figure any reason for 60' beams to be there in the first place. Turns out there was a large sink hole behind the very back building, and that's where the steel was going. We had to blind side back in off the street into the apartment complex, then back about a quarter of a mile, including 3 sharp bends, to get back to where we unloaded. There were cars parked on both sides too, to make it more interesting. I only took the one picture of this site, after I'd gotten unloaded. When we backed in there was a white Ford pickup parked in the spot just to the left of the dumpster in the picture, so that was the tightest spot to get around. They unloaded us with a boom truck, ( there was three of us ) and it was an all day job. Billy Bob and myself left there at 4:30 pm, right on time for the worst of Washington D.C. rush hour Friday evening traffic.
Now, what you've all been waiting for- pictures...and my comments, best I can recollect- and sorry, I forgot to resize the ones I took here with the digital camera.
a salmon fillet I smoked on the grill, indirect heat on both sides, strip of bacon on top, with pans of water underneath to keep it from being completely dried out.
the home made hot sauce I made today and put in recycled bottles. All the peppers came from my garden- and Jo's happy, because when I do this stuff I don't make a mess!

At least besides the aching tooth and a heat wave that leaves me drenched in sweat every time I chain down A load or tarp A load, and the fact that it's so dry here -my garden just withered away, and I've only cut the grass A couple of times, last time a couple of months ago-I have A little good news.I left the truck at the Cat shop in Lynchburg last night so they can turn the horsepower up from 475 to 550.You would think it'd make A world of difference, but it's hard to say.The last Cat I drove was A 435 and when it was turned up to A 475 you couldn't tell A lot of difference.I know that's not near as big A jump, but I've taken A truck in to be worked on before, they'll put it on the dyno and check it, get you 20 more horsepower and it was like driving A different truck. I hope that's the case this time-it's A big ol' pretty truck, but it lays down like A big ol' dog when it sees A hill.

Dang it! Got up this morning and looked at the peach tree in the back yard, which was full of nice big peaches as recently as yesterday evening, and it was stripped bare! They weren't quite ripe, just starting to turn red,but apparently they were ripe enough for whatever ate them. A few were still on the tree half-eaten. I don't know if it was squirrels, racoons,a possum,or crows-crows ate all the cherries off the tree, and the rabbit about got the beans before I started spraying them with the hot sauce and soap. Should've sprayed the peaches too I guess.
Got a little shower of rain yesterday, barely enough to settle the dust, but every little bit helps.
I must be off now,to start that long trip to Orchard Park. I'm already dreading that long hard ride up rt. 219,but i've gotta go.
might have the answer here-a fake owl!
and the runaway ramp,Ridgway,Pa. rt. 219
...so much for the fake owl idea-owl looks so real even I think it's real-there's three crows on the ground and a squirrel in the peach tree right now. Apparently they're way smarter than I am,I spent almost $20 for that owl. $20 will buy a lot of Texas Pete!
back to the old pepper spray!
ok,final update before I go to work-Jobyna insists that the owl has to actually be in the tree for it to work.It was only about 20' from the tree at first. I say if the squirrels were intimidated by the owl at all,it's close enough-but I moved it over into the tree anyway. Now we'll see who's smarter around here-me,her,or the squirrels.

Not much good to report. Been at home since Tuesday, but just got a load going to Orchard Park, N.Y.
And how about the ticks this year? More around here than i've ever seen. Can't get Diazanon any more, but I tried some other kind of poison and it doesn't seem to have any affect.
But everything i've planted so far came up, and the garden is growing like crazy. I put a second picture of the garden, taken from the back porch, because it's raining again-first was taken Friday, second Sunday morning. The beans have nearly doubled in size!
Now not only do we have lots of ticks, I have to worry about creatures like this when I go outside! I think it's a non-poisonous garter snake, but i'm of the opinion the only good snake is a dead one. The dog was barking at it about 4' from the garden, under the rose bush where Jo was cutting flowers yesterday. I applied the shovel to it's head.

it's way past my bedtime, but i'm waiting on another youtube video to download. It's really crappy, but I have to go through a long process to do it.Maybe i'll get a camcorder with my tax refund to help stimulate the economy. If I don't go to jail forever that is-I did my own taxes online, for the first time ever.Used Turbotax, and it wasn't too bad.If I don't end up in jail...I shouldn't,I followed the instructions step-by-step so I should be ok.
Anyway,I had to put a tape in the vcr and play it,pick out the parts I wanted and tape them on another little camcorder that uses a small tape,a little bigger than a cassette, then play that back through the vcr and record it with my digital camera, then transfer that to the pc and download it to youtube. The original tapes are old, from the mid '90s when I had the mudbogger.I could get them all put on dvd's,just never have. So by the time I do all that they end up looking pretty bad by the time they get to youtube. If I get a new camcorder i'm gonna try more bigger better mixer shots, maybe a drive by even-if I can find a good used tommy gun. ( I am joking )

...but it's hard to find time! I usually run three trips from Va. to Ohio one week and two trips the following week. Then you catch up on other things on the weekend, and it's off to work again.I got home about 1am Saturday, got to bed around 2am,back up at 6:30,and went to Troutman,N.C. to the ATHS show.So the only way I'll get a tee shirt is if I buy another one, unless all you other guys don't-no,I'm joking of course, that just wouldn't be right!By the way,I mailed the truck show pictures to the diesel gypsy Monday morning,so check his site periodically.
  14. other dog
I talked to Old Bill, the Diesel Gypsy, this morning on Skype so I feel a little better about not being in Winchester. The case of beer I bought didn't hurt either. Then I went over to Altavista to mail him the last "Ice Road Truckers" tape-I put the " Trick My Truck" B-model episode on it too. Also had a few extra copies of "Wheels of Time" and ''Old Time Trucks" to send, and it cost $14 and some change to mail it. And that was the cheapest way to mail it. The faster 'express mail' was 40-some dollars,so I told the guy at the post office to strap it on the mule's back and send it on it's way. Maybe it'll be there before Christmas! Then I stopped by Food Lion to pick up a few things, and almost kept it under $100-total came to $100.04. By the way,do any of you guys have Skype? Or as Paul Van Scott once said "It would be good to know if anyone's reading this"
  15. other dog
...well,it's different from "Saturday" anyway. It's someone else's turn to use that anyhow.
I took a load of piling to Point Marion, Pa. Monday. It's on rt.88 just across the Pa. line a little ways from W.V.,near Morgantown. Yeah, one of THOSE jobsites-you had to pull down there, back down a hill to the crane right on the riverbank, then since there was ankle-deep mud everywhere they had to pull you out with another truck after you got unloaded, then you had to back up another hill and onto the bridge while they stopped traffic for you to get out. I had to go from there to Macedonia to load,so I went up rt.88 north to rt.21,then west on 21 into West Virginia. 21 is a pretty good road across there. It runs into 250 and I took 250 to Moundsville, then rt.2 north to the interstate. First time i'd been on that part of rt.250 in years-about 27 or 28 in fact. I saw the "Thelma and Louise" turn I mentioned before was a 15 mph curve and the grade was 11%. The curve has been widened since then,i'm pretty sure. And I don't think the guardrail was there. And I know the trees weren't up over the guardrail then because it just looked like open spaces ahead when you were coming up to the curve, and the road just looked like it ended, right there. And I think it was at least a 20% grade then...and I don't think it was paved ( now i'm kidding ) I took a picture of the curve with my 35mm I keep in the truck, but haven't got it developed yet.Hope to do that today and get the picture on here.I don't have my scanner hooked up,but I can take a picture of the picture with the webcam.
After that journey I went to Triadelphia,W.V. with a load of beams. Delivered to the West Virginia department of highways shop. After I got unloaded I asked the guy that signed the bills if they ever went down rt.250,like from Moundsville to Fairmont. "Oh yeah, all the time" he said."They didn't send you that way did they? If they did,boy you got *%#@ed! That's not a good way to go in a car, much less a tractor and trailer...'course we go on lot's of worse roads than that,-"(he liked to talk, wish I'd had longer to chat with him) . I said "oh no,I didn't come that way-I went across there in 1980 or '81 and said I wouldn't go back across there bobtailing- I was just wondering if it was still bad and those tight turns were still in Cameron and Littleton, turns I could barely make with a short wheelbase cabover Mack with a 42' trailer". He said one town,Cameron I think, had changed things and he wasn't sure about the other.I only remembered the one town, and don't even remember the name of it,but like Bollweevil said it took all the room that was there to make that turn. I came into town going south, and to stay on rt.250 I had to make a left turn right in town and the road (street) was narrow, pole on every corner it seemed, cars parked on all sides it seems. He said " well ,you must remember the hard right turn onto the bridge at the bottom of the mountain, that was a hard turn to make,a 90 dgree right onto a narrow bridge at the bottom of about a 2 or 2 and a half mile downgrade-lot of trucks wrecked right there.Lot of truck drivers got killed on that road-looks like a short cut on the map,or their dispatchers would send them that way". No,I didn't remember that turn onto the bridge at all.The two things that stuck with me was the curve coming out of Moundsville and that left turn in that town. I mean '80 or '81-that's 27 or 28 years ago any way you look at it,and it's hard for me to remember what I did last week sometimes. The road atlas shows 250 as a designated truck route today, but unless something's changed I just don't think I could get across there if I wanted to now, driving a 42' long Peterbilt pulling a 48' spread axle trailer.
These pictures (pretty bad-I really need to hook my scanner back up,but I usually use the digital camera ) show the curve going north on rt.250 heading towards Moundsville, the 11% 1 mile sign,Moundsville down below after the sharp curve, and a load of the coils I load at I.D.S. in Macedonia,Oh. all the time for Roanoke,Va.
As with the steepness of a hill, the pictures don't really show how steeply the road drops away to the left in the pictures-I was going to take a picture of the septic tank truck in front of me after he went around the curve to show it,but he pulled over right in the curve and stopped,so I went around him.
I did look at this spot on Google Earth and it shows everthing very well, especially if you rotate it around until you're looking at it from the north, then tilt it towards you-awesome!

I'm just mad...and angry...irate... and hurt-I don't know what to do. Really nothing I can do. Jobyna just popped me upside the head, then threw the phone book at me after I told her if she wanted to leave I'd help her pack, and haul her stuff...where ever,as long as it was away from here. Not the Brookneal phone book either, she went with the much, much larger Lynchburg book, complete with the yellow pages. I told her she was lucky she's a woman,or she'd be dead right now,cuz i'd have killed her ass.
This dog here has been here longer than I have. I remember the first time I saw him, standing on the front porch looking in the door grinning-he had an over bite or something, and he always looked like he was grinning. He was as big as a shetland pony and there wasn't a mean bone in his body. He was just a big overgrown puppy, loved to play. His tail was about 4 feet long,we always called him "big tail". When ever i'd come home he'd meet me in the driveway like Dino meeting Fred Flintstone. He chased cars, but he was very selective about which ones he chased. He'd be laying in the back yard sound asleep, but when he heard a particular vehicle he'd jump up and run to the road and chase it. Most he paid no attention to. He never bothered anybody or anything. We fed him,and I wormed him several times, because you could count every rib he had at first, but afterwards he was fine and healthy.
He was a happy dog, living a dog's life. Then the a-hole family moved in next door, with the whiny little brat-the one Jobyna sprayed "Off" on before, and he ran home crying like she'd sprayed him with high test gasoline and handed him a lit sparkler. She called me Tuesday crying when I was on the way from Birmingham to Pittsburgh and told me the dog had jumped up on the little bast-oh,might not oughta say that here, little...uh...kid next door, and his fat a$$ bitc...uh,oops-er,momma called the animal control officer to come get him. Never mind that they'd been playing with him when he jumped up on him, throwing toys to him,and he'd bring them back.
Animal control (the dog catcher) came and put a noose around his neck ,threw him in the back of the truck and hauled him off. She said if nobody claimed him in 5 days,he'd be euthanized. Killed-put to death-for doing nothing!
I wish I could go rescue him,but like my momma said, if I went and claimed him the next time he jumped on the little bast-sorry,I meant whiny ass little brat, they'd just sue me. I have less than an acre of land,no fence, and he's never been tied,so he'd probably go crazy or strangle himself if I tried to tie him. I'm glad I wasn't here when they took him away. I've been known to act first and think later-like the time I threw that big mug of beer, mug and all,on that softball team in the Red Lobster in Lynchburg. But that's another story.
Ive asked everyone I could think of if they wanted a dog-nobody did. He's a good dog-I liked it better when he was on the front porch barking at sun up wanting breakfast than since the sorry a$$ good for nothing deadbeat neighbors moved in...needless to say, they're not on our Christmas card list. I hope they're eaten by bears...just kiddin'
On second thought,Old Bill told me to always be honest-I really do hope they're eaten by bears. I thought a lot of that old dog.
Then I found out today that Rick Wright passed away Monday, the 15th. from cancer. Hope somebody has some good news...
    Big Tail update-good news-
    http://www.humanecampbell.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=910519
I called animal control before I left Monday to see about rescuing Big Tail and they told me to contact the humane society. I called them and I talked to a very nice man there, totally unlike the dogcatcher who picked him up, and seemed to enjoy her job way too much-she's the one who told Jobyna the dog would be euthanized in 5 days, which was totally false.
The guy I talked to at the humane society told me they had to hold him for 5 days before they could do anything, to give the owner time to claim him. If he wasn't claimed in that time then he became the property of the county, and would be put up for adoption. He said they only euthanized animals that were considered mean or dangerous and "that's a very friendly dog". I said "I know". I wish I could get him back myself, but i'd better not. I am gonna make a donation to the humane society though, and perhaps pay for his shots and other boarding fees that have to be paid before he can be adopted, that way he might be adopted quicker. If no one takes him i'm gonna get him and sneak him down to the shop so he can be a junkyard dog. He always told me he wanted to live in upstate New York though.

That's in answer to the question "how's it going?"
I'm sitting here waiting for the air conditioner guy-after calling about 4 different places,I finally found one in Altavista that said they'd be here sometime today, but I have no idea when.
Called Jeff too. He said the parts for the truck should be in today,so I won't be going anywhere today. Not only was the head gasket blown, they're putting a camshaft in it too because that had a lobe wiped off. He sounded very disgruntled,as there's no warranty on it.
Been trying to find a cheap car,the engine in the '94 Taurus that my son was driving gave out,but I don't think there's any such thing as a cheap car anymore.
At least i'm not in jail and nobody's shooting at me to my knowledge-always a bright side.

I must be off-Jeff just called, and i'm still sitting at home drinking coffee. He said when I get around to going to Lynchburg to unload the load I dropped Friday night they're gonna reload me there for Boca Raton,Florida so i'd better get going. I'll try to take a picture of a palm tree, everybody's probably tired of snow pictures.
OK, here's some snow pictures to look at until I get the palm tree developed-

Man,what an adventure I had today! Last week was pretty routine, went to Triadelphia with a load of piling,Galv-tech back to Lynchburg, then I took a van load of kyanite to Orchard Park, and brought a load of hay back from Edinboro,Pa. to Altavista for Stacy Compton, the race car driver. (ok,that part wasn't so routine) He drives in the Craftsman truck series this year. I had 580 bales in the 53' van.Hay is scarce around here because of the drought.
So I left Sunday going back to Point Marion,Pa. with another load of piling.I told Todd Friday I didn't want to go back up there because the job site was such a mess.He said this was going to the other side of the bridge, across the river from where we unloaded before,so I said "OK,maybe it'll be better"...WRONG! When I got there this morning, after running rt.119 out of Morgantown which is crooked as a dog's leg,I saw the crane sitting there and said "that doesn't look bad at all". Then they told me they parked the crane there over the weekend in case it flooded. When they walked the crane back down over the bank right to the edge of the river-actually on a platform of crossties on a pile of rip-rap in the river-it didn't look so easy anymore. No wonder they moved it in case the river got up. I had to back down straight to where the crane was at first, then cut the trailer over to the left...or right, depending on how you look at it. The problem was a great big hole they had dug on my left and the chain link fence on my right,so I had very little room to turn the cab. I had to pull up and back up several times, working the trailer over a little at a time. I finally got backed into position and unloaded, and of course the bank was so steep they had to pull me back up it with a bulldozer. I took a couple of pictures, but they're not developed yet.
When I left there I had to go to Galv-tech in Pittsburgh.I was going to take 88 up to 21,but I didn't think I could make the turn onto the bridge when I came out of the job site,so I figured i'd just go up 119 to Uniontown and then 51 north. And I thought the first part of 119 was crooked! I kept hearing the dump truck drivers that are all over the area saying "southbound at the wall" or "northbound at the wall" and had no idea what they were talking about. I found out pretty quick though-a little ways out of town I got to this curve to the right with a big concrete wall on my right, and it took every bit of the road for me to get around it-if i'd have met anybody in it somebody was going to have to back-up.
Got to Galv-tech and was the only truck there, got loaded pretty quick and was going down rt. 40 somewhere between Uniontown and Keysers Ridge when the engine light came on and I lost most of my power and my engine brake was doing little or nothing. I struggled onward to Keysers Ridge truck stop and pulled in and checked the fault code-intake valve actuator malfunction. Jeff said to try to make it in and take it to Cat in Lynchburg,so I did. Only took about an hour longer than normal, got passed by everybody on the highway. When I dropped the load of coils in Lynchburg I tried to phone home so Jobyna could pick me up at Carter Cat.The phone rang, and rang, and rang-no answer, not even the answering machine. Billy-Bob was at Handy tarping his load when I dropped the trailer and offered to give me a ride,so I got him to pick me up at the Cat place and he brought me over to the store two miles from here, over on 699.He could turn around there easily and go back to 29 and continue on to Duluth,Ga. I walked the two miles home. In the dark. By myself. Only one dog came after me and he turned out to be friendly, even walked with me for a couple hundred yards. When I was about a quarter of a mile from home my phone rang-it was Jobyna. She said the phone hadn't rang all day and didn't have a dial tone.I told her I walked all the way from Lynchburg.
My investigation found that the phone line was pulled part of the way out of the wall plug. The line goes behind other dog's (that would be the beagle, not me) bed and aparently he had gotten tangled up in it and pulled it loose. That's all right,I needed the excercise anyway.

Only made one round this week. Thought I was going to Lisbon, Ohio or Mercer, Pa. with treated lumber Tuesday, so I lollygagged around here in no particular hurry to leave, but when I got to headquarters I had a load going to Roxana, Il. WTF?!! If i'd known that I would have left 2 hours ago! Brought lumber back to Moneta.
Some of what I saw along the way-
some trucks on rt. 60 in West Virginia
this used to be known as "dead man's curve" on rt. 60. Used to be a lot of truck traffic on this road before I-64 was finished.
    trucks at the truckstop
    W.V. coal train
    a colorful Peterbilt
barge on the Kentucky river, near Paducah, Ky.
a cement mixer at the Pilot in Oak Grove, Ky.
    a field of dozers
a load of big yellow engines
The Peaks of Otter from rt. 122
there's still lots of ice storm damage visible around Paducah.

Well,I was gonna leave Sunday, but ended up leaving Saturday anyway. Afterwards I was glad I did of course-I drove to Maysville,Ky. Saturday and when I left there Sunday morning I still had 600 miles to go to Endeavor,Wisconsin. It was a good load, paid me $760. After I unloaded Monday I went to Chicago to reload for Baltimore. That paid almost $300,so I had a pretty good week in by the time I unloaded in Baltimore Wednesday morning. Then I went across the Key Bridge to Sparrows Point and loaded a couple of coils for N.B.Handy in Lynchburg, dropped them at the shop Wednesday evening, then took a van load of Kyanite to Chester,W.V. and when I unloaded there Thursday morning I went down rt. 2 a little ways and reloaded at Follansbee for Richmond,Va. I was going to drop down I-79 to 68 and over to Hancock, but since the snow was up to the bumper and still coming down at a rate of 14" an hour ( note-I may not be totally accurate in my weather reports, but that's what it seemed like to me at the time,so i'm as accurate as memory allows me to be ) I just stayed on 70 to New Stanton and ran the turnpike to Breezewood, then dropped back down 70 and 17 to 95 to Richmond.Went from Richmond back to the shop in Concord Friday, dropped the van, then hooked back up to my flat and went back to Petersburg and loaded a load of piling going to Nazareth,Pa. for Monday delivery...whew!

Last day of vacation is over,so back to the old grind. I was ready to go after a couple of days off, now it'll take a while to get motivated to get back at it.
Hope they fixed the list of problems with the truck, instead of just putting somebody in it and sending them on their way.
By the way, water, hot sauce, and soap does NOT deter rabbits- -as a matter of fact, they must think it's pretty tasty-3 of them were in the garden last night, one was standing on his hind legs holding onto a cabbage plant with his front feet while he ate. Think i'll move the owl back to the garden and let the squirrels have the peaches-if that doesn't work i'm gonna put a white flag in the garden.
Once again-I must be off now.
