  1. Hello All

I am looking to buy a R model. Always have liked Macks but never had the money to buy one, but now I do. Can spend about 5k. In regard to the 5+4 transmission. Is it possible to shift the 5+4 as only a 5 speed. Are all the 5+4 made by Mack. I really want a truck that is ALL Mack. Thanks

not really-maybe if you were bobtailing all the time. a quadruplex isn't that hard to drive after you fool with it a while-under,direct,and over in the compound in each gear in the main until you get to 5th.gear,then you don't use the compound. The quad. is a Mack trans. but not all 5 and 4s are.

  2. Looking back at the pic I see it now. I knew it would be a matter of time before you did a photoshop.

Nice looking truck though, and clean.Set back front axle.I like it.You'll probly get a new mattress anyway.

  3. i know you wont have any problems with the crusty trusty dodge, but if the trailer gives you any fits i am at westgate on 80-90 if your taking that way to lansing. :thumb:

I took a picture of the Bulldog in front of headquarters in Greensboro, but it's hard to get a picture going west and it was always dark when I came back east. You can barely see it over the black SUV.

  4. Would you take a slightly used PETERBUILT for it? It has had an oil leak recently but is now fixed ( I Think ) It is in Gladys, VA sitting around not being used enough. I think it would be a good trade. Email otherdog more info. Also will send a scarecrow from the garden to keep ya company on long trips.

    mike

I left the Peterbilt at the south Lynchburg truckstop Saturday morning. If it's not there now at least I know what happened to it. As for the scarecrow, I had too many leaves in the garden to till them in so I decided to burn them off and burned the scarecrow up in the process. The owl was unhurt however.

  5. Tom I like the bike with the camper on it the BEST....I might have seen it somewhere....kinda looks familar....I bet the camper is difficult to get into his basement.

Hey....not trying to break up a thread but, where is Bollweeval aka James? have not heard from him in a long time. May have to put out an APB on him.

    mike

The camper was being pulled by a 3 wheel bike too, like the school bus.I got it off another site and did a slapped up cut-copy-paste on it...I forgot where I got the motorcycle picture I used from. It came from around here somewhere pretty close though.

I haven't heard from James for a while either.

  6. I'm just killin' time, waiting for my next mission...

Freightrain at home early one morning gets a cup of coffee and looks out the window...

" oh my gosh! looks like there was a big suplosion over at Joe's junk yard and it blew a rusty, crusty, yet trusty looking Dodge pickup, a trailer with a 3 ton rolling gantry crane,a bulk quick lube dispensing outfit, a 6-71 Detroit engine, a bike, and an R-model or 2 on it right into our driveway- we better call 9-1-1. Wow,all that crap landed on the trailer almost like somebody put it there on purpose!"

  7. Mr. Watt-

"Barry,if you see a rusty, crusty, yet trusty Dodge pickup pull in here pulling a trailer with a 3 ton rolling gantry crane,a bulk quick lube dispensing outfit, a 6-71 Detroit engine, a bike, and an R-model or 2 on the trailer, lock the doors and close the shades."

    Barry-

    "gotcha"

  8. Maybe I'll give putting fuel in it a go; that sounds casual.

I'm leaving Peoria at 5:30am on Thursday to pick up the bike. I'll be traveling on I-74, and I-70 and stopping for a break at INDY. My next break will be someplace around Columbus, OH, then onto Canton, OH, and Akron to load in the evening. Hoping to overnight in Freightrains driveway, and head over to yak with Barry and Tracey at Watt's Mack on Friday morning. Departing there late Friday morning, I'm heading to NE Indiana to pick up a three ton rolling gantry for the shop, then up to Lansing, MI to pick up a bulk quick lube dispensing outfit I purchased. I will overnight at Lansing, or someplace close. If that is not enough, I'm then headed to B61 Fred's place to visit the new addition and pick up a 6-71 Detroit engine stashed there, (momma don't know bout this so don't tell on me). I'll overnight there Saturday, and drop the engine at my uncles place on Sunday morning in Effingham, IL. Then I'll head home and let momma kick the shit outta me for something I did, but don't know about yet.

If anybody is along the route speak up and we'll get together during the trip.

    Rob

geez, where the hell is the bike, Nova Scotia?

I never know where i'm gonna be, but I have been known to travel the area mentioned-except Nova Scotia.

  9. Well after nearly 1/2 hour of trying to get the V8 truck to restart after filling the filters, and transferring the tank contents to the other side, I got pissed off cause wasn't getting anywhere quick. I took a tank cap off, drilled out one of the lead plugs in the top and tapped the hole for a 1/4" air fitting. I then threaded in an air fitting and put 80 pounds to the tank, (which does not leak). Upon jumping in the cab and twisting the key the engine roared to life in about fifteen seconds. This truck has consistently taken air pressure applied to the fuel tank to get it to start after being run out of fuel. Think I'm going to pull the pump and have it looked at/rebuilt. The engine runs very well when it has fuel.

    Rob

You could just put a glad hand on the fuel cap so you can pressurize it easily...or you could even put fuel in it periodically, that might work too.

  10. Saying she's hot is a bit of a stretch too...but definately broke up the monotiny of bearded Canadians, eh?

Anyway, I can't imagine the stones of those guys who did it back then. Nowadays we get bitchy if the a/c isn't working or the ultra-shift is malfunctioning.

yeah, they started in Alaska and went as far as due north of Michigan. They had a plane marking the general route by dropping colored stakes that were weighted on one end so they'd stick in the snow, guides on the ground marking the best route for the road, then cat dozers clearing a trail, more cat dozers widening the trail, then the snow train and trucks, at about 70 below zero. Like he said, sounds easy enough on paper, right?

What they were doing was installing an early warning radar system on the Arctic Ocean.

  11. Rob bought a motorcycle, so I decided maybe I should buy myself something. I'd seen a book called "18 Wheels North to Alaska" mentioned in one of the free truck magazines you see at truckstops so I ordered it from Amazon last week and read it today.

Really good book. The author is 82 years old- maybe 83 by now- and still does some trucking.

He tells the story of the the snow train convoy in 1954. It was the first run for the special built LeTourneau snow train. It pulled 5 trailers, each one 16 feet wide and 40 feet long. They also had a number of big Mack trucks with 600 hp Cummins engines pulling 60' trailers that were 12' wide. Unfortunately, the LeTourneau locomotive caught fire during the journey and was burned beyond repair. 4 of the the big Macks were later sold to a coal mine. The author, Cliff Bishop, went later to retrieve the LeToureau and trailers. He said he saw it years later just south of Fox, Alaska and as far as he knew it's still there.

So, with this info I get on Google Earth and sure enough found it! Here's the street view picture from Google Earth, plus another one I found online...pretty neat, eh?

  12. Yeah we got some compassionate SOB's on here, (IB 1OFEM). I don't need no stinkin compassion, I get sympathy at home from all you guys pickin on me.

Didn't get to screw with the truck anymore today cause I needed a delousing and medicinal bath. Momma's mother was coming by tonight for dinner, and I have to bathe in iodine salts weekly to keep this incessant fungus growth within the skin folds of my stomach at bay. Momma's mother don't much care for the way I smell anyways, so I got to be careful around her. Momma listens to her closely and I usually have a price to pay for being Rob.

We went out to dinner tonight at the local supper club. I had a 28 ounce sirloin that is marketed as "Steak for Two". Momma, mother in law, and Nikki had spaghetti which is also very good but when I go out it's always steak. The owner is a farmer and raises all the beef that is served in his restaurant. It does cost a bit more than the chain steak houses, but with the quality of meat, is worth the difference.

Right now I'm too full to work on the truck. Actually kinda feeling like a beached whale. Got more than my fair share of gas too. Nikki had me eat her spicey meatballs, and I cleaned up Momma's plate when she was through. Mother in law is physically larger than Momma and has my appetite. There are usually no table scraps left over from her.

    Rob

SOB's eh? And after we decided not to bring up the running out of fuel thing any more! Besides, it's not like you ran a truck out of fuel every day, right?..it's just a once in a while thing-we understand

And your mother in law-no wonder! You should have at least offered her the meatballs first. All you had to do was lick them and roll them around in your hands first and she probably wouldn't have wanted them anyway, but she would think you were wonderful for offering them to her.

    We're all here to help!

  13. Hows the Compassion holding out for ya? Think ya might could use some more? DID SOMEONE SAY SOMETHING ABOUT FUEL......OR RUNNING OUT OR SOMETHING?

    mike

 running out of fuel? Think I heard something along those lines, running out of fuel...Rob...out of fuel...i'm not gonna talk about him running out of fuel any more though, he needs compassion right now, not a discussion about him running out of fuel. At the shop. In the driveway. Out of fuel.

    No fuel.

  14. Come on down to the boat ramp on a holiday weekend. THATS where you find quality backing.

Freight-you have to do that so momma don't know you came home that early

ohhhh...or that late! Might've stopped by Hooters to celebrate a good day at the track and had too many hot wings (or something) and lost track of time,eh?

  15. Been married over twenty years now.

Used to know bout them things but you know what they say

"Best way to stop a girl from f----ing is to marry her

Kinda like "if you want to speed a 4 wheeler up, just try to pass that s.o.b.". I knew y'all would get this picture-this is a family friendly site, but that's what Pilot Mtn. in N.C. reminds me of, and besides "that's just funny right there, I don't care who ya' are"-(Larry the Cable Guy).

  16. I did it for a semester...worked out great, because I could drive a morning route, go to class, drive an afternoon route, then go to my regular part time job. Extra $125/week. On the nights I wasn't working my other job, I would pick up routes in the city bus. :thumb:

I have every endorsement on my license...and the only restriction is a J12. Only vehicle I can't legally drive on the road is a combination bus, 'cuz the passenger endorsement is only good up through a class B. I need to find a passenger vehicle and a 10K+ GWR trailer to pull behind it and go get that restriction removed... :pat:

This is the bus I used to drive. Bought it from Freightrain when he got out of the school bus driving binness. Rowdy Rebel

  17. I still wonder HOW I can back my 40ft race trailer into a dark hole at the house at 4am without even trying. THEN, come Saturday afternoon in the glaring sun can't put it in the spot with 4 tries?

it's the pressure. I can't back in at a truckstop because I feel like everybody's watching and they've all got laptops and they're going to post my ineptitude on some website-with pictures to prove it. :(

  18. Sounds like you had a fine day. Mine wasn't going too well either.

Got out the track, finally. Got the car out, warmed it up and headed for the staging lanes. Got backed into the waterbox and hit the brake pedal. Hmmm, not working too well. Not good. I can pump them up, but they don't work well. I still made two passes on what I found to be only rear brakes(front disc not working much at all). After a pass, the rotors were only luke warm and slowing 4100# from 118 mph should put some kinda heat into them.

Just went through the brakes, bleed them and all. Stopped and ordered new master cylinder for it. Can you imagine AZone not having one for a

'73 LTD non power disc brakes? Hmmm. LOL!

Car ran really well, suspension upgrades worked great!!! Can't wait for pictures that track photog took.

we can't either-we love pictures. So what kind of times did you turn?
