I am looking at a CH613 that has a Meritor Rockwell 10spd transmission.  I am unfamiliar with MR transmissions.  How do they compare to Eaton - shifting, durability, parts, repair, etc.?  Also the owner states the shift lever "wobbles" when driving.  Is there a spring that needs replaced?  Or are internal parts worn?  The truck has 600K+ miles.  I don't know anything about the history.

Thanks!

I found that Eatons shift smoother, but i only drove a few, and owned 1 meritor 10 speed. But I remember doing 'in chassis' synchro replacements and it was just like doing an Eaton.  As far as the sloppy shifter, look to see if its a 2 peice shifter like an eaton. Then you can replace the bushing at the joint like an eaton. I bet ive changed 50 of them..

There are likely 2000 Eaton's for every 1 Meritor. For parts alone, your better off with what everybody else has. Neighbor had one, I don't know what the problem was but he complained a lot about it.

Both are a box of gears, and put together much the same way.

Look at the stick right above where it goes into the transmission for an isolator bushing.

Thanks everyone for the comments and info.

There is a rebuild kit (KIT5237) on fleabay for $20.  I will pass this on to the seller.  And I will likely pass on this CH.  Prefer single axle.

I owned a 9400 International one time with a meritor 10 speed. I hated that transmission.  When it had the first sign of syncro problems, I went back with an Eaton. I like it alot better.

Just my personal experience tho.

Funny how that is.. similar structure,  not as good as eaton.. i had a hard time shifting my Meritor, after driving a ton of  trucks at the shop with Eaton, and Mack transmissions.  I did learn it,  but didnt like it. However, i did like the cruise buttons on the shift knob, kinda made slow speed changes a breeze..

I agreed with all that. I cant understand why the meritor was not nearly as smooth as the eaton. Never did tear it open to dissect it to learn, but I wish i would have. Im bad about having to see the inside of things like that. Been tearing things up ever since childhood lol

I looked at it like this:

Eaton made close ratio main box with repeatable shift pattern, wide ratio range box.

Spicer made wide ratio main box with close ratio splitters, with a non repeat shift pattern

What did Meritor bring to the table that was better or different?
