Willie Dog,

The dash in my 1956 B-42 has a plug in the hole where the starter button should be. Looks to be original. Probably had the same set up as yours at one time until the previous owner modernized the electrical system. It now starts with just a key ignition switch. As for the tach, if you want to rig one up temporarily without changing out the original dash panel, you can mount one on the side of the steering column with a large hose clamp. Not real pretty but functional.

all the B42's had the firewall starter button til about 1964 til Mack went to the key switch starter option and did away with the push button.it was so you could ''fluff'' the gas pedal while pushing the starter button. they all had a hole plus in the hole in the dash. the bigger overhead valve gas engine trucks used the push button on the dash like a B61 and had a huge solenoid mounted on the firewall. very few gas engine B models had a tach. even the bigger overhead valve ones, few had a tach. we have a few B42's in out fleet that do have a tach tho.
