Mack Military – The Revolutionary Mack MB-3 8x8 Aircraft Fire Fighting “Crash” Truck

The amount of engineering that went into that vehicle just to make a testbed for the desired end user is nuts, there is no company left in the US if not the world htat would go to the trouble to build that, instead they would send you a computer model, oh and charge you for it.

When doing business with the U.S. military in the 50s and 60s, that was the way. And in all fairness, the products that emerged under that system were usually impressive. With today's available research technologies, the design process is now different.

People talk about modern engineering? That was way more sophisticated than any of this garbage we have nowadays.

Exactly. Look at the innovation in that drive system. Can today's engineers do that? So many of today's designs are not all-new, but rather refinements based on the foundation of all-new innovations from previous eras.

I find the engineering, design and pre-production work done nowadays by 3D printers quite remarkable.

If I had the money for a 3D printer, it would be great to make little doodads such as B-75, B-81, Thermodyne emblems. When prices come down, it might be feasible for small runs.

It doesn't cost anything to pay attention.

I have a friend that is toying with the idea of getting a 3d printer, the type used to print with metal are too expensive but the resin/plastic based printers aren't that bad and you can then use your plastic prototype to make the mold to pour metal pieces.

That's it exactly.
