Mack Cabover Sleepers

Recommended Posts

Were the sleepers on the F, cruiseliner/ultraliner MH all one size? Every F and MH I see has either a day cab or a short sleeper. I have seen an F model that has a sort of hirise top on it, was that factory or stock? Were any longer sleeper options availible?

IIRC the F model was introduced with 72" and 80" sleepers. Later a "bustle back" was added that lengthened the sleeper to 86" or so. The Cruiseliner was available with 76" and 86" or so sleepers. The MH Ultraliner had only a 90" or so sleeper option.

The short sleepers were built to pull doubles on the west coast primarily so you don't see them much in the rest of tthe country.

Your post brings back fond memories. Back in '78 I speced out 3 Cruiseliner WS786LTs and WS786LSTs. The financing fell through, so we ended up with 3 year old F795Ts and a F786ST. I drove the F795T and with the 325 horse V8 it was a gas doing local work with light loads. I later drove MH690Ts at UPS- great truck, and the finest cabover I've ever driven... and I've driven everything but the new Freightshaker Argosy.

The Cruiseliners were 90" for the big sleeper. Both the short bunk F's and Cruiseliners are really hard to find today.

That hi-rise top was an aftermarket kit, can't remember who made them, but they offered them for several brands of trucks.I've seen them on F-models,as well as White Road Commander's and IH 4070's.

I see that those hirise sleepers were sold in Europe.

:SMOKIE-LFT: Hello Mack fans,

Yes the F models with hi-rise sleepers were sold in Europe.

There was a trucking company thet had an F model truck, they hauled fruit and vegetables.

They had 2 drivers. and needed a double bunk. So a company made a high roof and put in the double bunk.not the ones you see in the pictures.

The Mack dealer here in Holland brought the idea up to Mack in Allentown. They made their own design and the "high rise"sleeper cab for the F model was there. It was quite a succes, once there was a company that had 23 of them!! Some where in the "80's there was another european versin of the F model. it had a set back front axle. According to drivers it improved driving comfort and it did make less wide turns.

Hope this info helps you.

If anyone ever runs across one of those "high-rise" units that is usable I would really like to hear about it. I would like to put one on my '70 F Model.

T.

I cant recall ever seeing one here in and around the Chicago aera. I know where there are a few sleeper cab F models but no hi rise sleepers. I always liked the look of the ones from across the pond.
