I've been seriously considering purchasing a local farmer's 1992 F250 with a 7.3 turbocharged diesel and five speed trans. The truck itself is rotted to the gills so not really much good but does run well. I know the family history so pretty certain it has been maintained. I do remember it new as I used to sublet repair all the then Ford dealership autobody repair work. I understand this was the first year Ford offered the 7.3 diesel as factory turbocharged but don't remember it being charge air cooled. Is this correct? Is the engine sound being the first year produced? I can't bring myself to purchase another new truck as I just don't require it, (business or personal). Spent a couple of hours yesterday "digging out" the B model Mack mentioned earlier as I am going to move forward with putting this truck together regardless. This Dodge thing is just the springboard I've needed to work on the project. Of the three B models in the shop, none are roadworthy and this is such a terrible thing to live through....... Rob

"Momma", (being the sentimental thing she is) really wants me to keep the old Dodge for parts. This in truth was the only new vehicle I'll ever have, (by choice) so I may wind up doing similar to your suggestion of ripping the drive out and installing into something else. It really did pull well for what it was but for my application a 4.56 rear would have been more fitting. I don't think to many would fault me for installing the drivetrain into an older medium duty chassis, whatever it may be. Rob

Yup, that is a venerable old 6-71 Detroit Diesel. Pretty good engine really, just loud. Those always were a brute for a work truck; uncomfortable, loud, usually leaked water, (given that engine, leaking oil is a given) but they always got the job done asked of it. I did that about 20 years ago so she is much wiser, (and meaner) with retaliation now. If I even think of raising my knees, I get a foot to the ribs on very short order. We have had plastic liners on the mattress for several years now cause since my 20's I tend to leak a little fluid from one of my orifices while sleeping. Even I don't know which one is going to leak but it really depends on what I've eaten, or drank in the past couple of hours before drifting off to sleep. Due to being tired of listening to "Momma" bitch about all my underwear being stained, I quit wearing them. Now "Momma" never has worn any and she, (in retaliation) went to fart in bed, rolled over on her side, proceeded to let loose and I swear she impacted me with an airborne chilli bean! Then she laughed and told me to clean up the mess. The nerve of that woman sometimes. But, I still love her. Rob

No doubt that DM is heavy, I looked at it close. Should last you a good long time doing what you require of it. The forklift thing is relatively new in need. I'm out of room and all my trucks need a space to park inside but there is just too much stuff on the floor. I have plenty of room as I have 18' sidewalls so I'm going to acquire pallet racking, (much like yours) and move on up with tires, engines, etc. No real hurry but if you run across somthing worth the money be sure to let me know. Problem is in order for Mark to have my RL means I'm either in the ground, or cut up into small bite sized pieces evenly dispersed among the currents. Roy has every right to be proud of that LT. Sure is nice. I'd like to have that for certain. Pete: Man I'd have to close my eyes tight with my back to the truck to take that; however, if the pulling unit is a Peterbilt I'd be certain to leave the cell phone ringer on exceptionally loud, and prolly take vacation from work to be available for rapid response in anticipaiton of the inevitable breakdowns enroute. Prolly take upwards of a month or so to transport the load 1/2 way across the country but who would be counting? If the Mack were a tractor, the pulling units could be swapped out with a chain, a local recycling facility located, and the poor decrepit thing, (Peterbilt) placed in a place of dignity and respect. The Mack could then deliver the load unimpeded to progress. But alas, it's not a tractor; so I'd have to wait. At least those would be "Other Dog's" thoughts. Rob

Yes, that went without problems. You don't need an RL700 series truck for a picker as they all need to be in my driveway and I don't have anything to do with trees!! LOL. I know David is still looking for a few more 24" rims too. A couple of those were 25" and not usable for him. I need to call you sometime to be on the lookout for me a 5000# rought terrain lift truck and a few other things I'm needing. Wanting something with a small footprint to operate inside though on the lift truck. Is the DM doing alright? Rob

Hi Dave, that is a "Farr" brand air cleaner assembly. They were very good and optional but did not offer much in the way of "silencing" the air intake at all. If you had one on a Detroit powered truck, one could hear you coming from two miles instead of the normal one mile warning. Rob

What is kinda funny or strange is how the same transmission behind different engines acts. For instance, my R612, and the RL755L had the same trans, (RTO-12513) yet the Mack engine required the shifting to be about twice as fast as the Cat powered truck. It took me a few times out to learn to shift what is seemingly really slowwwwww in the RL while the engine wound down to avoid gear clash. Rob

Agree with that and a big horse don't have to work hard all it's life neither. A guy with a big horse and a light foot will get better mileage than a guy with a smaller steed and heavy foot.A lot depends on how fast one needs to get where they are going. Rob

That combination definately sounds like a "flatland country" type of driveline. Certainly not for where you are at, and run. He ought to seek getting the trans changed to as you suggest, a thirteen speed. I'd have a hard time with the rear axle gearing also. It must be about CAFE, (corporate average fuel economy) that would allow a truck to be scec'd that way. Rob

It is possible someone has changed out a housing through the years. I have two trucks with SWDL56 rears and they are both 34,000# suspensions with aluminum brake chamber mounts. Most rears I've seen with the cap and grease zerks are 44,000# or greater. Hope I've not mislead you. Rob
