  1. Well, our new Visions have arrived, and some of the old MRs have gone off to the auction... But I've seen only 2 of these hundreds of tractors offered for sale. Both are 1997 MR688STs with between 200,000-300,000 miles with automatics. One has been listed in Truck Paper for weeks, asking $15,000. The other just turned up on eBay, and with an hour left looks like it'll be lucky to draw a $5000 bid.

This has me wondering- perhaps the MR tractors are so undersirable that no one has bid on them at the dealer only auctions they were sent too? Perhaps the dealers on this board can shed some light here- I'm in the market for one of these tractors, and if they're going for $5000 or less I may buy more than one!

Its a thing that cabovers are dead here in the US. There really isnt a need or desire for them as a tractor. Plus why limit yourself to a cramped MR when you can have a second-hand CH for cheap? Im not saying that MR's make bad tractors but most people wouldent find them comfortable. I have yet to see anyone else besides the postal service use MR's as tractors and exclusive use of air starters (I herd air starters devalue a truck but I love em ever since watching the Road Warrior :D ) .

  2. What you're looking at is a parts truck- blown engine, some parts stripped already, etc.. It's never worth it to ship a parts truck clear across the country- for what you'd have in it by the time you get it home you could have a running Superliner.

I know. But man I love the 700. And to have one that looks good but is not running and across the country is a turn off.

  3. Darn good lookin truck. :thumb: I love those oil field tube bumpers with the brush guard for the grille.

That is a nice looking truck. I think it looks much nicer with fender extensions that do not have the bolt recesses showing.

The picture of the other new Mack dumper that Barry had posted months back looked cheaply added onto with the fender extensions. This one looks much cleaner.

    Rob

I think it was the newer granite axle back that had the ugly fender extensions. On Macks website the new granite will also have the same fender extension :(

  4. Hey guys,

Spotted this good looking rs700, problem is that it is located in Oregon. Thats about 3000 miles from me here in NY City. Low price but they quoted shipping at 3500 which sounds high but seeing as how much money diesel is today I can understand. What do you guys think? Old R cab, quad box, and a cummins with the top end in pieces. Tires are supposed to be 22.5" but those rims look like 20" tube. Too bad it cant run :(

  5. Does anyone remember pictures of a big M Model Mack from New York that was in mint condition...it was red and white. I think the owner was Gerosa Const or something like that? I am looking for some pics of their trucks. I would appreciate any contact info or photos if you have them...

Barry you might want to check these galleries I found on Hanks site.

This is what I think you want: http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/truc...lamore_mack.jpg

These galleries feature some gerosa Macks:

  6. Hello everyone my name is tyson pace i live and work in bridgeton nj. I am the proud owner of a 1987 r688st,my plans are to restore back to show room condition.I am not a truck driver by trade but have been around and work on them since i was baby. I am the fleet manager for south state inc. a large paving contractor in south jersey. My truck does not need a lot of body work but the interior is completly shot ,the engine is already out and is at morristown truck repair for rebuild. Well i am happy to meet everyone, this site is the best i have every been to great job ,looking forword to discussions about :mack1: trucks.

    Welcome aboard!

Hi Tyson, Glad you found us. There's a lot of info to be learned from the members here and I'll bet you have plenty to give to us. I'm just a little north of you but still in south Jersey. Have you ever heard of the term "Bennys" before? It's what we call the city folks from north Jersey or NY which stands for Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark & New York (no offense Thad). They call us Pineys and that's OK 'cause I'm proud to be a Piney from my head down to my hiknee. Bob

    none taken.

  7. It's a rainy day in VA, and the dog doesn't leave the dog house when it looks like rain, lol. Anyway, I was calling around to see how much it would cost to insure my truck, an 87 superliner, in my name. I tried all of the short cuts, garaged in a remote location, marriage, and a 50 mile radius. Keep in mind that I am 21, have had my class A cdl for 3 years, have excellent credit, and have no prior accidents or tickets. I received 5 quotes. All range between $9,000 per year and $11,500 for just liability! I think i'll wait till i turn 25 and try it again, lol. I think that's a little too much considering i only put 30,000 miles on the truck a year. Maybe I'm just cheap. What do ya'll think?

Your 21 and have had a class A for 3 years? Here in NY you have to be 21 to get a class A. You can get your B when your 18 though.

When my mothers insurance company herd my brother was 18 and living with us that made the insurance price jump. Here is the catch; he didn't even have a learners permit! I guess they assume he will hijack my Tahoe or moms trail blazer and run a few people over, darn teenagers. My mother said he moved to Florida and I moved to another house we own. Screw the insurance companies. In their eyes young drivers are all retarded, unfortunately they are partially right. Too bad the rest of us responsible drivers have to suffer. I have had my license since I am 21, driving with my permit since I was 18. Never and I mean never had an accident and only pulled over twice and not for moving violations. The morons who can't keep a car for more then 4 months without wrecking it because they think the roads are race tracks ruin it for us.

Take my advice, stay under your pops insurance. I am still under my mothers policy as a driver. Save your money.

  8. If it's hooked to the air tank and has a line coming from the service brakes, its just what the last guy said, an automatic moisture ejector... When you hit the brakes, it functions.... Cliff

If that’s the case then you could temporarily bypass it. Is it possible to put an air dryer on the truck and do away with that thing?

Under 25 insuring a big rig like that I can see why the quotes were so high. When you are under 25 they think your a drooling moron behind the wheel. After your 25th birthday you suddenly become a responsible driver.

How cool would it be if OCC did a Mack bike? Their Caterpillar bike was incredible and I could definatly see them doing an awesome job on a Mack bike. Bulldog between the handle bars!

  11. Hey Tim,

DHS? Do they have a web site or anything?

More questions... I know the B-81 series came with a Mack motor and the B-83 series was Cummins powered, what makes the B-87 different? And waht is the difference between th B-87SX and the B873SX?

    Thanks!

    Doc,

Here is the link to the B model info on oldmacksrus.com

The B-87sx had a cummins NHRS (supercharged) engine, the 873sx had a NRT(turbo charged).

  12. Hi,

ok, between the rain the other day and the snow (yes...snow) today I was able to get out there and see what the story is with this part.

It has 2 lines that come from it. 1 line is a copper line that goes to the center jammie that has lines that go to both brake chambers. Another line comes out and goes along side the frame rail back into the air tank.

Thad, I think it might be what you were explaining but there are only 2 lines coming out of it. Is it possible there was supposed to be another line and its just not there?

    Thanks for your help!

Yea the snow was funny since the other day it was almost 70. Funny thing is when I drove to Long Island City (north-west Queens) I did not see a single bit of snow. I was the only vehicle that had snow on it.

Hmmm does it constantly leak? Or does it only leak when the brake pedal is pushed? I can’t seem to find an air brake diagram for older trucks which makes identifying the thing difficult. Is it for the service brakes or spring brakes (I assume service)? Relay valves have a minimum of 3 lines for operation. Does a hose attach to that hose barb?

Jeff, do you have only 2 air lines coming and going from that unit? Anyone else?

  13. Could it be the relay valve? The relay valve has at least 3 lines running to/from it:

    -Supply from air reservoir

    -Control from brake pedal

-Delivery to brake chambers (there could be more then one delivery port, one for each brake chamber)

Its purpose is to quickly actuate the brakes by using the brake pedal air supply as a simple control signal instead of supplying the full brake pressure through the pedal which would delay the brakes coming on. If one of the lines running out of it goes to the brake chambers then definatly a relay valve. A relay valve has a constant air supply from the reservoir so a leak in it will cause a constant loss of pressure.

  14. Ok we all love the E-9 but it seems that getting parts for them costs an arm and a leg. Lets say you are running a v8 and the engine blows, what would be an acceptable E9 replacement? A cat in the dog house doesn't seem very Mack to me. Cummins? What about an E7? And how may of you would spring for an MP10 to replace a bad E9 when it is released (assuming you could do a repower with one)? Or is the whole E9 parts chrisis overblown?

  15. I have a question I'm also to embarrased to ask, but here goes: In regards to lowbed/lowboy trailers, what is the difference between ground bearing and non-groung bearing?

I've run detachable gooseneck lowbed trailers in the past, but as I'm searching ads for a new trailer, I keep seeing these terms, but all the pictures look the same.....HELP!

From what I read ground bearing means that a ram must engauge the ground to lift the goose neck to couple to the tractor, like landing gear. Non ground bearing means that the goose neck has a cylinder that tilts the neck to couple then lifts the trailer once coupled. so the weight of lifting the trailer goes onto the fifth wheel and not the ground. I am not 100% sure but thats what I remember.

  16. Do you want to sell it???? that is what I have been looking for......Jeff

    Hey Jeff,

I found this on truck paper, looks to be the same thing as what nhtrucka has. It is a hyster 24' tilt bed with a fifth wheel hookup. http://www.truckpaper.com/listings/forsale...E0F8877E6A7569A

    nhtrucka,

Did you find that trailer on the truck paper? I saw the same kind of trailer on it few weeks ago and then it wasnt there last week. Nice find.

  17. Well This is an odd question but I am wondering if anyone knows of a good website to get good quality help on fixing my mothers Trailblazer. Would be nice if it were as helpful as this site is. Having problems with the fan clutch and want some advice before throwing down 250 bucks for a new one. If only todays cars/light trucks were built like Macks.
