  1. Since Mack doesn't make a pick-up, which Diesel do you like best?  Ford Powerstroke, Dodge Cummins or Chevrolet Duramax?

Also would be interested in your opinion on the Duramax.

Duramax is an Isuzu engine. Or at least Isuzu designed. Had an Isuzu truck once and its engine blew after only 30k, lol. what a piece of junk. Not saying the Duramax is junk just that I am not pleased with Isuzu hardware in a Chevy truck.

As for which of the three, I like the Cummins but never liked the Dodge look (ugly as sin). Always liked the look of a Chevy and partial to the Ford. Dare I say I like the Allison option in the Chevy? You never know who might need to drive it. The ideal setup would be the Cummins in a Chevy with a 6 speed or the Allison.

  2. Looking at a B 73 with a duplex and a Mack 3 speed Aux box that hangs off a couple of factory cross members behind the cab!!

If two sticks don't mess you up, try this one with three!!!

          Packer

I once saw this same setup in a B on ebay a long while back. lol 27 foward and 6 reverse speeds to choose from.

  3. Randy, It's http://www.telusplanet.net/public/ryq/

If you like 6V-53's, there's one over there on a Dyno Tester.  Talk about screaming.  But whoever visits will have to make sure they listen to the 12V-71's.  There's 2 on there and they are well worth listening to.

Wow what a great collection. Love the 12V71 in the puller, sounds down right mean. LoL injectors out of a locomotive engine, 85psi boost and running over 6500 RPM's. Great site. Does anyone have any sound bites of the E9?

  4. I would definatly buy one, the old tahoe is due to be replaced. A while back I even drew up what one would look like too (kinda like a vision). International now has the CXT and soon the RXT and the military humvee replacement the MXT which should also be marketed to civilians. Mack would definatly have a leg to stand on in the light truck market due to the rep they have in the heavy truck market. Would love to pop the hood to reveal a nice chromed up engine compartment with a real turbo charged mack engine coupled to a mack 6 speed (engine brake too!). Add to that a real nice comfortable interior sitting on a rock solid chassis then you would have a winner. Looking out the wind shield of my pickup and seeing the bulldog would make me proud to drive it!

Damn now I really want one lol.

  5. The LE and MR have to be indestructable.  You would not believe how they get abused by some city sanatation dpts.  If the truck breaks down the guys go home, sometimes it's a goal.  The plastic park brake switch is made of metal becase it's often broken off.  Some guys pee in the trucks which leaks into the "breadbox" where some of the ECU's are located, it's a killer on an electrical system.

Thats probably why the NYC sanitation mainly uses ML's and allot of private carters use mostly MR's. The private carters use Macks and here and there you might see a Pete or a Westernstar. The Sanitation Dept. also has crane carriers still kicking around too.

  6. I can see why there arn't more cl tractors on the highway (ugly) but the cl"s as a dump are awesome looking especialy with a little crome and paint. We have a company out east here that has red cl's with black trim and silver aluminun dump boxes (puts those k woppers and petes to shame). The company is rawson. They seem to have one of everything mack makes. They even have one t-800 but its no match for the cl's in appearance. So whats up all you dumpers why not more cl's?

I have seen some CL dumpers around here in NYC but I dont think its ugly at all. The nicest and meanest looking CL I have seen yet was a ConEdison tri-axle tractor with a lowboy for hauling transformers and other power equipment. Dont exactly remember but I think it has 12x24's on it with a spoke hub's all around and a lift axle.

  7. I saw an episode of Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel last night where they attempted to prove or disprove the myth that a stick of dynamite would clean out a mixer drum after the cement hardened.  A stick had no impact so they put 850 pounds of dymamite in the drum of a RB mixer.  All that was left of the truck was the front and rear axles and engine.

On another episoed they ramed a MR tractor and a Ford cabover into a small car  to try to prove the trucks would fuse together from the heat.  The Ford and car were demolished but the MR cab was mostly intact.

It is a sad ending for two Macks that worked hard.

I agree. They should have used freight shakers instead.

  8. mine is 125" bumper to back of cab. You were also asking about the Trimatic coupling a while ago, they are made by WABCO. if that is of any help, much more superior to your old 1940s glad hands???.

    nigel :chili:

    Nigel,

I looked up the coupler on WABCO's websit and they called it duo-matic. There also seems to be a second type that has a third port for an auxiliary air line called a triomatic. I like how you operate the coupling with a lever for quick connecting of all lines at the same time. I wonder if they are available here in the US.

  9. thanks for the info. 8.5 " rims shouldn't be too bad to find or buy...i imagine the spacer will have to be different with the 8.5 rims correct?.. oh and can you mount any 12x24 tires on  aluminum rims?..ie did they ever make a 24 aluminum rim  either tube or runable with out tube?.

    Thanks

    Deo

I have never seen a demountable rim made of aluminum. You can check out this link from accuride on there demountable rims (pdf file from Accuride wheels ). It might be possible to have the rims polished or maybe even chrome plated to get that look.

  10. Interesting.  Here in VA about half the trucks have lift axels.  I guess each way has it's pros and cons.  But anyway, I saw a dump truck this summer and I had to take a double take.  It had 5 axels.  It was a tandem with 3 lift axels.  The axels were almost to the cab.  The front 2, if not all 3 were steering axels, of course.

Yea all for the bridge formula. The shorter the vheicle the more concentrated the load on the road surface. The idea is to spread out the load more evenly. Hendrickson has a real good article on there site for the Bridge Formula. I could rant all day on the short comings of the law but thats a whole nother story <_< .

  11. honda cars and others build in usa does that make them american?

This is a good point. I think what bothers most of us is that Volvo appears to favor using their designs over Mack designs. That is a bit insulting as why are their designs better then Macks? It is sort of giving us an inferiority complex. We can start worrying when they do to Mack what they did to Autocar.

  12. Hi Guys, I just purchased a CB for use in my B, however when on the road, cannot hear a thing, even with the sqelch lifted. To converse with passengers, literally have to shout.

In fact on long trips I insert the foam plugs in my ears and wear an ANR (active noise reduction) aviation headset. No, that is not the reason I cannot hear the CB

Some have told me the reason it is noisy inside is because I have the muffler up alongside the drivers (right hand side) rear quarter of the cab.

    Comments appreciated.

    Rod.

You could try lining the floor and fire wall on the inside with dynamat. They use that stuff in cars with those big thumping radio systems to dampen out road noise. And maybe the pipes being cab mounted will increase noise so making frame supports for the pipes would be a good idea?

  13. You know I thought the twin stick with the hi-lo-rev was the predecessor to the 12 speed. So you can't use any other gear other then 1st in lo? And thatnks to everyone for explaining the quad box for me. I had a feeling that you used the comound to split the main gears.

Just in case one day i need to drive one i want to be shure i have it down:

a quad with lolo-lo-direct-hi compund is shifted like a 15 speed splitting each gear with lo-direct-hi correct? and with the compund in lolo you can progressivly shift 1-5 for a deep reduction range correct?

a 2 stick 6 speed is realy a 5 speed with the option of a low first gear for extream off road or heavy hauling.

the main box has 5 foward gears

the aux has revers, Low and direct

under normal use . you only shift the main stick (closest to your leg).1-2-3-4-5  the aux box stays in "Direct"

If you are very heavy or in a hole and need to climb out you would put the aux or compound box into "low" and use the main in 1st. After the truck is out of the hole mud etc...and on flat level ground you would shift the aux box from "low" to "direct" accelarate then shift 2-3-4-5 with the main. So basicly its like splitting 1st gear in half with the aux box. this gives you 6 foward speeds. However the shift from "low" to "direct" has to be done carefully as if the truck is still climbing out of a hole you likely will miss shift as the slow road speed will fall very quick.

I always let the truck get on flat ground bring the RPMs to 1600 or so and then make the shift.
