  1. Rick is right. The Mack dealer where i live was working on a MH in with a 12 speed. The shop foreman told me they had a hell of a time getting parts for it.

Wasnt there an eaton/fuller lightning 10 that automatically split the gears and you just shifted it as a 5 speeed? I think it was supposed to be a fleet transmission for local work. It must have failed as I dont see it on the roadranger website (never herd of problems just people knocking it).

  2. Anyone know of any LTs for sale with a mack or cummins engine i would really like to find one in ok condition with a good frame on it? i have been lookin for one for a while now and they seem hard to find but im on the east coast.

    Thanks Chad

There is a nice tandem LT with a Cummins for sale on ebay. Its about 60 miles west of Chicago. Its startign bid is 12,000 which isnt too bad concidering you get a second cab and front end to go with it. I am almost tempted to bid myself.

  3. Hi Guys, I stumbled across a web site full of dedicated Brockway owners with a little Mack history which caught my eye. The site is www.brockwaytrucks.org/museum/history.html Brocks were a great tough truck too and there's some great photos and history there plus some Mack info back in the "B" days when the bulldogs first bought out the huskies.

Great page, thanks for the link!

Reminds me of this girl my friend used to date. Her last name was Brockway and was supposedly a decendent of George Brockway (she knew of the truck company). Real hot lookin girl but was a total head case lol.

  4. Pretty good handbook. I knew I had it just took some time to find it. Lot of good diagrams in it if I remember right.

Here is a link. the bendix site for the download. http://www.bendix.com/downloads/air_brake_...5057_online.pdf

I told Trent about it in a post he started in this section. Good job posting the link, that book taught me almost everyting I know about air brakes.

If anyone is curious about the European air brake setups then try this catalog link from Knorr-Bremses (the parent company of Bendix).

  5. what is your guys beef wtih volvos? they are good trucks and they great motors. Mack and Volvo (the way i see it) are going to be the only two manufactures that will come out on top with the emission regs for 2007.

I cant speak for all of us, but I dont dislike Volvo. Dont get me wrong the vt880 is a real sweet looking truck. I just don't want to see mack reduced to an empty shell like autocar was. It was a joke anyway, laugh

  6. Here's a Titan in the states.

I wonder why they have a titan here in the states for testing. It would be sweet if mack usa is evaluating its potential for sale here! Well I guess I will have to keep on dreaming. I would love to import one and convert it to left hand steer. Seen a couple with 525HP E9's and about 73k miles going for about $80,000. There are some nice real big road train haulers with 600/620hp cummins, tri drive or tandem planetary hub reduction. Those go for about 125 grand and can haul up to 170 tons. Ahhh I want one!

  7. I think Bendix is getting the technology from knorr Bremse who has had the systems availible for a while now. The coolest thing they have is an electronic abs system that hooks to the air bags and adjusts the brake pressure according the the vheicle weight during an emergency braking maneuver. Wabco has similar equipment. Nice to see were getting this here in the states now.

  8. My goodness Thad, that's a lot of info in such a short email!!! LOL

"S" cams roll and are operated, by air, at 0 degrees to the brake linning.

Wedge brakes are 90 degrees to the linning, and "Wedge" the brake shoes out.

Saw an old Mack with what may have been an up-grade kit for Maxi/Spring brakes (they're the same thing). Had the spring cans bolted to the frame between cab and drive axle. There was a cable comming out of the can and running down and back to the slack adjusters. When the switch was operated, the spring would pull the cable which pulled the slack adjuster, which pulled the brakes on!!

    Packer

    Thanks for the info Packer!

  9. Hi Shamrock, I'm not sure if this is any help to you or not but here's my experience. My '61 B61 was a tractor that I turned into a single axle dump. All it had was a drum parking brake on the drive shaft and single acting air chambers on the rear brakes. One day while loading it on a hill, off it went without me behind the wheel. I picked up a pair of spring set air release chambers which fit without any modification. Then I put a parking brake valve in the dash and ran the plumbing to the chambers to release the springs and a supply line to the valve. The service line remained unchanged. This truck has lever type actuating cams and not the wedge style. If this is any help to you let me know, I've got a digital camera and can go into more detail. Bob Martyn

I know about spring brakes but how do they differ from maxi brakes? How does the maxi brake lock the tires? Oh and how does the wedge type brakes work versus the s cam style, anyone have a diagram of this?

  10. OK, here are some crude screen caps I took...

It's ugly, but it's still a Mack! LOL

Here are a few more after they blew the tires out. LOL I am still trying to find the windsheild on that thing.

Also it had a nice michigan style trailer on it.

hey Barry, you wouldent happen to have the 2 cd keg rip of the movie :D

  11. The post about the CDL's reminded me of another question. If a person bought a truck with a GVW of 35,000, and say the truck weighed 17,000, and registered it to the lower GVW of 26,000, which wouldn't require a CDL, I'm wondering if this would be able to work with no problems. If it would work, besides being able to legally drive it without a CDL, one could still haul 9,000 lbs worth of weight. Wondering if anyone out there has ever done this or would have any info on it.

Great question as I asked this once too. David said it best; you can register a truck under its mfg GVW but an officer will go by the gvw of the trucks door tag. Its kinda dumb but thats the way it goes. Also here in NY I believe you need a CDL for air brakes no matter what the GVW and what your doing with it. I also herd the import trucks with the air over hydraulic brakes were designated as air brake vheicles by the DOT. So even a little ud or hino with the air over hyd setup would need a CDL.

Oh and a side note, once while at an international dealer I asked if a truck of 26k gvw could be registerd as 17,999 pounds (under cdl) could be driven by a non CDL holder. His answer was yes even though an office goes by the door plate. Even the sales people dont know for sure. My recent trip to my local Mack dealer revealed that it was changed from under 18k to under 26k. This is recent so now any vheicle under 26k and no air brakes needs no CDL here in NY.

  12. I hope I did not sound to angry in my original post just that I actually went down to the dmv stood in line only to be given the eye exam and fail. Didnt even have a shot at the 100 question test that I bet I could ace. The road test sounds a little extreme but if I had the time with an actual tractor trailer I would be fine.

"Some people just don't have the passion for trucks or the passion to learn about them like others,to some people its more than a job its a way of life."

    Van,

I definatly agree with you. My fathers father was a truck driver his whole life and my fathers brother still to this day drives. My mothers father was a truck nut but never drove, he was always a big pete fan. My first time driving was when I got my regular licence and took the GMC ride truck (under CDL) for a spin. I stalled it once and somehow got it stuck in second. But 3 blocks later was running around with no problem. Good friend and co-worker Mark showed me how to drive a 26' international truck with air brakes and a 6 speed (GMC was only a 4 speed). No problems there; just skipped a gear, but Fixed that real quick.

"I have to rent a tractor & trailer to take the test, what does that cost? Ok I can go to a local Class A truck driving school and practice with a freightliner, only $5,000.00 what a deal."

    Randy,

The local driving schools who will teach you to drive a tractor trailer charge you about $1200 for five one hour lessons. Now 5 hours doesen't seem like enought time to me. There are other packages that give you more time but at a much higher cost. I went to ryders website and they will rent you an entire tractor trailer setup for around 1500 a week. Now All I need is my buddy Mark and I am set. Thing is 1500 bucks isnt easy to come by.

"Judging by some of the yo-yo's we have on the road out here in trucks, someone's giving CDL's out of gum ball machines."

    mackaholic,

Yea there are plenty here too. Once next to our shop a mixer came down the street ripped off a negibours bumper and somehow managed to reverse the drum and dump cement for 5 blocks until the car owner caught up with him. He had a valid CDL but didnt know jack about what he was doing. Another time a driver for the DOT had a leak in his hydraulic tank on his dump truck and ignored it even after I told him he was spilling hydraulic fluid all down Cross Bay Blvd. Some are just plain dumb.

  13. What about the retired Doctor, that has never even driven a pickup truck, but can go buy a 50,000 lb RV with air brakes and head for Florida without being required to have a CDL?

But most people would think twice before getting into a vheicle that big and just drive off. Plus wouldent the sales guy go over the finer points of vheicle operation?

  14. Recently I tried to get my CDL but failed the eye exam. Now I have a cataract in my right eye so I need eye correction but only surgery will help, not glasses. I gave it some thought and really there is no need for the CDL except maybe a written test and an endorsement, not a whole different license with a road test. Reading through the manual made me laugh because 90% of it is common sense. The hazmat section is the only section that I really read and learned from.

The doubles triples section is the biggest joke. The whole endorsement is based on two things: two or more trailers make you more unstable and how to couple a lead trailer to a pup trailer (no road test necessary). Wow I am an expert now, show me to the nearest set of turnpike doubles!

And another thing is this; here in NY if the truck is under 26k gvw and has no air brakes, you don’t need a CDL. Many truck rental companies offer 26 foot non CDL trucks that are exactly the same length/height/weight as a CDL truck. Why is the CDL needed again? In some states on vehicles with air brakes below 26k gvw don’t even need a CDL to be driven. And the hydraulic brakes that come on most trucks always seem inadequate, ever try to quickly stop a loaded truck with hydraulic brakes? I guess the extra weight must make people forget how to drive.

Maybe my rant is out of anger but allot drivers that were driving well before the CDL think it is a joke too. I have driven CDL trucks before with no problems and learned in a few minutes. A friend of mine worked for a landscaping company drove their dump truck with a tag trailer for 2 years before he got his CDL. What do you guys think?

  15. I was wondering what the major difference between the maxidynes and the E6 is. I also want to know which one was called the cool power. I am slowly trying to educate myself in Mack engines so I need all the help I can get.

This is a maxidyne 676 and there is an ENDT 676 and a ENDTB 676. What is the difference and is it air to air and air to water aftercooled or just air to air? Also the 676-300 had the aftercooling and the 675-237 did not, right?

Now this is an E6. I herd there was a 2 and 4 valve version. It has air-to-air and air-to-water aftercooling and uses the same block as the 675-237 and the 676-300. Is this the same E6-350 that I commonly see in superliners and other R's? Also what was the difference between the 2 and 4 valve sersion?

Will the 676-300 or the E6 fit into a B or will the aftercooler get in the way? Oh and did they have jake brakes or a dynatard? how effective was the dynatard?

    Thanks all!

  16. mummn well the 12v71 i had a line on was sold a week after my intial call ..oh well.. i ma intersted in those kws  man sucks to be poor my wife already barely allowed me to by that b 81 ha...we just bought a van for the family too..mummnn my brother lives out in seattle may have to check it out... as for the cat  b model..man funny you mentioned that ..i was thinking about that myself as a freind has one for sale also..figured you could get aALOT of power pretty easy with one of them...if you built it right..the cooling capacity has been bugging me too not sure how i would do that.....i thought of  aE7 turned up with different injectors and teh computer tuning box ..supposedly good for 600 hp that way...mummn if i sell some of my cars i could have aenought $ to do something bad  ha..how much did you want for your 3406 b?

    thanks

    Deo

Cooling would be a big prolem but there is no saying you couldent put an aux radiator behind the cab or two smaller ones on the sides if you have the room. Each one could also have its own electric fan.

  17. I bought a "new to me" 99 F-250 4x4 ex-cab, back in October. Gotta love that 7.3L IH Powerstroke. Replaced a 95 351 v-8 w/ 4:11 gears. That diesel is 10 times the puller even with 3:73's in it. And talk about increased fuel mileage. I went from 5 to 12.5 in town. And from 11 to 16 on the big road. Yeah, diesel may cost more. But, it's still cheaper then filling up the old gasser was. It's got a 3 1/2 " exhaust that really turns some heads. The only way that I'd like it better is with a 4-53T Detroit. I looked at several nice Rams. I've heard great things about them. I have a neighbor w/ a 1996 dually Ram. He's got 500,000 mile on his Cummins. (rebuilt @ 400,000) I just seeemed to me that the interior felt "cheap." Like I would have to be careful not not break or scratch something. So far, only one problem with mine. Water pump went bad @ 126,000 miles. Other than that, I can't complain.

As long as were building dream trucks. How about a R model cab on a F-550 4x4 frame? 7.3L or a Detroit, 5x3 trans, air-ride, small bunk sleeper, and custom pick-up bed. Maybe some day, I'll win the lottery. ( I better start playin' first!  :P )

I sat in one of those srt10 Dodges, the one with the v10 viper engine. The interior is pretty sweet, much better then a stock 1500 I rode in once.

Looks like I am not the only one who wishes for a Cummins in a Chevy. While driving on the highway in nassau county, I herd this rumble of a jake brake and looked to see where it was coming from. Turns out this guy had a nice black Dodge 3500 with a cummins and the jacobs exhaust brake. He also had two stacks on the back of the bed that really went with the rest of the truck. And as for the Ford we know a guy in the carnival business who has those large game trailers and loves the IH in the Ford. He has a dodge with a cummins and jake and wishes the IH could have a jake too. Those trailers weigh up to 14k.

  18. yeah im hoping i can make it work ..the detroits torque is not that high and much higher in the rpm range ..so i think if i can keep the 20spd quad box it would be neat. I i can find a 6x6 mack mixer to part out  it would be cool to make it a 6x6... ;)  I do know where there is a old oshkosh 6x6 with a 671 in it  that is rough sitiing out size with broken windows and trash inside it i keep stopping by and checking it. I has a wierd front drive axle not the normal rear end looking style. I looks simlar toa tractor axle ie cast housing tapered axle tubes etc..i wonder what weight rating it would be?...I'll havbe to see if i can still get that 12v71.... I hope so. I heard of a 12v71 brockway going for scrap two weeks ago also..made me sick to my stomach....argh..got to keep looking for parts. Most of my freinds are not into trucks and think I'm crazy. Ha the friends i have that are into trucks still think im nuts.

    HAHA

Found these two Kenworth w925's. For 10 grand you get 2 cruddy kenworths with 12v71's. Lots of parts too. They are in Oregon so if your on the east coast then its gonna be a long haul. The sound they produce is nothing short if incredible. Someone has a site with actual sound clips of a 12v71 in a pulling truck. The site is http://www.telusplanet.net/public/ryq/.

  19. Happy New Year all.  I joined the site a few weeks ago.  Just getting around to say hi.  I have been driving construction equipment for almost 27 years.  My time driving has been in New York City and on Long Island.  I posted a few pictures in the gallery.  The F-900 that is attached was the first truck I drove (legally). For the first 15 years I drove concrete mixers, for the later I have been driving dump trucks.  I enjoy the site and can feel the passion that the members have for their trucks.

    John

Awww I remember those trucks. When I was little they were my favorite as they had all the colorful polka dots. Memories.
