There was a single cylinder Detroit too. A 1-53 and a 1-71. I think there were just used in generator sets for the military. Very few made and hardly any left. They might was well be made out of solid gold because if you find one that is how much the person will want for it.

Well now I need one of those to repower one of the two 1971 Massey Ferguson 7 lawn tractors I have!!

  2. The thing with me is I have a friend that is a 2 stroke Detroit expert, so if I get one of those Massey's he can make her run strong. Would be a cool tractor to take to the local fairs and antique pulls.

In this area where I grew up, 2 stroke Detroits were by far the most popular engine by far back in the day. When I was young almost every truck around here had a Detroit and many of the loaders and dozers were Terex with Detroits and Champion motor graders with Detroits.

  3. I always liked that era of Star and the Heritage cab with that sleeper. Nice truck you got there. Bonus points for Cat power!

Like the Aussie style snorkels. My friend did that to his Titan when the factory breathers rotted off from the road salt.

Any word on how the Stars are working out @Bullheaded?

Aside from all the driver abuse, they are going. They are gutless on our hills with that weight, they drop down to first gear every hill (X15 525/1850 Cummins Allison auto's) and the transmission warning lights come on every hill, except for the one good driver. He has yet to see a light come on.

But we all know how that works with slip seating and shift work.....one good driver that takes care of his unit gets to watch it get destroyed by the other seat covers.

Oooooooooooo make that 3 I forgot about the Hertz rental. I drove for a short while had a Detroit in it that thing was real loud.

I didn't really find them loud, but then again I was young. But they were pretty luxurious with the Custom Cab trim.

    I ran them with 6V53, 8V53, 8V71, and 3406B power.

  6. Cool picture. At first I thought Wilson's who hauled groceries here in Ontario, but then I saw Westcan on the doors of some of them. They are a big tanker outfit from Alberta and they (through their RTL Construction division) are the ones that build the ice roads around the Yukon. They are under new ownership now, called KAG Canada and they run mostly Mack.

If I could buy one of those new now I might still be interested in trucking. But I'm not.

  7. Yep, more safety police BS.  Here in Ontario you need Working At Height training for anything over 5.9 feet and you need fall arrest for 10 feet.

That's why when I was pulling walking floor and wood chip trailers I always loaded, then drove outside the mills to tarp. Those fall arrest systems and harnesses were more of a hindrance than anything.

Especially when you get caught hanging above you trailer with no help in the winter when one freezes up at minus 40. That happened to me once at a mill that installed their extravagant $50,000 air powered fall arrest system.

  8. Ya, I would have spec'd a few things different. It is a little low on power, especially since we have hills that are 15% grade on the haul road. (according to the display in the Cat wiggle wagons.) It drops down to first gear and just crawls.

The lift axle.....I can't figure that one out. Yes the dump box is a bit longer than most off road haul trucks, it has a 266 inch wheel base, but I wouldn't think it would be needed with the frame that's in that thing.

I thought maybe it is for some extra brakes, but it doesn't even have brakes on it. Somebody didn't think that one through.

Still though, it's a pretty nice truck. And the last of the real trucks.

  9. We got a new T880 float tractor at the mine just over a year ago. X15, 18 speed, 4.56 gears, 24.5 rubber, 52,000 rear air ride.

I only use the float couple times a year. It has a whopping 1500 KM on it now and the EGR cooler is leaking, the rad is leaking in the bottom corner, steers and handles like crap and has more rattles than you can imagine. 1500 KM. JUNK!

As for the other comments here.....I had this argument with someone else also.....I would take an old truck ANY DAY over the luxuries of the new ones. Don't care if I'm slower, colder, hotter, who cares.

When I had my R Model I never once turned the radio on even. Windows down and the sound of straight pipes. That is trucking to me.

I didn't grow up dreaming of driving a luxury car.

I'd even gladly take an all steel cab interior over listening to that rattling, squeaking cheap plastic piece of crap T880.

I used to watch Motorweek all the time and saw that. I LOVED my 2000 CH when I got it new. I remember when they were first introduced. There was a huge advertising campaign. I was disappointed the R Model was going away, but I was excited about the new CH.

Can't say I'm excited any more when there are new model introductions. It's more like disappointment. LOL But luckily I don't have to worry about it any more.

I get it. This is what trucks are now. I had a Heritage 4964 I bought brand new in '96. I loved that truck and it was tough, still going to this day.  Unfortunately they're all a lot alike anymore.

I hear you. I wonder how long before the specialty markets go away, like the 6900XD Star and the C500 Kenworth?
