  1. That's a nice fire truck! Big mill too!

Speaking of these new engines......wonder how the new International A13 integrated powertrain is going to be? They are making big claims. Max 1850 torque at 900 RPM, no EGR, no active regens. And their new automated 14 speed trans with no gross weight limits.

Wonder if this one will work this time?? LOL Hopefully they got more MAN and Scania working in these ones than the old MaxxFarce.

  2. Well I don't know about Volvo getting better? Another blunder in my opinion.....why did they get rid of the mid roof sleeper on the new Pinnacles? There were far far many more mid roof equipped Mack's than the big high rises.

Most Mack sleeper trucks were bought for regional stuff. This is about as stupid of a move as not offering it on the Titan.

The MP engines are bulletproof....except the injectors. The bottom end is probably the best. As for emissions issues,  well, they're like everybody else.

That's what I was wondering, is if they still had all the injector cup issues? They seem to pull well for their size?

As for the Detroit DD's only thing I had fail is the idler pulley assembly for the belts. They were $800 Canadian and plan on replacing one or two in a 5 year span.

I did have LOTS of regen issues on the 2013 but found out around 2019 it was mostly caused by the dealer. Previous times they were troubleshooting emission issues with a test light poking wire harnesses, which then corroded. But that 2013 did not like winter cold. regen every 8 hours.

The 2020, though I only drove it two summers and a winter before I quit trucking, never had any kind of issue. Seemed way better as far as emission system functioning.

the T800 was made for midgets. i could open the passenger door from the driver seat.

the T880 cab is twice the size of the T800 cab.  i am 6'1" and 290 lbs. the t800 tore up my hips and knees.

as far as being made for off road use, it is all how it is built.

our trucks are built for off road use, not on road. 565HP cummins engine instead of paccar engine. allison RDS4500 trans instead of the eaton fuller autoshift. heavy axles with 4.56 gears.

most order with paccar engines, small axles, and 3.90 highway gears.

my truck tops out at 65 mph, my friends 13 trucks will do over 100 if they push them.

Ours is X15 Performance 525 (yes, underpowered for what we do on our 15% hills), 18 speed, 4.56 rears on 24.5 rubber and 52,000 rear Neway suspension and 20,000 front.

I just found in 5,000 km it has already become a rattle trap. And the 20,000 front axle is a Paccar....and I don't know if it has different geometry than other brands of front steer axles but this is the worst handling/feeling truck I have ever driven. The front end never feels "connected" to the road and the steering is very heavy even with dual steering boxes.

The interior has good fit and finish and the plastics and upholstery feel better quality than most, but everything is squeaking and rattling already.

And what's with the armrests on the seats? They seem to be made for people with half length arms, LOL

I remember the mine manager was so proud when he presented that thing to me and I told him "you got ripped off because I have twice the truck sitting in my driveway at home that I got for same price you paid." LOL

Wish you could still get a Detroit in a long nose truck, that would truly bring back the feel of the old cats.

Makes you wonder what the DD16 feels like with 2050 max torque over the DD15.

LOTS more power. The DD16 600 was pretty much on par with the MP10. My friend has both in his log trucks.

And for some odd reason, at least in 2020 when I quit trucking......Detroit will only give you 1650 or 1750 torque now with a DD15 but will give you 1850 with a DD13. They had discontinued the 560/1850 DD15. Maybe that's how they were trying to lure people into a 13 litre??

And having ran both of those, 505 h.p. in a dump truck/pony at 140,000 pounds, I can say the DD13 was stronger, but the DD15 had more bottom end lugging power even at only 1650 torque.

From a dead stop, the DD15 505/1650 could out accelerate our ISX 550/1850. Same gears, tires, transmission. And it would outrun it up the hills until you made that downshift into low range on the 18 speed.....then the ISX would disappear.

These guys used to haul mail, same shit I can’t remember the name of the company F model sleepers

That's another beautiful styling that will never be matched again....the F model.

I never got to drive an F or Cruiseliner, but drove a few V8 MH Ultraliners which are in my top 3 favorite.

We had an outfit out here years back ran F models too many years ago. I can’t remember the name of the company but they had the same size fuel tanks. I talked to one of the drivers one day. He said they’re set up that way so they could run California to Elpaso and back without fueling.

One particular fleet we had here that had them was a steel hauler and they were green daycabs. But for the life of me I can't even remember their name now. I think it was Sureway Transport???

Imagine filling those tanks today! LOL

  8. I find the DD series Detroit feels the most like an old Cat. They have more low end torque than a Detroit and a more old school throttle feel (though the X15 is improved from the ISX)

Plus the Detroits don't sound like a gas engine with a bad case of spark knock.

My favorites up here Bob were what they called the Hamilton steel hauler specs.......long wheelbase with 60 or 72 inch rear axle spreads and fuel tanks from the front axle to the rears. They just looked cool.

  10. You love your T880 TJC? Wow. I hate the new one they got me at the mine.  I guess maybe they are just not made for off road. I found the old T800's had far less squeaks, rattles and clunks. Bummed me out that they replaced the N14 powered Autocar with that thing.

I drove some early 80's C500's and mid 2000 T800's and they all seemed pretty solid and rattle free.

My favorites were pre 2000 Mack's and after that my Cat powered 9900i and 5600i Internationals.

As much as I LOVE V8 Superliners, I still have to rate the R model as the all time most versatile truck ever made. R's have done everything from long haul, to dump trucks to hauling logs off road, to hauling super load floats. My friend used to haul oversize up to the Yukon all the time with his R. Everything from big mining equipment and Euclids, to crushing plants.

  11. I know most members here are mostly in to old Mack's, but I was curious, if you had to buy a new truck which new emissions engine would you go with?

How does the new MP Mack compare to a Cummins as far as reliability?

I haven't had a Mack since 2000 (E7460), but as far as the last trucks I ran, when it comes to the choice between Cummins and Detroit DD, I prefer Detroit. Last one I had was a 2020 but now I work as an employee since I gave up trucking and I occasionally run our float truck which has an X15 Performance.

I prefer the way the Detroit's feel, run, pull and sound. Plus have had far fewer hard part failures with Detroit than Cummins. But the Cummins seems to have a bit better functioning emission system? At least I've experienced far fewer regen issues with Cummins ISX and X15's than Detroit DD's.

Just curious where we would rate the new Volvo Mack's? Since there never seems to be much talk about the new junk.

  12. Man, those bring back so many good memories. There is NOTHING made today that is as nice as those old Mack's....inside or out. Even handling....I've driven through every kind of horrible winter storm and my old R models never did anything to scare you. They just handled so good.....they inspired confidence.

  13. I had several 6.0 Powerstroke diesels.

Left stock they can be good. Thus why I think the VT365 International version in medium duty trucks seemed to live no problem. Mine got way better fuel mileage empty and towing than my 07 5.9 Cummins Ram dually.

But first thing you need to do.....flush that garbage Motorcraft Gold coolant out. That was the biggest cause of the head gasket failures. The silicates settle out of it over time, then plug the EGR and OIL coolers, which then causes flash boiling in the cylinders and then blown head gasket. I ran Cat extended life coolant in mine.

Second, if you program for big power stock, like I did, it will blow up.  When it does, stud it, run good coolant and oil and they are a great motor. I also deleted my EGR which really helps.

I love the way those V8's sound.

  14. As far as the appliances, no I don't expect new throw away crap to live as long as old. I used to have 30 year old appliances but when they finally died I bought new and now I replace every 5 or so years.

I have a friend that used to have his own appliance repair business and he closed it and went trucking. I asked home if he was insane. He said "I can't take the repair business any more with this new stuff. Do you know how hard it is to tell someone that broke the crisper drawer in their fridge you may as well go buy a new fridge because it's cheaper than that drawer."

He said everything is throw away junk now.
