Hi, 351 clevelands spin to over 7000rpm with pushrods and lifters. will try the engineering place, thankyou. the fuel pump isnt a problem, I can do it 2 ways, new cam in the pump or re route the fuel lines. am still unsure on firing order swap yet, would like to here from some one at Mack who may know why they chose that firing order to begin with.

    does any one know the lift/duration and all the cam specs on the 866? I dont have this in the book.

  2. Hi, thought about the v12, but the 866 is more favourable because I have one. trying to find old engines here is crazy, they still want 15,000 for a E9 that the cant gaurantee.

    I spoke to someone last week that wants 3000 for an 866 crank shaft for an engine that reality is its to old, no one really uses because parts are to hard to get for it. yet they still want the earth for it.

    where to find E9 pistons and liners is the next thing.

Hi, turbo is not a drama, many sizes out there. liners, well the machineing is so close that it appears to be a fairly simple exercise. the piston pin height on the 866 to E9 is the same so this makes it more of a reason to do it. the cam regrind is not a problem, Ivan Tighe engineering can do this to any profile i want. the firing order is the curious one, engineers predict a 30% gain in just switching to the new firing order. its hard to explain but #1 fires then all the power that #1 just made is working to get #5 up the bore for it to fire, then this is cylinder is working to get # 4 up there. the new fireing order when number 1 has fired # 3 is all ready on its way up due to crank configuration. this will give a smoother running engine thats under less torsional stress.

    how ever in saying that, why did Mack use the fireing order they have? BMW also run the same fireing order as Mack.

    Ford windsors in the 60s ran a 1.5 firing order but later changed to the 1,3 firing order due to harmonic issues etc

  4. Hi, so has any one played with firing order changes on the V8? I am looking at converting this one to the same firing order as a ford cleveland 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8 instead of the 1,5,4,8,6,3,7,2 the reason is for less load on the crank pins from 1 an 5 then making the back end of the crank do all the work 4,8 the flex and stress on the crank must be huge.

    am also fitting E9 pistons and liners tot he 866 block due to lack of 866 liners. this will give it a piston size of 5 n 3/8 inch instead of the 5 n 1/4

  5. Hi, fixed it, great. now you can work out how to pop that steeing wheel on the proper side :)

    yes the traffic there is busy that time in the morning. My coupe broke down there on the corner of 59th an 104th if I have them correct, just near the auto shop, it was peak hour 5pm ish, bonnet up un the middle of the road, not good.

  6. Hi, no sorry, your wrong, no wonder you have so many accidents over there, the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car! remember thsat saying from a famous film???

    I had a look at my pump today, it has an allen head center and 2 slits on outer for a fairly wide mack tool. you should be able to get the whole thing out with out a problem.

    I will be back in Naperville as soon as I can, next time I am over there I wont be coming back here.

  7. Hi, dont you love those fuel issues :) try ddealing with it 500miles from hom with 2 trailers on. :)

    on the correct drivers side of the pump at the back there is a valve that has a spring and a needle in it, there about 800bucks from mack, pop this out and give it a clean. its the fuel pressure reg, mine was rusty and causing it problems, its next to the rack at the back with allen key hole in center. drop the hole thing out.

    the little valves in the transfer pump are easy to change to, there only like 5 bucks each, those valves are in the top when you pop the fittings out the pump.

  8. Hi, if you are talking about LPG then its not to bad. Australia has been using it for years. the older engines require an upper cylinder lubricant that is sucked in through vaccuum and thats about it. they need a little more advance on timing and the lpg does like more comp.

  9. Hi, the oil pressure is up there on the V8s. I just killed an 866 cause oil pressure was 10 at idle and up around the 30s on the move. not any where near where it should be. as mackcl96 said is about what it should be. the only thing that adjust oil pressure down stairs is an spring a bit over 4inchs long, its obviously working fine, mine came out in a million bits.

    I would do an oil change on it tho and then you as the new owner 100% know what oil is in it.

  10. Hi, funny enuf you should mention antifreeze, the water pump was broken when i got it and the oil was grey.

    Skip, I have found new big ends and mains, new rings and a complete gasket set, all non gen and here in Australia

    bearings...under 600 for full set. still available genuine to but alot more expensive.

    rings.........1200.00 4 differant types need these ones out firstly.

    gaskets......500.00

    Crane will do a new cam shaft for it.

    cylinder head rebuild and bigger exhaust valves and K liners not a problem.

    can get the block back filled and line bored no problem. the thing is it will all ways be down on power so am looking for an E9.

  11. Hi, i found a broken spring in the oil pump, thats where the oil pressure went. pulled another main cap off today. this one is alot bigger than the 4th one back, so would say the poor crank has been thrashing around for a while, block needs line bore. so best I pull it out and all over.

Hi, I can get stds, 10 or 20 thou under. piston rings, full gasket sets. and i can even get a differant grind on a cam shaft for more power. the thing is how far do i go? how much hp can i make out of it? is it going to hold together? down here trucks are pulling 3 trailers so the more torque the things got the better it is but how much am i going to extract out of an engine that only made 375hp and 1100lbs from the factory?

    what else can i put in there? or what did these make as a marine engine and what did they do to them?

Hi, well 16500kms and all over. bang. it spun number 4 main bearing. have sourced new ones, my question now is do I pull it out and fully rebuild it, or should i just roll in new bearings. it went bang because it did have oil pressure problems, under 10lbs when idling hot and only 30lbs when running. so i know why it went bang. I dropped the trailers on the side of the road and even crawled it 40miles home. bet a cat or any any other engine wouldnt have done that.

    so whats peoples thoughts? do these have any other issues when this happens?

    an Rob, sump gaskets are available at the moment. 36 bucks each.
