  1. cab would definitely have to come off to remove the head with the engine still in the truck. i would have passed on this job all together if it would have been a 6.4. however after pulling the intake manifold it looks like the engine should come out. the engine being set so far back really makes it a pia. its almost like working on a van without a removable dog house.

without a lift removing the cab would be a job in itself.

  2. I don't know if anyone knows what the book time would be or have a general idea but I am putting a engine in a 2007 ford f-250 superduty 5.4L gasser. I have not quoted a price they just asked if i had time to get it done or not and at the moment i do so they had it taken over to my shop i started on it today. newest ford i have done before was a early 2000's this one seems like there is a lot more that has to come off to get out of the way than normal. most pickups I have done in the past i would have had the engine out and laying on the shop floor by now. so far all i have gotten done on this one is just getting everything out of the way. still have to separate the trans from the motor, motor mounts and drop the ac compressor and exhaust off the motor before its ready to lift out.

being that i havent done one quite this new before im not sure how much i should charge for it. something like a late 90's chevy 350 i would probably charge somewhere between 12-15 hours pretty sure i will have a fair bit more time into this one considering iv got about 6.5 in it so far but don't want to over charge due to having to take some time to figure a few things out ect. but don't want to undercharge and cut myself short either.

so i guess in short if anyone knows what the book time on this job would be or about how long should be charged for it that would be helpful

a few pics to show just how much shit has to come out before you can pull the motor.

  3. they have been talking about this for a while now. yes 750k is a bit outdated but looking at claim statistics i dont remember the exact number but i think it was less than 1% result in caims of more than 750k. in reality 750k number does not mean much because if you want to get a load from anyone you pretty much have to have at least 1 mill in insurance. 4.5 mill is ridiculous unless your hauling hazmat or things that could result in huge environmental clean up problems.

  4. grease hubs should have the bearings re-packed periodically. i always run oil. a guy that i know who is very knowledgeable and has more time under his belt than i do runs the Lucas hub oil. i was giving him a hand with one of his trailers one day and when I filled the hubs. it was very thick liquid almost grease like but did flow. kinda the best of both worlds i would run that stuff in my trucks but i always have some bottles of 80/90 around and just grab and use that every time i need some. i should get a few bottles to put on my shelf but never think to grab some and always keep 80/90 on hand

  5. the one in the picture does not appear to be setup to be able to be hooked too a 5th wheel the dolly is basicly part of the trailer. could probably be cut off and have a kingpin welded on and landing gear installed. there are probably some out there that are setup with a 5th wheel converter dolly but might be harder to find.

  6. they were looking a little long in the tooth. it was a good show however. probably glad I didn't have a front row seat for the tutu

the other half had mentioned the concernt back before Christmas so i bought tickets for a Christmas present then i had forgotten about it till yesterday when she said we needed to get ready to leave. I guess she expects me to remember things...lol

  7. here is one from this last spring. truck made a wrong turn and turned into a farmers approach rather than the road he was supposed to turn on 1/4 mile past the road ended in a feild. then he noticed the trucks hauling to the job on the road about a mile away so he decided to continue across the feild till he sunk it in the soft ground

  8. got the breaks fixed

i learned about replacing whole backing plate and everything several years ago i tryed to get just shoes for a trailer and they said they would have to special order then and then told me that they had the whole assembly on hand for a cheaper price.

i am not a fan of surge brakes although both have there drawbacks and i much prefer air breaks but for something that gets pulled with a pickup i like electrics best.

i found that they were actually working after replacing the wiring but they were way out of adjustment and the adjusters were stuck. so it was a free fix

  9. i have been renting car trailer a few times a year when i needed to move things that i didn't want to use this one for and only using this one for small stuff and dump runs and things like that because this trailer was in poor shape. lights didn't work deck was rotten trailer breaks not working ect. i finally decided it was time to go ahead and fix up my old trailer. only have about $250 into it so far. only thing left to figure out is why the trailer breaks are not working even after running new wires to them. going to pull the wheels off soon and check them out but worst case whole new break assembly's are not that much.

  10. government doesn't necessarily mean its a better vehicle. i know one guy bout a 10 year old pickup with 25k miles on it at a government auction and had nothing but problems transmission went out after a few months followed by the motor a few months later then after that the rear end went out. come to find out later the pickup was a state park vehicle that was used on a state park that was about 5 square miles. so it had 25k miles put on it only a few miles at a time. depends a lot too on how good state garage is. like any other fleet vehicle some may be serviced on time and taken care of out of one shop and everything left to go to manure at another.

i stopped going to our government auctions quite a while ago i refuse to spend full blown retail or better at a auction. If I am going to pay a price like that I will find a equivalent at a car dealer where i can properly check it out and test drive it before purchase.

most are pretty basic models fleet speced. pickups are normally cloth or vinal bench seats manual windows and door locks some even without cruse control just basic bare bones fleet specs for the most part.

  11. it seems to me anything government auction brings big money. iv gone to our local government auction a couple of times. most times i never even place a bid threw the whole auction because people are starting bids at around what my top dollar on each car is and they end up paying full blown retail or higher prices.

  12. yeah i will seal it when im done, my plan was to just spray it down with used motoroil after replaced the tail lights and ran all new wiring. but i decided that the new deck looked too good and i needed to spiff up the rest of the trailer, so i cleaned it all up with some flap wheels and knotted wire wheels on the angle grinder and painted the rest of the trailer with that spray can truck bed liner. threw some dot tape on it and new led lights now i think the rest of the trailer looks too good to motor oil the deck. maybe i will do linseed oil or deck sealer instead.
