That Kenworth tanker sounded like it had a big cat under the hood.

What I was told about the Alco RS3, was the fact it was a long hood, was it was one of the first diesels and the long hood mimic's a steam engine. Pretty much all the later stuff were short hoods(like GP's and SD's)
Due to circumstances beyond my control I was given the benefit of playing longer then typical. The other gentlemen that was doing it was a 95 yr old WWII veteran. It was pretty cold out and he didn't stay on for the entire time limit. The engineer offered me more play time if I wanted to? Well, HELL YA!!!
We were hooked to a tank car and was dragging it up and down an access track for their property(off CSX rail yard in Cleveland). Pretty cool to play with I must say. After the veteran was helped off the engine I asked if my g/f could ride(typically that is not allowed), but was told "that's okay". Karen hopped on and we played some more until it was time to put things away. The engineer took the controls and we shuffled some cars around and put things back were they started from and then rode back into the roundhouse. About 3 hours worth!
I have been familiar with the organization for a few years, but never joined. I joined and hope to make some time to actually volunteer to work on the equipment. They own and are restoring the 4070 that used to pull the cars for the Cuyahoga Valley Line. I rode behind it back in the early 80's?(and still have a badge from it somewhere).
Heres a engineers side view from silver pilot the last E5 locomotive in existence the Nebraska zephyr cool old iron pretty slow track speed as seen on the speedometer..

Being with the amvets we usually are in the front of the parade this one we were number 83 being there for the first time. I did one earlier in the day we were number four which is nice after I go through the route we pull over and watch the rest of the parade.

I'm paid by the load so I'm doing 60 in a 55 and 70 on the big road. I'm pretty easy going but if you see a truck coming up on you in the left lane stay in the right unless your doing the speed limit.
The ones that really get you mad are the ones that yank out in front of you when there is no one behind you so what is so hard to let you pass at the speed limit and just pull out after you have gone by?

My truck won't do the 70 mph speed limit don't get mad at me but it is of the brown variety.
My truck wont do 70 either but when we are on a two lane and speed limit is 55 I'm doing 60 whether Im loaded or empty.

If they are working for a fuel bonus great use the right lane and when on a two lane get it up to speed limit if you cant do that stay on the big road. That's the trouble around here no respect for others don't hold up traffic to put a few bucks in your pocket or plan your route better so your not being the a$$hole holding up traffic. Its the screw them attitude if they don't like it I'm here and I don't care if there is a half mile long line of cars and trucks behind me. I knew a guy who would follow someone like that when they went in a rest stop he would pull the release on their fifth wheel they would take off and the trailer went down and sat on their frame. He used to sit in the lot and laugh while the fat a$$ had to crank a loaded trailer up to slide back under it.

Got to watch out for that Schneider tanker he will yank right out in front of you and drive 40 MPH to where ever he is heading to and what a surprise he is black too. I wanted to yank him right out of that truck last summer when he did it to me twice in the same week.

On his defense as someone mentioned trailer weren't working.... .Was just wondering if you fellas ever heard...The word out here is 1500 fine for texting in a commercial vehicle.....bob

We had two of our pipe drivers get dinged for texting while driving state of Illinois gives companys big points against them for driver committing those offenses. Our shop manager was pretty POed because that raises our insurance rates and gives you a black eye with the state good thing they were friends with the "right people".

We have a lot more Schneider trucks to deal with now going up and down rt 20 seems like a lot more on Mondays 45 MPH specials. I get stuck behind them from where the four lane ends all the way to 47 10 miles an hour under the speed limit all the way really ticks me off I don't want to sound prejudice here but most are black and weigh somewhere around 300 pounds must be a new company requirement.

Just kicking around the idea depends on how ambitious I feel and how the cash situation goes.

I guess I have always been a fan of V-8s but wedging a 3700 pound engine into that straight frame is a pretty big undertaking.
-
That truck or trailer wont ever be the same lots of twisted steel in that frame and dump body.

I have a dilemma my superliner I'm restoring has a 300 plus engine which I did an in frame overhaul on last fall and has 0 miles on it what is a ball park figure as far as value? I have a line on a cat 3408 since this truck is going to be a parade truck and do shows the cat would be a much more impressive addition to the truck. I have also noticed the parts availability for the 3408 is much better and really not any more expensive and since the span of time I will own the truck it isn't going to be worked very hard. I'm not sure the 3408 will fit in between the straight frame rails of a Hayward built truck it is 998 cubic inches like a E9 so if the E9 fits the Hayward superliner the cat should also. Since this is totally funded by me for our veterans parades and to do shows the cost of the E9 wouldn't really be practical and a 866 really is harder to find parts for so thats my dilemma plus the fact I'm a glutton for punishment like I don't have enough to do on this truck to begin with. I was at the monthly meeting with the veterans group I'm affiliated with they were all excited about the engine transplant because the more wow factor the truck has the more our cause for the guys gets noticed and the fact I'm laid off for the winter doesn't make this any easier. This all hinges on what I'm able to sell the rebuilt 300 plus for to offset the cost of the bigger engine any suggestions would be helpful.

Looks like this guy got a good lesson in paying attention to whats going on in front of you lucky for him he was empty.http://cdllife.com/2017/trucker-life/video/video-truck-jackknifes-hard-avoid-slowed-traffic/

https://www.paiindustries.com/catalog/fraCatalog.php This is what I use for reference also easy to buy parts because they give you the mack and PAI numbers.

....the train that derailed could have called out that something had happend and approaching traffic should slow...
I thought that too, he was on the main so he know the crude train was approaching and should have given him a heads up when his train went into emergency.

That happened 2 miles from my house! It was on the edge of Casselton, ND about 1/4 mile from where my kids were at daycare, lucky nobody was hurt.
Now you just got a drivers side view of how it happened.

Lucky it didn't end up like the inferno they had in Canada.

Another south of the border professional.

http://truck.speedsociety.com/railway-train-derailment-and-train-collision-is-scary/?source=td Scary stuff here we never had one go into a uncommanded emergency we hit a pick up truck back in the 70s and were put into emergency. Its pretty eerie to know you have a problem behind you and not know what it is I'm really surprised the grain train engineer didn't give the crude train engineer the heads up sooner though.

Hope there is skid plates under those fuel tanks or there will be problems down the line.
Check this movie out...

Your probably right I forgot Kenworth did run those in their trucks in the 70s.
