Easy to fix. Many different ways to program them so they still show they are speed limited when plugged into, but will still run wide open. We've had to deal with this in Ontario Canada for a couple years now.

It just seems like a couple of years, its amazing how time flys. Its been 6 years now. Started Jan. 01/2009.

I know guys that have the trucks reprogrammed, or a hidden switch that will allow them to run faster than the speed limiter.

I've never had to worry about speed limiters on my old mechanical Macks.

Exempt because Its manufactured before 1995, and doesn't have an ECM.

  2. Paul, when the ground freezes it expands. Clay can expand more than sandy ground. Your footings need to be on ground you know won't freeze. If the ground under your footing freezes, it will raise the footing, screwing up foundation walls and the structure that's on it.

Our frost line is 121.9 cm or 4 ft. I put water services down 5 ft.

  3. I think green dash summed it up properly.

Before I plowed snow, I used to drive a furnace oil delivery truck. I remember well what its like getting into residential and farm driveways in the winter. Some of them were very tough. I always had a shovel and a 2 pails of sand on my truck.

You got out without wrecking anything . Good job, in my book!!!

  4. Well making a little more progress ! had to use the boom truck to "nudge" the building into "square" but we got it!

I think you need otherdog to photoshop in some safety harnesses and lines.. lol

Looks good. I find it interesting that your sheeting with plywood. Will you put steel on top of that? A pole barn built here would't have anything between the steel and the wood frame. Your shop will be as solid as a brick shit house.

  5. Silver 92's came out in 81,82; TA means turbo & aftercooled it's got a cooler under the blower; it will have a water pipe coming out in front of blower going to left side lower thermostat housing; easiest way to tell drop oil pan; if main bearing requires a 15/16 12 point to get down its a silver engine; or get serial number off the block; right side; could be in the back by airbox covers or up front more toward top of block; I have seen some green ones painted silver!!

Thanks 1965, for the info. I was told that a silver 92 was electronic. I had no idea that they were around earlier.

My buddy has what is remaining of the engine. It seems like a lot of parts are missing, and the rest of it has sat out in the weather for the last 16 years. So you can imagine what it looks like ( a pile of rusted crap) . I am going to look at the bolts on the main bearings though. It would be cool if it was a silver.

    Thanks

    Keith

    Keith,

I looked last night on govliquidation.com and there is a rebuilt 8V-92TA (0hrs.) in a nice enclosed crate up for auction. It is in Ft. Riley,Kansas.Goes up for auction in a few days. FYI Al

Thanks for the info on the auction Al. I sent the link to my buddy. Told him he needed to buy it. That would be very cool addition to the general.

    Thanks

    Keith

Sorry I am late to the General party. That looks like a pretty good rig your buddy found. I like the sleeper, I wish I had a 48"-60" on mine. The bodies are aluminum so they take the weather pretty decent. No worry about the rust worm. Silvers came out in the early 80's. Mine is an 84 with a Silver 8v92 in it. Fleet Truck Parts (Google it) has bumpers under $400 if you don't go nuts with style options or just click this: www.fleettruckparts.com/Truck-Bumpers/GMC-General-Bumpers.

Go all out and stuff an 12v92 in there. That will wake up the neighbors.

Thanks for the link and the info JT. I have been trying to convince him to go with a 12V also. There was one in a snowblower up here that I told him to buy and put in it.

    Thanks

    Keith

  6. In 88 it should have been a silver engine; am sure they probably checked it out good before removing but silver 92's weren't bad about spinning bearings; might had slipper bearings go out & seize cylinder kits; they had recall on them back then that wasn't advertised to good

Once in a while,I've seen some 8V-92TA's on the Gov. Liquidations website. They're surplus. Some have very little or no hours on them. Probably alright for a hobby truck. Bad news is,they're usually at least 1000 miles from wherever you're at(+ 1000 miles if in Canada)! They don't go for real big $$$$,but again they are down here in the lower 48,sorry! Al

Its not my truck. Its my buddys. I just offered to help because I'm a little shy of $$$$$$ for my Crap projects. So this is the best way to get my truck fix. So I don't know a lot about it.

But by the look of things though, It looks like its an '85. So I don't think it would be a silver 92.

Its interesting Al, you called it a 8V-92TA……. That's what's on the line setting ticket.
