  1. I know some of this doesn't look 100% safe, but it is more stable than you would think. I need to burn out 5 or 6 more bolts, get another 5 or 6 with impact gun and the rail should be out. I do wish it was going a little quicker, but things have been going pretty smooth so I shouldn't complain. Thanks, Andy
  2. What is the plan, paint job and a general clean-up? Gonna change anything, color scheme or anything? Andy
  3. Didn't get nearly enough done today unfortunately, but some progress was made. I will let the pics do most of the talking, hopefully I can get the engine and transmissions cribbed up tomorrow. Gotta keep this project rolling. Thanks, Andy
  4. That is my thought Paul, it is going to be a tractor, and I plan on putting the winch back on mostly because I like the way it looks. Even with the winch I think it will be a rather long looking tractor, but I suppose there is nothing wrong with that. Andy
  5. Yeah, it was kind of funny, the lady got out of her car and said "did the car in front of you stop short"? I responded by saying the person in front of me stopped, I stopped, and then you didn't.... she didn't like that too much. But everyone was alright, so it wasn't too bad, I was more worried that she was letting her little boy walk around and it was a dangerous intersection. I'm by no means an intelligent guy, but it seemed like a bad idea to me....... Andy
  6. The moving van is the first truck my father drove, the fire truck is going to be used to restore the moving van. It is not my truck and not my project, but I was asked to do some work on it possibly at some point. We will see, but I have my hands full anyway. Andy
  7. Well, I had to work a couple double shifts and Saturday morning, but I finally got the stubborn winch off. There were a couple bolts that did not want to come out, but with the fire wrench and an air hammer I got them. I cut off the back of the frame roughly where I think it previously had ended. I think that I want to put a pintle plate on it as well, and I would assume I need to add a crossmember at the very back of the frame. The plan is to go over everything with the pressure washer again tomorrow morning and set the truck up on some cribbing. Hopefully by days end the DS frame rail is out of truck, but that is probably wishful thinking. What do you guys think, should I leave the WB length as is, or shorten it? I'm definitely having the complete new frame rails fabricated and drilled by PG Adams and probably the crossmembers as well. Thanks, Andy
  8. I have the same concerns, however I'm usually pretty driven when I decide to take on a project. It might take a while, but I usually power through it. We will see what happens, I hope to get alot done this weekend. Here are some more pics of the frame, it is pretty bad in spots. Andy
  9. Got a little more done, I've worked on it a few hours every night this week. Need to get the torch bottles re-filled, there are still a few stubborn bolts in the winch, but it is almost ready to come off. I'm torn on weather or not to take the cab off for this or just leave it be. I really want to leave the cab, engines, and transmissions in place. Even though this is a major project I would like to do it in small portions and keep the truck as operational as possible. Any input/suggestions are appreciated, thanks. Andy
  10. Thanks, it's funny you say that about the A/C. I'm an HVAC tech, and I'm almost done installing central air in his house now. I'm pretty lucky in terms of friends we all help each other out and nobody complains. I'm looking for a gently used system for his shop now, but haven't come across anything. I have A/C in my shop but don't have the tools needed for this job. Andy
  11. Got a little done, it was hot and mostly all torch work. I wanted to get the winch off, but being as busy as it is there wasn't a machine in the yard to pick it off. Instead, I focused on the front of the truck. I'm hoping to get the winch off during the week sometime, then maybe pull the DS rail on Sunday. There is a huge lifting eye on the engine, I'm hoping I can rig up a gantry of some sort to support the engine from there. Cribbing it likley won't be easy. I realized I made a mistake, the WB is 217" on the truck currently, and that is what the VIN data plate reflects. I think I'm gonna leave the WB it's current length. Another interesting thing is that it appears the frame was originally red and the cab and fenders were white. I think I want to leave it grey and black though. On another note, thanks guys. It's cool to be able to share this project with other like minded individuals. I'm pretty sure my buddy (who is currently letting me work out of his shop) thinks I'm bat-shit crazy, although he is being very helpful.
  12. Rocky Marciano's home town. Andy
  13. I was able to pic up the title and the missing passenger side seat for the truck today. I spoke with the guy who refurbished the pile driving rig and it is in service. He showed me a few pictures and it is impressive to say the least. The best I can do for you guys is a link to a video of it on YouTube so you can get a glimpse. Then on the way home someone did a number on their car with my trailer hitch. Thanks, Andy
  14. I don't want to sound like an idiot, but what is X-10 ? Thanks, Andy
  15. Thanks for the pics Truck Shop, that thing is cool. Andy
  16. Wow, superdog, those are all very cool. What's not to love about a R700? Andy
  17. You sure come across alot of cool old rigs, too bad about the 5+4. Still a very cool truck. Andy
  18. Behind every failing business there is always failing management looking for someone to blame. Not to say poor union negotiation weren't a factor, but I doubt it was the only factor.
  19. Wow, that is impressive stuff! Snap a pic of the 210 if you get back over there! Andy
  20. Thanks for the info, I was able to talk to Ron, and he is a very nice guy and gave me some good info and much needed encouragement. He has a guy that can repop the fenders, so that is a relief for me. He also said he had the same sort of frame issues with his truck. I would love to not have to fix the frame, but to me I need to fix it before doing anything to this truck. I looked it over again this weekend and after my researching frame repair I think I have the most economical solution in mind. My plan is to move the rear axles forward roughly 3 feet, splice in new inner rails in from about a foot under the cab and splice new outer rails in about 4 feet behind the inner splice. I sent some info to PG Adams, and waiting for a quote. I also have a line on a used mag drill for short money, I'm hoping to check that out tomorrow. As I was looking more closely at the truck I found that it was originally a tractor and the wheelbase was as you see it in the pictures. On the VIN tag it is listed as having a 270" WB, and it was most definitely a tractor. The frame was stretched, but the splice is right behind the rear axles. Andy
  21. Wow, thanks alot. That is very cool, I couldn't find alot of info on them. You don't happen to have the same brochure for an F210D? Maybe I could compare the info on the two, and it would answer some of my questions. Andy
  22. Thanks for all the advice guys, been real busy with work and haven't accomplished anything on the truck. I have been hunting around for a parts truck, and may have found something that will work but I'm not sure. I found a truck in a salvage yard that is close, but it is a different model. The model designations of old IH trucks is still rather confusing for me but I'm hoping someone can confirm the the frame of this truck is compatible with my truck. This is the truck, http://candhtruck.com/trucks/1146. From what I gather this is a gas powered rig and the cab is mounted higher to allow for taller hood side panel. I'd guess that is just for engine serviceability, and I'm hoping that was accomplished with some bolt on frame brackets. Thanks, Andy
  23. Here is a link: http://candhtruck.com I'm looking at a parts truck they have listed in there online catalog, they say it is a parts truck and will not sell as a complete unit. I want the frrame, fenders and some other small parts. Ideally, i'd like to buy the entire truck for ease of transport and to get the most for my money. Has anyone done business with these folks? Im hoping they will consider it not a complete unit in its current state and with the VIN removed. Thanks, Andy
