Pulled the oil pan today... nothing that popped out to show breakage or wear... gonna pull some caps tomorrow and check the journals....idk we’ll see what happens.
So your cap outcome???what did ya see!

Come on
Pro your just sore cause you drew the short straw on the gray vs red engine job admit IT!Seriously we used to sell Hino Very reliable and so on How ever They leaned how to price parts from the Volvo Guys! I ts industry wide I suppose !

I like IT! Get rid of the piece of crap bolted to the back of the turbo And now you got an EGR Valve that's easily accessible you can actually see what your working on Beauty ! Oh you say you can only buy it with the crap behind the turbo? Dam!

Agree with your statement there everything has its issues! How ever we will see How many times You do the cup thing ! at 6000 a popif they nuckled down and actually redesign the heads on these the rest of the engines ARE quite strong !

Check fan the hub just cause it’s turning don’t mean it’s working

Oh ya that’s the plan the pan sensor( level ) as well all sensors are dollar store quality on most new HD vehicles specially volvo .

This morning the overflow side of the expansion tank is empty as it should be and I cracked the cap and there is no pressure......dare I say my problem has been resolved? I think it might be.
FOR NOW? You can repair it anytime you like / but it will never be fixed , with out Volvo admitting that they have a problem with these heads and actually Doing a TOTAL redesign of the head this will be an ongoing issue . they seem to like beating YOUR head against the wall ! AND after all, after Warranty ! Comes YOU PAY and that's what Makes EM happy! AND why build something dependable , you can't make any money that way! 👿

JUST MY OPINION! If the truck is not under warranty it seems pointless to change the ECU unless your still having grief with it throwing codes just hose out the connector a couple of times and resemble it and see what happens! Its and extra 1000- 2000 bucks that you won't have to give TO THE VOLVO TRASH PEOPLE!
We have done this dozens of times with good success rate!

Sorry MT I Don't qualify on that one!

They got as far as casting there name in the block anyway!
Now with the exception of the external parts Volvo is etched into all the internal rubbish!

Your bro there is the lucky one ! You drew the short straw for sure!( If I were to " like any of them" ) I would say the MP8 Design over MP7 MP10 for less "complication" THE lesser of 3 Evils! can't comment on the CR yet had the valve cover off only one for a sensor change!

Its unfortunate how ever These engines has moved forward or backward which ever way you want to view it with out first addressing the original issues injector cup to injector seal ECT they seem to have accepted this situation as OK for what ever reason OK is good enough for Volvo! So now LETS ADD INSULT TO INJURY. Put more shit under the valve cover on an already compromised set up! Just shows you what the mind set of the management is really like in Volvo land and what kind of a company it really is!
KScarbel has been preaching this since the the Volvo thrashers took the brand over and I had similar thoughts as well ! However they are creating work for people and in more that one way . by building and adding to an inferior unit adds more work for us guys that have to deal with the crap !Unfortunately, we can make it work again for awhile But it will never be fixed! Inspiration for a song Hotel VOLVO TRASH!😀 ( we can make it work again ,but it will never be fixed!)🤣

Well that’s predictable ! We haven’t had a lick of problems so far however we only got a few running here so far! Nice heads up thou !
all low kms so far!

google mp8 common rail engine pics
-
An observation ! There is a spacer under the valve cover with two wiring harnesses entering mid way LH side of the engine on a common rail engine just above the ecu.

compression in the fuel usually!

Was there any timing codes ?

In my opinion the pump was likly installed to overcome failing injector cup issue common issue with these now its to the point you need to address the real problem

First check the air filter to see if clean. Does the truck have a boost gage? If not get a mechanical pressure gage up to 30-45psi from the hardware or part store and plumb it into one of several ports on the intake manifolds. At 1200-1800RPM's with a load on the pressure should be 15-18psi. E9's normally do not have more boost than that. If it does not get that high then check for intercooler leaks as stated before. If that checks OK them it is the turbo, head and piston or all three.
There can be a cylinder or 2 out before these engines really start to vibrate above 1200RPM's or so. I can say from experience that what you are describing an exhaust valve seat dropped and got chewed up. It is more common with the E9's than in most engines. The exhaust seats do not have a good press fit from the factory or Mack reman, and if run a little hot have a tendency to fall out. I went to the Macungie show a few years ago and dropped a valve seat 2000 miles from Phoenix AZ and drove it that way, home, smokin, low on power, waisted turbo from the seat pieces going through it. Still passing everything is sight and smokin out all along the way. That engine had reman heads with 18,000 miles on them.
If that all checks OK then start looking at the fuel pump and injectors.
Why did the the guy say he was selling the truck? How many miles on it or the rebuild? What is the idle RPM? Should be 650.
( Good call V8 ) being an unknown truck if it has dropped a seat and been driven for some length of time the pounding sound will have gone away and you end up with a miss rough running and smoke ! I Also had this happen ! bad news is if this is the issue your repairs will likley include Minimum At least 1 piston a head maybe a liner or two and a turbo aint goin to be a cheap fix these days !
Let us know what ya find!
-
Bud thanks for keeping us up dated Good find!
-
aftercooler cracked or turbo or AIR FILTER ???
when you get home and after u check the air filter make a plug for the turbo out put side disconnect the hose from the turbo to the after cooler put regulated air to it 30 psi to start should find any leak you need to worry about! sometimes intake gaskets shit out as well this method will find ALL the leaks.
Note you may have to turn the engine a bit by hand to get the valves to close enough to build preasure! MAKE SURE THE STOP IS PULL OUT!!!!!
THESSE ENGINES START EASY USUALLY!
-
What color is the smoke! ? this may help us trll you what is wrong!
-
well it sounds like ya need to look into the blo by situation that don,t sound good is it puffing at the fill tube? if so you lkly got a bad hole!

My god bro don't even go there ! Find a truck with the proper trans in it for the job, way to labor intensive, not impossible but ,also monetarily not worth it! you would be throwing bags of money at a mediocre project!
My opinion
