Finally some DM progress
Freightrain replied to mowerman's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Ya, those turbo Regals were quick for their day. The Grand National was top, then there were a few other variants(Regal T type) that weren't as flashy as a GN but same motor. That 3.8 was a weird one. The crank journals were all offset(rods didn't share a journal). Wondered how that thing stayed together with power they made. Mom had a 76 Century with 3.8 and it was a dead slug. Gutless beyond any belief. It would run 65 on the highway but if you leaned into it and it downshifted, it started slowing down and made a whole lot of fan noise. How they turned them around in 20 yrs. My 390 makes near 700 HP with 7# of boost. It will be a handful to drive if you don't pay attention. -

With the crab cap you can still get the cap off with the blower on it. The spacer under the blower gives a bit of room. You can buy an offset distributor for $1k but this way works just fine. -
Finally some DM progress

Crack the whip Paul!!! 😆 I'm working on getting the motor back in my hot rod. Been a year and a half and trying to locate bolts and pieces that have been packed away. Plus all the changes I need to make to fuel system. It is taking way too long and my motivation is lacking. I have trans all hooked up, driveshaft, shifter. Now onto the new headers and hook exhaust up. Different headers so nothing will just bolt up. Then get blower stuck back on...... Radiator back in and maybe fire it up. Hijack!! Sorry, back to regularly scheduled program..... -
Time to fix up the R600
Freightrain replied to 66dc75's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
A short wheelbase doesn't get much help with air ride. When I lengthened mine 5 ft, it really took the short, bucky ride out of it. With no trailer, mine still rides rough with no weight over the rear. -
Lol....sorry, no Linda Vaughn around me.
-
She had air ride..... 😲

Ya, Google ads is taking half of my screen ?? Pita. Have to chase the "x" to close it up every time you change pages. What happened? I just get random shit, nothing special.

I have two of those shiftera under the bench. Ran them for year with 4 spds. Same basic shifter for the Nash 5 spd I used to run. Reverse was back from 5th gear so no extra handle needed like in a 4 spd.
-
Those 600s didn't have any issues. It has 650 DP on it now and they have the tapered floats meant for round round racing. No problems.
-
Nothing wrong with that and a Lenco is very forgiving on the street. Plus the cool shifter look inside. I plan on doing a drag and drive this fall with the wagon. Will take some finesse to street drive it but I am competent it won't be a problem. It I will not stay in gear on decel, except 5th and it is mainly back roads traveling. No highway. Like Bandit said.."I can drive any forkin thing". If things don't work out, I will take my black car or lil blue truck. Hell, thought about running the Mack if I had to. 😂. I'm running in a stick shift class.

I put three 1/2 hr videos on YouTube

Considering that they are just 3 planetarys hooked together? I would assume they would have more losses then a gear transmission. There is no converter slip, but still has a pump in each, etc. My opinion, they are for 1000+ HP cars. We have a few running with our stick group. To each their own. I'm sure you can pick them up cheaper then a Liberty? Mine was $9500 brand new. But it is the most bad ass transmission you can buy(My .02).
-
Lencos are okay, but for a light, lower power car they rob too much power. Btw, I know the Willy's, he's local to me. SLER racing is four friends, using first letter of last name for SLER. Stump, ?, Ellison, Rodenhaven. The "L" has the Willy's. If CRS was so bad these days I would remember his name. Been racing with them for 20+ yrs. If you look at their channel from last fall, I was running Scott Stump's Comet. Scott has been loosing his eyesight and is legally blind now. He wants me to run his comet. 272ci (300 six), Doug Nash. I got it going hi 10, and still more in it. I'm 100# lighter, he only got lo 11 from it.

Joe, The car is powered by a 496ci 427 FE, aftermarket block, Trick Flow alum heads, Weiand Cleveland Tunnel ram on a newly repopped adapter that makes Cleveland intakes fit an FE. Has a Liberty Equalizer 5 spd(same trans Pro Stock runs today) A 9" rear with 4.56 gears and 35 spline axles. Mickey Thompson 29.5x10.5 stiff sidewall slicks. Best 10.16@130 mph. 1.34 60ft. I started running it in 1995, with just a 428CJ, tunnel wedge 2x4, toploader and it went 13.0s. That same combo is now back in my 69F100 as it started as my first hot rod.

Don't know the name or car. Badass looking for sure. Three pedals makes any car badass though!

My three part video shows how a single CS transmission is assembled. Bushings are splined onto main shaft, then the gears are bushed and ride on that.
-
20-30# less rotating mass(one less CS) will more then likely make it quicker to shift.
-
I've seen that 20+ yrs ago at local track. Likely a newer version driven by Bill.
-
I'mI had to go look at my 5 spd. Yes, the CS's are 120* apart making them equal load carrying. I didn't think it was. Though mine is only 2, the top drivers is missing. My Liberty race transmission is a twin CS and it is also timed. It's like jewelry and I love to just stare at it! The most badass racing transmission made. It allows this to happen...

I have the ratios. 8.59, 4.99, 2.83, 1.66, 1, R 8.13
-
Those are 1076, 1078 which can't be right. Mine is just a 107. They must have lo split because you would never start out with only a 5.xx ratio first?? Geoff, I don't think physical placement is that critical, as the countershafts are being pushed away, so I don't think there is uneven forces on anything. As long as the countershafts don't deflect, it all accepts a load. In a single countershaft, they both try to deflect, which is the cause of a failure. Putting the main shaft in the center of all three would keep it centered and as typical if the CS's don't deflect they will fine. Macks are in a Y shape, but the two on the side are level with main shaft as it would make the case even larger if not. Eaton or such likely just makes them 180* for ease of assembly or just physical transmission shape?
-
Google is lost, can't find anything listing the actual ratios of this box. It brought me back here but it lists everything but the old 5 spd. This is all research for my 300+ project this winter. I'm also curious why this is just a twin countershaft and not a Triple? Granted it was a reman and wonder if they removed one? Thanks.

Maybe a truck pull front weight box??? You know, with the rollers on it????🤔
-
I seem to need to make some adjustments as my front tires don't seem to be wearing out like they used to..... Muncie Dragway this past weekend.

I'd Go Out of My Way to Avoid These "Celebrities"
Freightrain replied to Joseph Cummings's topic in Odds and Ends
I lost three close people in my life to alcoholism, so I have no real taste for it. Never could do strong stuff, I could hold a beer in my hand when I was in college and going out to bars was cool. I remember being at a girls party back in mid 90s, and they kept pushing more beer towards me. I learned if I just filled my empty with water it was "always full" and they would leave me alone. 😉
