Moping Around

I talked to Old Bill, the Diesel Gypsy, this morning on Skype so I feel a little better about not being in Winchester. The case of beer I bought didn't hurt either. Then I went over to Altavista to mail him the last "Ice Road Truckers" tape-I put the " Trick My Truck" B-model episode on it too. Also had a few extra copies of "Wheels of Time" and ''Old Time Trucks" to send, and it cost $14 and some change to mail it. And that was the cheapest way to mail it. The faster 'express mail' was 40-some do

...or Not

My load to Richmond was a Bobcat and attachments-a set of forks,an auger and trencher, like on a ditch witch-some straw,a machine that looked like an overgrown tiller, and 6 big holly trees.Yeah,it was a landscaping job.Right in a residential area with narrow streets, and a tri-axle lowboy.Had to detatch and unload everything right in the street.Fortunately there wasn't a lot of traffic moving in the area-got there about 10am.Caught hell getting turned around and out of there though. But it was a go

But Not For Long

Nothing today ... gotta be at the shop in the morning to take some kind of machine to Richmond on the lowboy. Don't know what it is.Then maybe i'll get a good load going out somewhere else. Not that this is not a good load, but I need another load to make a good week. Might end up putting my good camera in the truck and try to get back through Winchester on the way in,or I might not be able make the trip. I'll figure out something,i'd hate to let my truck show picture fans down-both of them would

Rollin' Again

Went down to Webb,AL. Sunday.Pretty good ways, over 600 miles, but at least it's cooled off a little around here. Got unloaded Monday morning and went over to Tifton,Ga. to get another load of steel going to Knoxville. Unloaded there yesterday morning then went to Roanoke to pick up some truck ( or in this case school bus ) frame rails at the place I usually deliver coils to,and delivered them in Rustburg,Va. yesterday evening. Left the truck at Glenn Trent's truck stop-the old south Lynchburg tru

Rain!

It's raining,it's raining! You might not be as excited as I am,but it's the first rain we've had around here in months! I haven't cut the grass since June, and none of the turnips I sowed came up because it's been so dry. It's just a light rain, but it has been coming down over an hour now. Every little bit helps I guess!

Loaded

Finally! Got a load going to Webb,Al,near Dothan. Somebody brought the load to the shop, and it's already loaded on my trailer. All i've got to do is chain it down and go. Maybe i'll be able to afford gas to get to Winchester next weekend after all,but it's too early to tell.

Still Slow

not much freight to be moved this week either.Unloaded in Emporia Monday, went to Petersburg and loaded A load of beams for Chattanooga,Tn. and had to deadhead to Birmingham to reload.Got a load of 55' beams going to South Plainfield,N.J. but we unloaded them at the shop today because they didn't want them in N.J. yet. That's OK with me,I don't like going to New Jersey anyway.

A Different World

The year before last I went to the ATHS show in Winchester for the first time. I saw A book there on Saturday called " 100 Years of Semi Trucks",but I didn't buy it.I kept thinking about it and decided I was going to buy it the next day,but ended up going on A side trip to Altoona,Pa. and never got back to the truck show. I ended up ordering the same book from Amazon.com,and I don't remember the price but it was money well spent.I had it out today looking through it,and this one paragraph on pag

On Sale

I take A lot of truck pictures on the road, and truck show pictures when I can get to A show. For years I used an old Kodak 35mm,and it took good pictures. Then I bought A Nikon 35mm from A guy near Monroeville,Oh. for $40 and it took good pictures too,but everybody said "you need to go digital, you're way behind the times". So I did,and I'm glad because it's so easy to put the pictures right on the computer, crop them,e-mail them,or whatever you want to do. I bought A Kodak digital camera from Wal-M

Friendly Truckin' People

I spoke with Shirley Sponholtz on the phone recently, and she is A very nice person. You might be thinking,"so...who the heck is Shirley Sponholtz?" Well, she's the editor of "Old Time Trucks" magazine. I called to order some back issues my mixer was in,and she answered the phone! And she talked to me like A regular person,so I guess she's A regular person. When the back issues came, they were the wrong issue, but I just kept them and re-ordered the issues I wanted by mail.Yes,I paid for them!.They s

Jeff's Jokes

After the funeral Tuesday I mentioned to Jeff that it was the longest funeral I'd ever been to.He said "yeah,if I go before you do,try to keep mine down to about 30 minutes, and one song-'roll on big mama'-something everybody'll like". He's very funny.Only made one round this week,it was very slow.I went to Donora,Pa. with 6 pallets of kyanite-half A load, usual load is 13 pallets, little over 46,000 lbs.Made up for it coming back though, loaded 3 coils at Beech Bottom,W.V. going to Emporia,Va. to u

Evelyn Moore,5/6/23-9/2/07

Saw in the paper this morning that Mrs. Moore passed away Sunday. She was the wife of H.H.Moore,mother of F.L.Moore,and Jeff and Todd's grandmother.I work for them now at F.L.Moore and sons, but I drove for H.H.for more than 25 years, started there in1979. H.H. and Evelyn started H.H.Moore trucking co. in 1946.I'll be here until tomorrow now,so I can go to the funeral.

Doves

OK,Iknow this isn't the recipe corner, but today I cooked some doves on the grill- Jobyna's son Billy, who lives in Glouchester,Va,had to work in the area this weekend and is spending the weekend with us.His coworker went dove hunting and he brought 16 doves home this evening.I used to go dove hunting when I was A teenager, and I don't think I had 16 total kills in my dove hunting career. My mom used to cook them, but I didn't really remember how.So I put them in some wreynolds wrap with some olive

Ribs

I cooked some ribs yesterday, and I know this isn't the recipe corner, but they were so good I thought I'd share. I saw A recipe in A magazine once, two rappers had A rib cooking contest, and I kind of modified the winning recipe.First I slice the ribs into serving size pieces, then boil the ribs in beer with A little garlic, black pepper, and some of my homemade barbecue sauce, which is mostly just vinegar, red pepper, and liquid smoke. Then after they've simmered 'til they're done I put them on the char

Week's Recap

New battery,I should have said, not batteries. They only replaced the one that was bad,so now I've got one new and three old ones.Should have replaced them all in my opinion with winter coming. But I did get 8 new drive tires too. They put Generals on it-had Michelins before-and boy did they feel funny at first.Went to Dillwyn to load and thought I'd hit A patch of black ice in the first curve, but it was 85 degrees. Went to Fremont then Macedonia to Roanoke and thought I might be done for the week,

Started

Don't worry guys-I know everybody was loading their jumper cables to come over and get me started this morning, but it fired right up.Now I gotta go to Lynchburg and unload then to the shop for fuel and some new batteries, then to Dillwyn to load Kyanite going to Fremont,Oh. So I'm off like A herd of turtles as Bill would say.

Monday On Sunday

Paul's Monday sounds better than mine, but I had mine on Sunday this week.Started out looking like it was gonna be one of those days.I couldn't get the computer to come on because it wouldn't take the password. Not an AOL or website password, but the HP password to start it in the first place.I'd type it,but nothing would happen.Tried restarting 2 or 3 times, same thing. Finally I just shut it off completely and turned it back on and it worked. As I think I once heard somebody say here "stupid compute

Guilty

I've sat around here all day and haven't done anything but pick the tomatoes and go to the mailbox. And wrote some checks to pay some bills-phone,electric,credit card, etc. I know I should relax and try to enjoy A day off,but I can't help feeling A little guilty for doing nothing.Tomorrow I'll probably feel like doing nothing, and I have to go back to work. A truck drivers life I guess.

Home Once Again

I made those two turns and I'm loaded for Sunday.Went to Zelienople,Pa. Monday then over to Macedonia,Oh. to reload coils for Roanoke,Va.Then I went to Orville,Oh. and over to Macedonia to load coils to Roanoke,Va,where they make truck frames out of them.Even Mack truck frame rails are made there.Usually I'll have three coils, and I put seven chains on them because they are so tall and narrow-about 6 feet high, and 14" wide.I always horse shoe 2 chains, then criss cross 2,plus throw a chain across

Monday Morning

Well,as happens every week it's Monday morning again and back to the old grind.Got to go to the bank, drug store, and post office, then to Lynchburg to unload the load of coils I dropped Saturday morning. Then it's off to parts unknown.I'll make two turns this week, and next weekend I'll have to leave on Sunday. I hate it but my out-go has been exceding my income lately,so I must be off!

Day Off

Got home yesterday after our safety meeting and went to the garden and pulled up what was left of my cabbage,(saved what I could),squash, watermelons, and A row of snaps. Then I ran the tiller over it and sowed turnips, mustard, and spinach mustard, and sprinkled it with the hose. It's so dry everything I pulled up had done all it's gonna do,so maybe I'll have a turnip and some greens if it ever rains. Then I went to the store and bought A case-the Ice Road Truckers marathon comes on at 1:00,and the Mi
