More Front Axle Progress

Been a little quiet in the truck shop recently. But, for a good reason - I've been pretty busy putting together new work projects for our building business. It sure does feel a whole lot better now than it did six weeks ago. Anyway, I'm still working on my B-67 front axle. Gathering up the original B Mack parts is getting harder every day. But I've had pretty good success, and a lot of good help with finding the pieces I need. It will have new king pins and bushings, tie-rod end kits, n

So-so Week

I left here Monday and had to go to Petersburg to load a Roxana, Il. load. That makes a long day. It's about 100 miles east to Petersburg. I didn't get to Roxana until about 3 o'clock Tuesday evening, and didn't get unloaded until Wednesday morning. At least I got a return load out of Granite City, only a few miles from Roxana. Bad part was it was going to Baltimore, scheduled for Friday morning delivery. Then I had a load to pick up in Sparrows Point, about 2 miles from where I unloaded. Good l

Late Winter Optimism

So - It's the end of February. Mud season has issued a warning to us that it's not too far away. The snow comes overnite and melts to mud during the day. But it feels good. The sun looks different and the light is better somehow. Spring is close. It's lighter earlier and later in the day. Everybody just plain feels better. And our building business has gotten a couple of shots in the arm. Work looks OK for the spring. Still a long way to go to get out of the woods, but I'm pretty optimisti

Big Jim In Gator Country

Made my 2 stop deliveries in Oberlin and Vermilion, Oh. then went to Brookfield again and back to Roanoke. Delivered there late Friday night and got to the south Lynchburg truckstop about 2:30 am. Saturday. It's snowing pretty hard here now. Calling for 4 to 6" . Nice to be home on Sunday for a change, especially with the snow coming down-cooking some wings, got beer in the fridge, the race is coming on TV...nice...UNTIL THE POWER WENT OUT! I didn't take any pictures this week but Big Jim

Off Again

Got home last night, but now i've got to leave again. After I left Roxana Monday I picked up in Calvert City, Ky. going to Neville Island, Pa. then I went to Brookfield, Oh. and loaded for Roanoke. Unloaded yesterday and reloaded treated lumber at the shop. It's a two stop load going to Vermillion and someplace else in Ohio. Both are near Cleveland. I was running short on hours yesterday, so i'll be leaving today...shortly. This is the entrance to the old tunnel on the West Virginia turnpike.

New Project B42 Diesel Conversion

I am a new member, and wanted to share my new project with other Mack fans. This is my 1962 B42 that was originally sold as a gas single axle dump truck, and was later, (about 1975) converted to a END673 by a local mack dealer. I need a little help with the front axle, as i would like to change it over to power steering and budd wheels. I am not sure if it can be done, or what i need to do it. I also have a turbo from a n E6 that I would like to install if possible. This truck runs and drives

2009 One Tough Year For Trucking

HELLO ALL' Well I heard once that TRUCK'N AIN'T FOR SISSIES. Well I'm hear to tell yah that, that is the GOD'S honest truth. So for this month I've only had 2 loads worth the fuel to pickup and deliver. Everything else I've been offered would have put me outside our frieght lanes and I'd have sat at atruck stop and spent money. That sucks....I realy was beginning to worry. My main customer didn't get paid for awhile by their customers so we didn't get paid. Now for the good news

Catching Up More...

Slacking off a little on the old blog here. Except for sitting for 10 hours Monday waiting to get unloaded in Roxana, Il. I had a pretty good week. I was supposed to pick up a load in Jackson, Tn. and deliver it in Pounding Mill, Va. at 12:30 Tuesday, but it took so long to get unloaded there was no way I could make it. Earliest appointment I could get Wednesday was for 1:30, so then I had time to kill. I could have gotten there about 5:30 or 6:00 Monday, but I stopped at the Davy Crocket trucks

Mid-winter

Not much to report in on. I've been tracking down all of the little parts for my B-67 front brakes and tie-rod ends. Think I have everything except the little brake shoe retainer springs. Going to have to find a spring vendor and match them up. I did find an old fashioned clutch and brake shoe re-lining business in Rochester. And they think they have a Mack 673 clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, throw-out and pilot bearing assembly all re-lined, resurfaced and ready to install stored upst

Still Trucking Around

Guess I should catch up a little. I went to Chesapeake Monday and came back up to Petersburg and loaded another load for Roxana,Il. Delivered there Tuesday evening and loaded in Pittsboro, In. Wednesday morning for Petersburg, Va. Hit snow in Charleston, W.V. coming back, but the turnpike was pretty clear. When I got off on 64 east at Beckley it was a different story. Completely covered. I waited on top of Sandstone mountain for a couple of hours, hoping the snow would stop...and a plow truck wo

2004 Vision Turbo Troubles

Have two 04 visions that I am told have turbo issues. One is the turbo speed sensor keeps cutting the boost pressure. We have tried two new sensors and still have the same problem. One mechanic mentioned maybe the turbo shaft is "floating" and the sensor is loosing the signal. Is this possible? The other one has air system troubles. The dryer is blowing off every 20 seconds, this doesn't happen constantly, but will be fine for half a day then start doing it again. We changed the compressor, dry

A Routine Ice Road Trip To Pa. And Ohio-with Photos

I delivered the load from Texas to Milton, Pa. Tuesday, then rode over to Brookfield, Oh. and got a load of coils and went to Roanoke. I thought I was going to Chester, W.V. with a curtain side, or Conestoga, or whatever you call it Thursday (they won't unload a flat bed in winter, and we didn't know if we could get a return load for a van), but they got a Fremont, Oh. load so I took that instead. Ran in lots of snow (again!) all the way (well, all right, most of the way!) up and back. Had to go

Catchin' Up

Gee...where to begin? Haven't posted a blog since Dec. 22nd. Lot's been going on since then, good and bad and in between, but i've forgotten most of it. The bad news is that my nephew Bo Scruggs was one of the victims of the sorry bastard who shot and killed 8 people in Appomattox recently. 8 good people, for no apparent reason, or reasons known only to him. Then Bo's dad Ronnie had a heart attack and is now recovering at home from 5-way heart bypass surgery, so he'll be out of work for a while.

New Toy For Jimmy

Took a little ride to Central Ohio last Thursday for purposes of picking up my Uncle Jimmy's new Kenworth W-900-A. It's a very well maintained 1980 model with a Caterpillar 3408 and 6+4 transmissions. It has a custom built air to air intercooler fit for a little added oomph. Pretty smooth ride. Kind of like the big truck equivalent of a Harley Davidson Electra-Glide. Nice Toy! Just sort of oozes down the road. And he looks just right sitting up there too - Big guy with bright white

My Great Northwestern Adventure

I delivered that load in Roxana Monday, and boy did I get a surprise! Neal told me when I called in empty to go to Blytheville, Arkansas to pick up a load going to- he said "I can't pronouce it, but it's p-u-y-a-l-l-u-p". I said "well what state is that in?" He hesitated a few seconds and said "Washington". So I said "yeah, right-where am I going?" He said "you wanna talk to your boss-man?" I said "yeah...it's probably in Kentucky somewhere". Then Jeff got on the phone and I asked him if I was g

Front Axle Progress

The new kingpins are finally installed and the bushings reamed to size on the B-67. It's the 1st time I've ever actually seen it done. And, I think we got a really good result. A long-time friend of mine has a tremendous amount of experience with heavy front axles, and he sure did make it look easy. I replaced all four of the bearings and races (cones), after finding that three of the four had problems. The backing plates and brake shoes are all painted and ready to be remounted, and

Missing Dog

So - people are starting to talk, and it isn't all good. They want to know why, at the time of the new President's inauguration, did Other Dog go missing? Speculation is rampant. Are they body doubles? Is he Secret Service? Or, have they finally caught him and locked him up? Did he hurt himself working with that hammer? What's Up? Does anybody know?

Gold Parts

So, I finally got my kingpins and all the front axle bits and pieces for rebuilding. Took a couple of weeks before the local Mack dealer was able to locate what I needed. After seeing the bill, I understand. Gold kingpins and platinum bearings are very hard to find. Wow!! The front axle parts were almost as much as I paid for the entire truck. And about double the cost of the parts for the rear axle, which was rebuilt from hub to hub. If I ever sell this B-67, it will be without the fro

Ice Road Trucker?

Things must be slow around here, this is the third week in a row that I only made one turn. I went to Fremont, Oh. Monday and had to layover a night before I got a load back. Ended up loading 9 skidded coils in Hubbard, Oh. going to Orange, Va. After I unloaded in Orange yesterday I went to Petersburg and loaded for Roxana, Il. to deliver Monday. Loaded with H piling, going to a refinery. The rules they sent said drivers must be clean shaven, I guess in case you have to put a gas max on. I took
