24 volt alternator wireing on 85 magnum

Recommended Posts

Haveing trouble with the 24 volt box on back of the alternator catching on fire Where the stator wire goes into the box. Would anybody happen to have a wireing diagram that would show where the battery cables, and the wires from the alternator go, or have any ideas what would cause this.

unless your trying to keep it "as built" it is advantageous as far as I'm concerned to change over to 12v. I did mine last year had to add a battery cable change a volt meter and change the starter then remove the transformer box from the alt. if you have a dealer close there is a master elect. diagram that shows both 12-24 systems together and its pretty easy to change over ...oh and there is a small wire to remove from a circuit breaker on the fire wall.

Pretty sure you got the same setup as my '89 E9. That box is a transformer which takes 12 volts from the alternator and turns it into 24 volts to charge the two batteries that are used during start up. After buying four transformers ($300 a pop!) over the first 15 years of owning my truck, I had to do something.!! My fix was to install a second alternator. A Delco 24 volt, single wire, self-energizing model was used. I fabricated brackets for the install. 10 years of trouble free service so far. I will post pics for you tomorrow.

Here are a few pics of my permanent solution to transformer failure. This is easily done and can be returned to "factory built" with very little effort. I used grade 8 studs to replace the air compressor cyl head bolts to mount the bracket. Put a double pulley on the main 12V alternator to drive the self-energizing 24V auxiliary alternator. The 24V wire from the transformer is connected to the aux alternator.......Transformer trouble GOODBYE...!!
