Ring gear ratio

Recommended Posts

When replacing a ring gear and pinion, the carriers are stamped from the factory with the ratio size. But, what happens when someone changes that and doesnt restamp the carrier. You might have installed the wrong ratio. Here is the formula to check your ratio before buying the wrong part.

1, count the teeth on the ring gear.

2. count the teeth on the pinion

3. divide the pinion into the ring gear.

4. next count the teeth on the bull gear

5. also count the teeth on the helical cross.

6. divide the helical cross into the bullgear

EXAMPLE: ASSUME THE CARRIER IS STAMPED 3.65

Ring gear 17 teeth

pinion gear 16 teeth

17 divided by 16=1.0625

Bull gear 55 teeth

helical cross 16 teeth

55 divided by 16=3.4375

Now multiply 3.4375 by 1.0625=3.65234375 or 3.65 ratio

Very informative and thanks.

Just the easy thing - mathematic.

There is another way - to lift one wheel and turn it full ower counting revolutions of a pinion.

Next divide the number into 2 because the only 1 wheel turns and the other one stay in position - diff multiplys by 2.

To have better result - make 10 revs. of a wheel and divide the number of pinion circles into 10 and 2.
