  1. Yall may enjoy this story bout bugs, a couple of months ago I was cleaning out a dairy lagoon, went to work one morning, owner of dairy, a dutchman, said he had to go to emergency room the night before. He was on his tractor, after dark with lights on. It has a cab, but no windows. Anyway, a june bug flew into his ear, and immediately went to digging down in his ear. He couldnt get it out, said the pain was so excrutiating he had to get his brother to take him to the emergency room. The first hospital couldnt get it out, and sent him to another one. They worked with it a while, finally took the bug out in pieces. Ha,,He said when he got to the first hospital, he was really in pain, they messed with it a lil bit and said they didnt know what to do, he told them "Hell,,just kill the son of a bitch,,I need some relief from the digging!" Anyhow,,he said the procedure at second hospital cost him $1400.00. He wasnt too happy bout that either. I dont want any june bugs in my ear.,,randy

guess it puts meaning to the term "Let me put a bug in your ear" randy

  2. That's incorrect.

On initial fill, you fill the upper & lower compartments (and the power divider on the front diff), thereafter for routine maintenance you just check the bottom compartment and keep it full to the filler hole.

If you keep checking & adding oil to the upper compartment each time, it will result in the bottom compartment becoming overfull, and you'll be draining the excess out each time, which makes absolutely no sense, unless you like wasting gear lube.

Thanks HK, I filled power divider on front diff, filled upper compartment, then lower compartment, so only one i keep full now is lower diff? The power divider didnt hold much, it has a drain and not much came out of it either. I think I got and idea on how it all works now,,,appreciate info,,have a good day,,randy

  3. Mark I can relate. I have this phobia with crawling things especially in bed with me that was not introduced properly. Early last week while sleeping I felt something crawl on my neck and I vaguely remember fighting with it. The next morning I got up when the alarm went off and looked near my pillow and lo and behold I found a spider in which I had killed. I have a sticky pad for buggs etc. but some how they don't all get trapped. That could have been a brown recluse far as I could tell. I didn't try and turn him over to see if he had a fiddle or mandelin. What ever it is leave me be while i'm sleeping, I need all tha beauty rest I can get.

  5. Mark, Randy

Yaw going to make me start crying in a minute. I'm feeling everday now like i'm in a foreign country and lost and no where to go. My dad and his dad was that kind of persons. They could take crap and make something good from it. It was fun to grow up handing them tools and moving outa tha way trying to learn something. Ok i'm through rambling.

    mike

Mike,,I think thats whats making me dwell on those days, my dad was the same way, we worked together for several years. Hes been gone 15 years now. I can tear something up or breakdown and when im working on it, i keep looking around, waiting for his advice. My uncle worked with us and he was the same way, 2 very gifted, talented people. they are both gone now and really miss their advice and skills. Now, im through rambling. randy

  6. My member title is also updated now!

Oh great overlord of pancake syrup, oh master of masters, enlighten me of the differences of the sweet bourgelis syrups of the lourdes district of southern france to the bitter tartness of the pescalino syrups of western spain, master, i am but a lowly grasshopper and long for the great knowledge of the syrups,,,,randy

  7. Yeah buddy! know what you mean! my brother-inlaw was over there too,he said the same thing! he was more worried about those giant spiders then the iraquis! he said the boys in his unit were using them for target practice/sighting in rifles! but i'm glad i got looked at as quick as i did,my wife said it could have been a lot worse, left un-treated, never had anything like this happen before! like i told otherdog, guess i'm gonna hafta' start packing my pistol when i'm working in the trailer from now on!! LOL!........Mark

heh heh,,,only difference will be you will be going to ER with gunshot wound to foot instead of spider bite,,LMAO,,randy

  8. Thats what they told me as well,i'm in a trailer load of furniture just about everyday! doctor said the area where i was bitten may never heal completely, may even require a skin graft at some point! not much fun thats for sure!........Mark

Yeah Mark, I would stay on top of that. I know a couple of people here who are missing a lil meat from those bad lil critters. It is fotunate that it was diagnosed so quickly. The first letter I got from my son when he was in Iraq, during the opening stages of the war, He wrote, "Im not worried that much about the Iraquis, I cant seem to keep my focus on them for worrying bout these dam Camel spiders." Before he left, he visited here and brought info he was supposed to study up on and it had a lot of info on local wildlife and stuff and the camel spider really impressed him. He was tremendously afraid of spiders as a child. It did sound like a badass spider too. I told my wife we are so worried bout him, and hell, hes afraid of spiders over there! If he sees one, he will probably empty the clip on it,,,heh heh,,,,randy

  9. Mechanic vs technician is really related to the engine type. Mechanical engines were a straight forward machine. Listening to it, many "good' mechanics could diagnose the problem. And a couple things here and there to check and replace the proper part.

Now, with computerized units, the computer "should" diagnose the problem. BUT, to get the proper replacement. Many of you gentlemen here have told that the engine computer has to be re-flashed because a part was changed.

A $2.00 part was changed but the re-flash cost, what $300 or more.

But what do I know, I just stab it and steer it

All heve excellent, good, true valid points. Why cant politicians see things as clearly as we do on here? randy

  10. There is no seal to keep the oils apart. The oil level in the upper is maintained at the level of the cross shaft bearing, which is the same level as the fill plug. As counter intuitive as it seems, if you have a leaking pinion seal, the oil level in the lower compartment goes down since the oil in the upper is replaced by oil from the lower. The oil level in the power divider is also maintained at the level of the bearing. Many of the side covers for the front differential even have a sloping shelf that catches oil as it is flung around by the gears, and drains into the front bearing to provide some circulation.

Thanks Kelly, sounds reasonable to me, appreciate info,,,randy

  11. This is a good subject! i know there have been many advances in technology regarding cars and trucks over the last century, but i long for the days when people who worked on cars and trucks for a living were mechanics, not "technicians" and would actually try and diagnose a mechanical problem before starting to throw parts and money at it! my maternal grandfather was one of these guys,he could barely read or write, but could machine,repair,weld,build,re-build damn near ANYTHING that was put in front of him! if a job or part was not to his liking,he would re-build or re-do the part to his satisfaction, before making out his "bill" he repaired a cracked block on an old 8-N ford tractor we had on the farm 46 years ago,and i know for a fact its still running, and still used almost daily! just kinda' bothers me that no one seems to take this kind of pride in their work anymore, seems to be a "let somebody else worry about it now" not my job type world............Mark

Yeah, your right Mark, and we are running out of those kind of people. I really miss those days a lot. randy

  12. I remember the old parts book. It just burns me up now to go to a parts store for a generic type item like a wheel stud or headlight and they want to know the make and model of the vehicle so they can look it up. Advance Auto Parts is the worst. I stopped at the one in Dillwyn one time to get a low beam headlight for the truck- a 2A1 I think it is, you can get them anywhere and they're all the same. First thing the guy wanted to know was the make and model of the vehicle. I didn't figure they listed Peterbilt parts anyway so I said "i'm building a spaceship in the backyard and I want to put headlights on it". He just stood there looking stupid and speechless. Then I started to leave and the woman in there went and got one off the shelf and put it on the counter. I paid for it and as I was leaving she said "good luck with your spaceship".

LOL,,I think we may have the same attitude, OD,,,I like that story! randy

  13. If you are dealing with split rims I would chain them incase they decide to come apart, if you dont have split rims not an issue. I have had tractor tires that you could not break the bead with out a machine, and others that break down and come apart real easy. Dont know until you try.

Safety,,safety,,,safety,,cant stress that enough! I never was very talented with tires, watch people that do it every day and they dont have much trouble. I guess its just something takes practice. I really dont mind paying to have it done, too much huffing and puffing and straining in it for me, lot of room for injuries too, back, toes, eyes,,etc. Just be careful,,,,randy

  14. It took me a while to find it, but the additive is called Bulldog® Power Divider Top Treat, The Mack part number is 9853-PDT1. According to Mack this additive is designed to prevent power divider snapping or binding. If power divider snapping or binding is experienced, this additive should be added at each rear axle gear oil change. One container (20 fl.oz.) is required for each carrier. I can't speak to it effectiveness, as I have never had the opportunity to use it, wouldn't think it would hurt anything though.

Okay thanks FW and rhasler. I saw the drain for the top housing, it looks like its gonna be kinda a booger to get to also. I have drained power divider before, have never drained the bottom though. I am going to wait and run by mack place tommorrow and check on that additive you mentioned. appreciate the help fellows,,,randy

  15. Y'all pulling the axles too?

It's recommended that you put truck at an angle to fill valleys in axle housing. Leave it bout an hour each side. Then recheck level.post-4436-000673900 1282264502_thumb.jpg

no, not pulling axles or anything, just oil change. just a drain and refill and clean magnet plugs,,,thanks,,randy

  16. Please correct me ifn im wrong, but gonna do a complete oil change on rear tandem on 86 R-688ST dump truck tommorrow. I will need to drain and refill power divider on front, then drain side carrier bearing and refill on front, then drain bottom pot and refill it from rear plug in center of axle housing? and on the rear tandem, just carrier housing and refill then bottom and refill? Does this all sound correct? And if I was to only drain bottom, then would only need to refill from center plug on axle housing? Hate to sound long winded, but trying to get a mental picture of how all that works. Does oil in power divider do a lil swapping around with oil in bottom when your running? I will drain all at one time, and then go to refilling each one. I have changed power divider oil before, so I know it doesnt take much for it, but it has to have that initial fill. Thanks fellow mackians,,,randy
