  1. Came across an RW today for sale. VIN plate was missing on the door. VIN # on the frame is 1M2V121C2C4001201 best I could tell. There was a lot of paint on the frame and I didn't want to take my knife out and rake the paint off with the owner standing there. Owner says the truck is a 1982 but doesn't know the model. Going by just the VIN can anyone give me any further info on this unit?
  2. Thanks for the comments about my old Superdog.

  3. I took some chains just in case but luckily I didn't have to use them. There was still a lot of snow on top of Togwotee Pass and over on the Sisters.
  4. Well you know I would rather push a Mack than drive a Peterbilt!!!
  5. Just got back from Coos Bay, OR. I've been to Canada and the west coast now, have I achieved Supertrucker status yet?
  6. Welcome to the party. I would like to see your tri drive Superliner (even if it does have KW parts).
  7. I think the last CL with an E9 is in Hagerstown at the powertrain plant. It is equipped with V-MAC technology and everthing about it is computer controlled. Many people have tried to buy it but as far as I know it's still there. I have been told that the E9 was going to make a come back in 2003, it was beating the six bangers in fuel economy on the test stands and conforming to all the EPA standards but the Volvo purchase took place in 2002 and the E9 program was canned to make way for the MP-10/D-16 engine. I have 2 E9's running right now. One in a 1987 Superliner with a E9-400 that's never been pumped up, and the other in a 1990 Superliner with an E9-500 that's pushing 600-650 hp. Every truck driver I have ever talked to has a V8 Mack story. They either tell you about one they drove and how well they liked it or how one blew their doors off. If you ever drove one that was right you don't want anything else. I am currently doing an inframe overhaul on mine which is the 1990 Superliner. Parts are getting very expensive but no more than any other comperable engine. I'm going to have between 6k and 7k in this overhaul not counting labor. My friend with a C15 550 CAT just spent more than that overhauling his engine. I have 2 spare E9 engines and I think while parts are still available I'm going to start building another one for the next go round cause I don't want nothin else.
  8. I just hope Mr. Slagle takes what he learned back to board room and applies it. Mack is not only a namebrand it's an institution. It is as American as apple pie. Mack Trucks are like the trucking business itself, it's not just a job but a way of life. Macks are not just trucks they are a way of life, from the people who build them, to people who work on them, to the people who drive them. Trucking is a hard, and in todays society a sometimes less than noble profession, but we choose to do it because we enjoy it. We choose Macks for our profession because we believe in what the Mack name stands for. I hope he learned that.
  9. Thanks for the reply. I'm all to familliar with the valve seats falling out. We went through that problem with our first E9 back in the 80's. I think we're going to put some new valve seals in and keep on trucking.
  10. I'm replacing the head gaskets on the old E9 and upon inspection of the heads there is a lot of black sludge around the intake valves. Looks like it could be leaking oil from around the valve stems or unburnt diesel or a mixture of both. These heads have 500K since they were rebuilt. Is this just an E9 problem or do the 6's do this too? Should I just put new valve seals in, take them to a machine shop for another rebuild (big dollars) or just clean em up reinstall and keep going. I've had no trouble out of this engine and I sure don't want any.
  11. I'll give you guys an update on the Lucas this week. I'm fixin to pull the pan on my E9 and check the bearings and I have run 2 gallons of Lucas in it with every oil change since it was overhauled. That was 5 years and 386K ago.
  12. John Deere tractors Peterbilt trucks Caterpillar engines
  13. You said it all when you said V8 500. A person can put up with a lot of stuff when you got one of those under the hood.
  14. The first truck I ever drove was Daddy's '74 Pete 359. It had a 318 Detroit, 15 speed trans, and 4:11 gears. It was later repowered with a Silver 92 430 Detroit. He called the old truck Sneaky Pete. He used to haul lime out of Jefferson City TN back to the Carolinas and I would go with him on Saturday or when school was out. We would get on I 40 headed east at the 417mm and when he would get it high gear we would swap seats and I would drive until we started approaching the Gorge. By the time I got my license old Sneaky Pete was gone, replaced by an R model Mack. Best move we ever made!!
  15. Amen to that! Bring back the Superliner. The only cabovers I ever drove were Mack F models and MH's. A few months ago I thought I wanted a cabover to restore but after talking with my dad I came to my sences. We didn't like em then, probably wouldn't like em now. I never did like looking out the rear view mirror to make sure I was on my side of the road.
  16. Well I'm not a physics major but does it not stand to reason that cabovers are more dangerous than conventionals because there is nothing in front of you to absorb energy in a crash.
  17. I sharp paint job makes a truck, but the graphics are not my thing. I agree about the visor. The fiberglass oem visor makes those trucks just like they make an R model cab. I started to put one of those R model stainless steel visors on my Superliner years ago, but got talked out of it and I'm sure glad I did! I bought a cowcatcher instead, trying to protect my investment. I would not give those Trick My Truck guys free rien over my truck either. My truck would be built to my spec, it's got to work for me. I've seen several of those trucks in the last year or two and all were falling apart and beat all to pieces.
  18. I was surprised at how clean these trucks were, even the garbage trucks. Sharp paint, and lots of chrome. The rears of some of the Granite concrete trucks looked like they should be running in a mine somewhere not on city streets. I sure they were 50K plus, and they had the full floating axles. Why do they spec these trucks so heavy for city work?
  19. I took my wife to Manhattan this weekend for her birthday/anniversary/Christmas present. I loved the sights and sounds especially the Mack trucks working all over town. RD's and Granites with big heavy rears doing the work those brand x trucks can't handle. Got busted one time though. We were down at Ground Zero and I heard a truck with a straight pipe and I said that sounds like a Mack. Sure enough a RD rolloff came around the corner with a 6" straight pipe and she said only you would come to New York and think about trucks.
  20. This is the easiest way. Take an 22.5 Dayton rim and stand the trans on it's nose. It works perfectly. Done it many times with 2090 Mack 9 speed transmissions.

  22. I want a set of snorkles to replace my bonnets on top of my external breathers on my Superliner. I put the cowcatcher bumper on back in the summer and I think the snorkles would really look go. It will give it the Austrailian look. And of course they need to be chrome or stainless. If anyone can help with some part numbers I would greatly appreciate it.
  23. I agree. There is nothing like 100% Mack. Would you order a Chevorlet truck with a Ford motor or rearend? No of course not. But that is what your doing when you spec a Mack with other vendor components. If you want oddball components ( CAT, DETROIT, Cummins, Eaton, Meritor,) buy a Peterbilt because it has the best resale value of the BRAND X trucks, but if you want something with the best resale value on the market, you get a Mack that is 100%.
  24. I had the same trouble with my E9 even before I did a power upgrade. I went through 2 new Meritor clutches in just a few weeks. I'm running a Lipe Clutch now. If you look at the pressure plate on the Meritor/Rockwell clutch the pressure springs are loaded on an angle where as the Lipe springs are loaded straight up and down. This makes for a stronger force on the clutch discs. Lipe Clutches a distributed out of Paris Tennessee and I have the distributors business card in my truck if your interested in a Lipe. If not you can contact Kelly Osborne in Riverton Wyoming (Osborne Trucking) he is the Mack service dealer for that area and he has a part # for a Meritor clutch that they run behind their E9's. I think it's rated at 1850 on the torque. I don't know if you have ever run into this, but the center on some clutches are too small and will hit the flywheel bolts. So make sure you get one that is compatible with an E9.
  25. Where's it at in South Carolina? Where do you want it delivered and how much does it weigh? I have an rgn and would be glad to give you a quote on hauling.
