Sad day really. T3 wasn't without it's situational/operational advantages and toward the end I like what they did to improve it (even stealing Fullers clutch mesh design). It'll work out. Old school guys have enough T's to last till waaaaay past retirement and the whipper snappers, who can't shift an manual, will find their intellectual crutch in the M-Drive.

Definitely sad, I really like them. They have to be shifted correctly.

I'd just as soon we get back to Macks, but seems like politics is all anybody wants to talk abut here anymore.

Really it’s simple, just get on topics about Mack trucks. You and several others just don’t get it. Nobody making you get on these topics.

  3. Seems like a plan.

I know if it were me (I’m not saying I’m right at all), if I was going to make it 12volt, I’d hook all them together & I wouldn’t even worry about the amps going to starter. I know this is not really the same but I put a bigger amp alt. on a truck before because of winch, and it would over charge batteries because not enough draw during regular usage, & I know regulator shouldn’t allow but did.

Not common fiberglass, but rather Mack Trucks' proprietary "Maxi-Glas".

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Morning Call  /  September 18, 1985

Mack Trucks yesterday received a Governor's New Product Award for development of its Ultra-Liner truck, a lighter-weight vehicle made of fiberglass.

In ceremonies on the sun-bathed Capitol steps, and with the red, white and blue truck in front of him, Gov. Dick Thornburgh presented plaques to the Allentown-based company.

The company was praised for its innovative products that, Thornburgh said, have contributed to the expansion of the state's economic base.

The Ultra-Liner truck, designed to be rust-free, is made of a combination of fiberglass and plastic called Maxi-Glas, said Leslie A. Meacock II, director of product engineering for Mack Trucks.

Development began in 1977 for "the finest cab in the world," Meacock said.

After four years of research and development and an investment of "$20 million-plus," the first truck was completed in 1982, he said.

The Ultra-Liner, he said, weighs less than standard-design trucks, has lower operating costs and is more fuel efficient. The fiberglass cab "is more aerodynamically correct," causing the higher efficiency rating, Meacock said.

While Meacock could not give one specific figure on the percentage difference in fuel consumption, he said, "It could (provide) up to 12 percent greater efficiency than previous trucks, depending on the way it's used and the operating conditions."

Commercialization of the Ultra-Liner in 1983 required a new production line, which increased employment to 1,400 from 800. The company has sold between 7,000 and 8,000 trucks at $66,000 to $100,000 each, depending on the options and engines.

Meacock said many different commercial fleets have been sold to various companies including Ryder, Penske and United Parcel Service.

"Our market penetration this year is higher than ever," Meacock said.

This new truck replaced an older cab, but Meacock said that the firm is still producing its standard line of trucks.

He added that the company is developing new models in addition to the Ultra-Liner.

What a shame to read this, & look at what it is today

  5. Low side switch should kick compressor out when it gets too low. Never watched an evaporator while charging or working so don’t know about the ice. Along as fan blowing air and clean, don’t know.

if you have all your panels off around your evaporator while trying to charge, that’s not going to work, got to be closed up for it to read right.

I should’ve just stayed quiet, maybe someone with the right knowledge will jump in.

    Good luck

  6. Low side being low shows needs more Freon, needle jumping shows me it’s trying to take more. Evaporators freeze up for lots of things, low Freon, not enough air going through evaporator.....

why did you replace dryer & expansion valve in the first place? Did you pull vacuum. Did system have failure? Did you flush system? How much Freon have you put in it? How much does your system hold?

The high side pressure climbs to 300 and the fan kicks on and the high side immediately drops to around 150psi. Isn’t the an indication of good air flow across the condenser?

Yes, didn’t say that in original post. High side seemed high to me thinking condenser dirty. 300 still is too high for fan to just kick in, my opinion.

Another Question, On the bottom of the tranny there is an inspection plate missing with a grease zirk on a tube and some sort of shift collar in it. (Hi/Low?)

Is it common to remove that plate and leave it off?

It seems to have been gone for a while based on the grease on the flange. I am worried some tranny issue got this parked years ago.

    Thanks

Sounds like zerk for throw out bearing, don’t over grease, watch & or listen for grease. Should also be zerks on each side of trans for the shaft & fork that pulls throw out bearing. Lots of covers have been taken off, it’ll be ok for farm use

Well, ours have been "Fettled" a bit as well. We put slightly bigger injectors on them. Added blower gears with an extra tooth and bigger turbos out of 8v71s so they make a little more HP. Then we straight piped the exhaust.

Does anyone know if the top of the dipstick is supposed to be flush with the pop of the neck? I think the handle fell off ours so I am not sure if it supposed to be down more or flush. Not that overfilling a little will hurt but I do not want to be way over. Now it just kinda sits there.

Never heard of doing that either, I must have gotten old! (except the straight pipe part)

Oil level on a DD would be bout top of oil pan rail, not sure on the MACK.

No, I am thinking that as they have a rack and mechanical injectors, they seem to be set up for Delo and prefer it.

Maybe it was just me but I felt that when we ran a different oil, they were not as happy but IDK for certain. I know I love the motors

    I gotcha

they definitely need the straight weight  delo 100.  & 40w is fine especially if it’s got some wear
