Some people I know of running mack seem to mistake their ruggedness for never needing maintenance. It disgusts me to see these trucks in such poor shape. I have picked up a few of these macks over the years, and it's amazing what a $1000 dollars and a couple of days can do. The idiots that owned these trucks thought they were shot.

Most likely your spindles that the wiper arms mount on are rusty. It will act like the motor is failing.

I know of a good one with a 671 up here in ND for 1500 if your serious I could do some digging and make sure the guy still has it.

We're gonna need some pics.

Just out of curiosity why do you want to switch to hub pilots? They can be a total bitch to remove the inside dual if it has been on a long time.

http://mandersdiesel.com/featured-trucks/1977-mack-r685st.html no connection, just really interesting.

The " kriete group" in Madison Wisconsin has a 2003 vision with an insulated body on it. At least it should be pre egr.

If you don't mind replacement quality they are the same as 47-51 chevy pickups, available from classic truck parts of america.

Great point of view. It shows how some things happen for a reason, and things have a way of falling into place.

I was admiring that one on truckpaper, but it was way too far away for me.

Flywheel to crankshaft is 185ft.lbs.

I test drove one in a freightliner once, maybe it wasn't running right, but it seemed really short on power. I think they do hang together o.k.

The word "Truck" is a misnomer when applied to that yuppiefied car with a bed! Ever notice that the media always uses the word Truck when there is an accident involving a pickup!? The growing anti truck sentiment in America guarantees that when the word truck is used (especially when the pickup is at fault) the readers or listeners will pay more attention to the broadcast! Some of you who run Kentucky will remember when that drunken asshole in the Toyota pickup caused the crash that burned all those kids to death in the school bus,The state put up a memorial sign calling it a "truck bus" crash The actual truckers of America protested until they changed the sign to read "pickup bus crash" good for them!
It really pisses me off when people call pickups "trucks". I've got a brother in law that says this, every visit we have to argue about it.

Make sure the shop checks/vacuums out your intercooler for metal. I've heard of guys not doing that and it has cost them big.

Had my turbo go out at about 750000mi. A buddy of mine had the same amount of miles on his 60 series detroit, so he thought he would avoid my trouble and preemptively replace his. His replacement lasted 3 weeks!

Is the e-7 longer in length?
-
Nope, as it turns out they were 3.87's the truck was originally speced to have come with 4:17 and I swapped them back in. All the 4.42's we ever ran seemed to be indestructible.

Somebody has one for sale on Minneapolis Craigslist. I'm not sure how to post a link.
-
That sucks. I'm sure it has something to do with poor sales. Any indication of spec. changes on current models to fill the void?

Hey Tracy, there is a '47 Mack on Craigslist in Bemidgi Mn. I'm not sure how to post the link but it might have some parts you need.

If you have a good donor roof, I would cut the pillars and weld the other one on. I did this once on a 72 chevy pickup and it worked great. Just remember to measure carefully and weld in temporary supports before you do any cutting.
-
Yes, awesome story! I'm not too far out of your area and I will also keep my eyes open for parts.

I've pulled them apart and cleaned them, and put some grease on them. Of course you can buy them new but they aren't cheap.
