  1. Don't believe anything that you hear & only half what you see. I am sure that there are no trailers under the runways at Logan. No longer then it would take to recover a trailer there is no reason to leave it behind to deteriorate & create a void in/under the concrete to create a hazard for aircraft. There is no way a trailer would be allowed to be left in the fill. In Ft Wayne a new 7 story hotel was demolished before it was finished because of unsafe soil. http://www.indianasnewscenter.com/news/local/39749242.html

    Just my observation...

    T.

didn't really sound logical to me either, but that's what he said. you know how truck driver stories are-except mine, they're all true.

  2. IT"S SO EASY TO BE CRITICAL OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THE THINGS WE DO. :pat:

But it's difficult to look at ourselves and be equally critical.

I've done the same. Ah.. I'll just quickly get this done.. No need to hunt down some stand.

Nothing will happen if I strategically place the jack in the center. Stands are a waste of time.

And going to get them and place them under the truck is an even more waste of time.

Here is an opportunity to turn back time.

If you were laying in a hospital bed.... I know you would be wishing.. If I could go back

I would have taken that extra couple of minutes to go get the stands. :pat:

I'm glad to hear you got lucky Rob. Nobody got hurt.

Keep an eye on those nine yr old tire. :thumb:

I probably wouldn't be here now if not for a block of wood. I was helping some friends put a clutch in a '66 Chevelle and was underneath taking the driveshaft out. When I got it loose I pried it forward to get it out of the yoke on the rearend and when I did the car rolled forward off the jacks and dropped down onto the big wooden blocks on each side under the frame. It had been supported by the 2 jacks, and was about an inch off the wood. When it dropped that inch with me under it I realized what might have been and how quickly stuff can happen, and how stupid I had been.

  3. Live and Learn,we've all made our share of mistakes when working on trucks or heavy equipment, the main thing is no one got hurt,it's definitely worth taking the extra time to do it safely especially when messing with truck tires, tube tires are the worst, old tube type tires and old rims are disaster waiting to happen, you need to take every precaution you can including deflating the tires before loosening the first lug.

I've seen one of the mechanics where I used to work sit on tube type tires with the split rims while he inflated them. I told him "them things are gonna kill you one of these days" and he always said "I ain't worried-I do it all the time". He was lucky too. He never had any kind of accident-but it only takes once.

  4. ... Ever see a truck pulling a van trailer hung up in the ditch as it was making a corner with two drive tires completely off the ground? It'll usually have "Swift" on the side...

Hope that helps clear things up... :thumb:

I...uh...I...OK, I picked up a load of skidded coils in a van at the dreaded AK Steel in Butler, Pa. last summer. It was about 120 in the shade and of course the a-holes at AK Steel require long sleeves. After I got loaded I headed south on rt. 8 and there's a store on the right with a little dirt parking lot next door- it's just past the famous "Rob's Truck Sales/Peterbilt and Smart Car" plant. I pulled in to get a cold drink and there was a mud puddle in the parking lot, full of water. I'm assuming it's a small puddle but when the trailer tires go in I said "0h $#*! this @$%*"s deep!!". The front corner of the van went down on my drive tires and I couldn't move at all. The back of the trailer was barely off the road. I walked across the road where some guys were doing something with a forklift and asked if they would pull me out but they wouldn't drive the lift across the road. I was just about to call the Peterbilt place to get a wrecker when a truck pulled in the store lot and circled around and pulled up in front of me. He said this situation had happened before, and he didn't know why they didn't fix that hole. I got a chain and hooked it to our front tow hooks and he backed up and pulled me right out. I thanked him and offered to pay him too, but of course he wouldn't take any money.

It doesn't take a lot to get hung up sometimes. I was so pissed I didn't even get a cold drink, and have never stopped there again.

  5. Man them tomaters are looking mighty good! The best tomatoes are home grown ones especially out in Virginia! You wouldn't happen to have any corn liquor in there would ya? B)

no corn liquor, but the wine was-I mean is-delicious! Probably the last home grown tomatoes for the year, mine have been gone but they still had a few they brought in green, before the frost got 'em. They also gave me a couple packages of short ribs out of the freezer (my brother raises a few cows and had one butchered this summer). Might put some turnips in the crock pot with some of the ribs. I'm making myself hungry-better have some leftover turkey and green beans.

  6. Went to Cumberland to see Ma and them today. I got a few turnips out of Dad's turnip patch, some broccoli, tomatoes, and 3 bottles of homemade wine. He had some nice turnips too! I've never had any luck growing them-I'd buy enough turnip seeds to plant 4,000 acres and sow them in a little garden spot and usually about 7 of them would come up. Here's what I made off with today-

  7. With the way your Pete's been running you'd been done took up permanent residence in the poor house. All kidding aside at least you don't have to buy fuel and do maintenance to it. :thumb:

Ain't broke down since Monday there Rob, when the fan belt broke. Excuse me, I mean Double L.

  8. Those older engines did not have glow plugs to give them quicker heat to the cylinders for them to startup quicker so, a big tank is needed for an older engine to have enough air capacity to get it to turn over longer. I hope I made that clearer than mud. So go with a large air tank to have plenty of air reserve.

    mike

so, in other words, what we're hearing you say is- regardless of what our gf's say- size really does matter, especially when we get older. Understood.

  9. But, again- as I sit here watching this show about the Peterbilt factory in Denton, Texas on the National Geographic channel- as much trouble and down time as i've had with this Peterbilt, none of it's really been a Peterbilt issue. It's been a Caterpillar issue. I haven't taken the truck back to the dealer ever, but it's been to Carter Cat many, many times. And I don't really blame Caterpillar, it's all because of the b.s. gummint emmission restrictions all the engine makers have to meet now. I liked driving that old 5 speed Mack, when every time you changed gears you'd leave a huge cloud of black smoke in the sky! :D

  10. fix that post-I can't resist, this one's too easy-

I know for sure that Herb means harm in what he has said to you. The people here are very hard. a few are Just Sorry. We just want to stay friendly for Herb is one of several people that are a real ass to this forum.

Thank You for your participation here!!

    mike

Now Mike!..that's no way to be talking about Herb!

  11. Nifty ol trailer for sure. I always keep my eyes open for something like that for my truck(like I really need it). Even a s/a flat or drop deck would be cool.

Speaking of hard to steer, my '69 F100 has full spool/35 spline Moser axles, 29x12 M/T tires so the little 3 1/2" front runners give little indication of turning LOL!! It has UNDERSTEER really bad, especially on highway on/off ramps. You really have to work that wheel hard to get it to go around without ending up in the ditch. Been that way for 20 yrs now and likely never get changed. Sure is fun to drive though.

So, I guess you probably don't haul a lot of hay out of the field or go in the woods after a load of firewood with it very often then, eh?

  12. Well, after another year has gone by, I'm finally getting around to finishing this up. Rob dropped the parts off early this year and it's been sitting in a box ever since. I got out tonight and get the rear housing off the tranny and ready to machine it for the sending unit. Once it's done and back on I'll work the wiring and get speedo mounted in dash. I'm going to try to get machining done through this weekend? Hopefully.

The only big issue I would like to change is the speedo face. I'd really like to tear it apart and use my old Mack face as the numbers aren't too far off and would then look the part. One fancy new speedo in with a bunch of old gauges just doesn't fit the patina. We'll see.

wow! looks like a big suplosion!

  13. Rob you got to watch them Virginia folk, they are good at coming up with crazy contraptions, trust me I know! As far as the Pete's go I drove one even though it was around the yard where I was working out before the economy hit the crapper, My knees kept rubbing the steering column and I'm only 5'4. I had no air in the seat and you know with being short had the seat all the way forward! These were 03-05 model years, I didn't have that problem with the old square dash Pete's but I haven't drove a newer KW or even been in one to see if my knees would hit the dash. I doubt they would on a KW cause you got more room a KW than ya do a Pete. I sat in a 90-93 T600 but it didn't have tilt steering so I couldn't tell if my knees would hit the steering column or not but I was comfortable in it, then again I've always liked Kenworth more than Pete especially the T600 and now the T660. Besides Kenworth is a better built truck and a much better laid out truck as far as interior goes and your not cramped like a Pete. I was so cramped in the Pete that I was literally right up on the dash and I didn't like that at all, plus these were day cabs if that really makes any difference. The Pete and KW debate is like a Chevy and Ford debate but KW and Chevy is gonna win every time in my book.

Actually KWs and Petes are both PACCAR. I always heard that when they finished a KW on the assembly line they made a Peterbilt out of the leftover parts...or was it the other way around?

But you're right, it's a hard truck to get comfortable in for me too.

  14. Chevette: I remember those things well. As kids we took a nice little two door car and stuck a 73 400 Chevy and turbo 375 from a Kingswood station wagon in it. We wound up with a driveshaft about 24 inches long when finished. I used the outer perimeter of the original hood, and a busted aftermarket "L88" corvette style hood scoop from a Camaro hood for clearance. The hood was light enough that the hinges were not used, just pins to hold it down. It was difficult to get a radiator to fit into the space due to vertical dimensions and little width. A good portion of the donor parts were from a rusted 75 Chevy "Monza" car that originally had the 262 V8. The original plans were to use it's automatic but it wasn't any good, and the station wagon was rusted badly too. When the fuel tank fell out, my neighbor quit driving it and gave it to me as it ran well.

That sucker was a lot of fun for awhile. Someone needed it more than I so I sold and it was wrecked shortly afterward. I moved to V8 Vega projects after that cause Nova cars were excellent donors at that time, and plentiful.

    Rob

I bet it WAS fun. Mom and Dad bought a brand new '71 Impala 4 door with a 400 small block, 2 bbl. carb.-first brand new car we ever had- and it would go!.. and that was a LARGE car!
