    Man, look at that Peterbilt...sure is clean! Figured i'd take it's picture...who knows when it'll be that clean again!
    And some random photos of an old GMC I saw on rt. 220 in West Virginia, between Franklin and Petersburg and the view from the mountain on rt.33 after you cross into West Virginia,west of Harrisonburg,Va. I erroneously said it was on rt. 42 near Mt. Storm,and the views are similar, but noted West Virginia highway and byway expert Big Jim noticed that there was a climbing lane coming up,which Scherr mtn. doesn't have, and the mountain at Scherr is 10%, not nine.
    What a clean Pete....oh, and I put another video on youtube today, pulling out after i'd gotten loaded at Sharon Coatings (formerly Winner Steel) in Sharon,Pa.

    Got the pipe unloaded in Cranberry Township without too much problem. Biggest problem was that somewhere between Cranberry and Pittsburgh my trailer dump valve quit working. Pittsburgh is one of the least truck-friendly places I know of anyway and I ran over every curb in town...well,most of 'em it seemed like. That can be very hard on tires. I checked the fuses and the wires going to the dump valve where they have a tendency to break off and didn't find any obvious problem,so i'll have them check it at the shop today. They're almost like real mechanics,and I ain't much of a truck driver so I need my dump valve. Gotta run up to Handy in Lynchburg now and unload the load I dropped there last night.

    ...and then I was cooking the three chicken breastesess on the grill,and when they were done I moved the whole grill grate over to the side that wasn't over the charcoal.So the one that's twice as big as the other two could cook a little longer,I moved it back over the coals with the tongs,and forgot the grate was over top of the other one,and dropped it right into the coals and ashes.I brought it in and washed it off and put it back on-on the grate this time. I'm gonna eat it anyway.

    I forgot to mention it was dark when I dropped that piece of chicken.All I could see was the glowing charcoal.I just got in,unloaded lumber in Eighty Four,Pa. this morning and went to Neville Island and picked up a light load (18,000 lbs.) of rejected steel beams to take back to Petersburg Monday. I unloaded in Curwensville,Pa. Monday morning and had to go to Pittsburgh to reload.I ran 879 to 286 to 119 to rt.22 to 376 into Pittsburgh.When I got on 22 I noticed a truck back behind me a ways in the left lane passing everything.When I stopped at a red light he got back in the left lane so he could pass me like I was tied to a stump,but I was empty and pulled away easily.When he got his speed back up though,he passed me like I was backing up-right there in front of the Mack place in New Alexandria.Watt's Mack,I believe it is. Anyway,at the top of the hill just west of Watt's there's a turnout there on the right,for left turns and u-turns.All of a sudden the truck whipped off in there,and I couldn't see what was going on because he was pulling a van,but when I passed by I could see-there were several carloads of D.O.T. men in there.My first thought was panic because I thought maybe they were pulling everybody in,and it was too late for me.They're gonna run me down,i'm in a heap of trouble now !...but no,they never even looked at me as I drove by,but there's no doubt if the other guy hadn't been in such a hurry and passed me when he did i'd have been next in line,and the next victim.

    Day Off

    Got home yesterday after our safety meeting and went to the garden and pulled up what was left of my cabbage,(saved what I could),squash,watermelons,and A row of snaps.Then I ran the tiller over it and sowed turnips,mustard,and spinach mustard,and sprinkled it with the hose.It's so dry everything I pulled up had done all it's gonna do,so maybe I'll have a turnip and some greens if it ever rains. Then I went to the store and bought A case-the Ice Road Truckers marathon comes on at 1:00,and the Michigan race too,so I might just sit on my a...uh,tail I mean,and take the day off today.

    I made it to Donora all right with that half a load of kyanite.Made up for the light load with the return load though-brought 5 coils back to Lynchburg that weighed 49,980. All 5 of them that is,not each. That's good,they pay by the weight and the load I took to Donora pays the same as a full load. Then I went to Orchard Park with kyanite,but I didn't have time to go to Fishers and do a surprise building inspection because I had to go to Brookfield,Oh. and load some coils for Metalsa in Roanoke. Dropped the trailer at Sonny Merryman's when I got unloaded so they can replace that dump valve.
    Then I came home and cut the grass-mower started on the first pull. Now i've got to go to the dentist today,try to get some parts for my old tiller so I can get to work on the garden,and probably go load somewhere to deliver Monday. So even if it seems like you get a day off,you really don't except for Saturday.
    And I learned something this week.I ran with Frankie to Orchard Park and back to Roanoke.Frankie who was complaining about his new Peterbilt.He was used to his high powered 550 Cat Western Star,the old single turbo 550. I never ran with the Western Star,but everybody said it was the pullingest truck in the fleet. I thought my truck was doing pretty good,but he outpulled me with the new truck. Same load,and he had a 53' trailer.I had a 48. Outpulled me. With a 485 hp ISX Cummins and 3.36 rears. At least now I don't feel bad about Jeff having one ordered.

It might work,since it downloaded this picture twice...stupid computers

    I found out my scanner was not compatible with windows vista,you could only get a driver for windows 98,nothing after that,and the primax website said they weren't gonna make any more drivers available for any later versions,so I figured I was just SOL. Since i'd been wanting a scanner because I take all of my road pictures with a 35mm,I bought a printer/scanner/copier at Wal-Mart today. Only thing is when I installed the program and gave it a try I lost all of my pictures that used to be in HP photosmart. And I had like 300 pictures...now i've got 35. I used to click on photosmart,view library-total pictures 300 or what ever,now it says total pictures 35. I mean ALL of my pictures were there...now I got 35...what's up with that?!! Where'd they go?..
    It had all of my truck show pictures,all my webcam pictures,all of the digital pictures-every picture I had! Oh well,no sense crying over lost pictures-though that was my first thought-most of them are on The Diesel Gypsy's site,some are on webshots,a lot of them are on BMT,some on Kodak easyshare,some are on disc...and the rest are just gone evidently.."gone like a freight train,gone like yesterday,gone like a soldier in the civil war ,bang bang,gone like a '59 cadillac,like all the good things that ain't never coming back,she's gone ...     Had some pictures at Wal-Mart too,Jobyna dropped the film off there Friday.She had it in the one hour developing envelope already,but there was no one at the counter.When they paged the photo "technician" she came over and took it out of the envelope and put it in the 4 day envelope,I guess because she was too lazy to develop it then. When we went to pick it up yesterday they said it would be in Tuesday. I was disappointed and Jobyna was HOT!

    Not too bad a week this week, better'n last week anyhow! I left Sunday going to Orchard Park, then went to Cleveland and picked up a load of coiled wire ( or "welfare wire" as Big Jim calls it ) going to Summerville, S.C. That's just outside of Charleston. Todd took the loads because he had loads going to N.B.Handy in Lynchburg at Nucor Steel in Huger, which is just outside of Charleston.
    After I unloaded at Handy I could have reloaded a Charlotte load, but I declined because it's race weekend in Charlotte, plus the Memorial Day weekend traffic on top of that...so I came home and cut the grass.
    Went to Petersburg yesterday and got a load of beams going to Syracuse. I'm already dreading the traffic going up 81 Monday. Got home and "weed eated" for a while then planted a few more tomato plants that I pulled from the plant bed. Got a little room left for a few pepper plants, but they're not quite big enough to plant yet. Then the garden will be packed full. Saw a rabbit out there yesterday looking at it through the fence, but Otherdog (the fearsome beagle) ran him off.

    Dmv Trip

    I went to the DMV office in Altavista this morning before I went to work to get the title for the mixer changed.It kind 've started out like a typical Monday morning. I had to find a notary public first,to get my official DMV antique license application form notarized. I stopped at the first bank I saw,but they wouldn't do it because I didn't have an account there. So I went down to the Altavista town offices,got it notarized,then went to the DMV office. I had to get it changed because my wife's name was on the title too,and she passed away 2 and 1/2 years ago. The first thing the woman at DMV wanted to know was if I had a copy of the death certificate...well,..no- your records indicated that one of the owners was deceased,that's why I have to change the name on the title. O.K, I'll just look it up...yep,that's what it says-take a number and have a seat until we call you. A few minutes later they called me to the counter and a man looked at the paperwork and said " I can't do this-it's got to be a supervisor.Have a seat again". So I sat back down and the guy went in the back somewhere and came back a few minutes later with a woman,the supervisor. I explained my situation,showed her the letter and paperwork,gave her the old title,and she said that's $10 for the title change. I said " but what about the one-time $50 fee the letter says I have to pay again?". She said "you don't have to pay that,you just get the name on the title changed and keep your old tags,and you're all set". Great! Here's your ten dollars,i'll see 'ya! So it only cost me $10 when I was expecting to have to pay 50 more,so it turned out to be a pretty good day after all,and having to go to the DMV for anything is usually not good. If I had mailed it in I would have sent the $50 for new antique plates,because the letter they sent me said that's what I had to do,and they would have sent me new plates and never told me I didn't need new ones so they could get that $50 i'm sure. Then I went on to Lynchburg and unloaded the coils I dropped Friday night and went to the shop and fueled,and got the rest of the day off. Gotta go to Richmond tomorrow and load some air compressors going to a power plant in Oak Harbor,Oh.

    OK,Iknow this isn't the recipe corner,but today I cooked some doves on the grill- Jobyna's son Billy,who lives in Glouchester,Va,had to work in the area this weekend and is spending the weekend with us.His coworker went dove hunting and he brought 16 doves home this evening.I used to go dove hunting when I was A teenager,and I don't think I had 16 total kills in my dove hunting career. My mom used to cook them,but I didn't really remember how.So I put them in some wreynolds wrap with some olive oil and the rub,put A strip of bacon over them,put them on the grill,turned them once,and I must say they came out very delicious.Whod'a thunk it?

    Saw in the paper this morning that Mrs. Moore passed away Sunday. She was the wife of H.H.Moore,mother of F.L.Moore,and Jeff and Todd's grandmother.I work for them now at F.L.Moore and sons,but I drove for H.H.for more than 25 years,started there in1979. H.H. and Evelyn started H.H.Moore trucking co. in 1946.I'll be here until tomorrow now,so I can go to the funeral.

    The Appomattox Railroad Festival and Parade is this weekend.Last year Tom at the shop put the big "Mack" sign on the water tank on the mixer the morning of the parade. I had to burn the frost off of it with a hair dryer first,and we tilted a space heater up inside the shop to try to warm it up so the decal would stick. When I stopped by the shop to get fuel before I went to Seneca Tuesday it was 94 degrees. Still no rain ....speaking of Tom at the shop ( I'm Tom too ),he's discovered a new form of entertainment (?)-he took the top off a windshield washer fluid jug,drilled a hole in it and screwed an air line chuck into it.Then he connects an air line to it that has a shut-off on the wall,sets the empty jug by the tool box or under a trailer and waits for an unsuspecting victim to walk by,then he turns the air on and the jug explodes like a cannon firing. I think he's gotten about everybody-i'll be glad when he runs out of empty jugs.I think when I fill my washer tank if the jug is empty i'll cut a hole in it with my pocket knife.

    Got the grass cut this morning,then had to put a fence around the garden to keep these two out of it. They've been trampling,digging,and laying all over it. Otherwise,it's looking pretty good so far. The big dog is not mine-he's lived here as long as I have,and we feed him about 3,000 lbs. of dog food a week,but he's not mine.

    I picked everything that was left in the garden yesterday, lots of peppers and a few green tomatoes. They said it might frost last night, and it's 30 degrees here this morning.
    Old Bill, the Diesel Gypsy, sent me a picture of a jack-o-lantern, and Jobyna had to have one just like it.
    I must be off to LaCrosse now.

    Got the new brake chamber installed,it was much easier than getting the old one off,except for the $78 price tag.That's about twice what I expected to pay.I had to order the 24/24 chamber,and it's more expensive than a 30/30 chamber,which we had plenty of at the shop but I couldn't use because of tire clearance issues.Now i've got a leaking power steering hose to replace for my next project,then i'll be caught up until...next time.

    Flea Market Find

    I went by Carter Cat this morning and pulled the truck outside the gate so I could get it Sunday,then went to Concord,got my check,went to the bank,then the post office for stamps,then to Appomattox to the drugstore,and when we got back to Concord and turned on 24 Jobyna saw a little water can at the little flea market they always have on the corner there,by the produce stand.Of course she wanted to stop and look around. I said "I don't want none of that crap",so we stopped to look around. I found 2 "Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" tapes for a dollar each. Made a pretty good score there after all.

    I made the trip to Florida and back,but i'd rather have gone to Romulous,Michigan or somewhere. It's too hot down there,and my AC wasn't working. I've always heard you should run the AC periodically in the winter,but I never did. Guess I should have,it worked fine when I turned it off last fall. It was a sweltering 80 degrees in Boca Raton Tuesday evening. Didn't get there 'til about 2 o'clock,because I didn't get away from Lynchburg until 3:00 Monday. I had 8 skids of sheets, 4 pallets of racks, and 1 machine. Made it down to exit 7 in Ga. Monday night and stopped at the little fuel stop and went to bed. Next morning I fueled up,because I figured fuel would be higher in Fl, got my book right,and went on to Boca Raton. I had to load lumber in Brooklet,Ga. Wednesday so I made it back up to exit 7 in Ga. and went to bed-almost 700 miles round trip,all but 14 miles in Florida.
    Like last time I saw:
    0 armadillos
    0 alligators
    1 girl in a bikini,but she was on a billboard
    ...but I did see lots of palm trees,and have pictures to prove it!
    Worst part though was right after I left the shop Monday-my trailer was in Lynchburg,and I had to go to the bank so I just bobtailed. When I pulled into 460 I thought I saw something in the mirror at the end of the driveway that looked like diesel fuel,and pulled over to make sure my fuel tank tops were tight. They were, but when I walked back around the front of the truck a tanker went by and blew my hat off. I looked in front of the truck...nothing.Looked underneath it,in the woods,in the median-no sign of it. I'm not concerned about the hat,it was just a black "Cat" cap,but it had my little bulldog pin on it with the bulldog wearing an "Aussie" hat. I bought that pin at the Winchester antique truck show year before last. I might stop there tomorrow at that little pull off and look again-I would like to find the bulldog. He's wearing a red hat if you happen to spot him.I bought a new cap at the fuel stop,and i've probably got dozens of them here-you should always carry a spare! I'm off today,unloaded the lumber in Moneta this morning, and i've got an appointment at the eye doctor tomorrow,but we didn't have anything today anyway,so... how do you like my new hat?

    I must be off-Jeff just called,and i'm still sitting at home drinking coffee. He said when I get around to going to Lynchburg to unload the load I dropped Friday night they're gonna reload me there for Boca Raton,Florida so i'd better get going. I'll try to take a picture of a palm tree,everybody's probably tired of snow pictures.

    I spoke with Shirley Sponholtz on the phone recently,and she is A very nice person.You might be thinking,"so...who the heck is Shirley Sponholtz?" Well,she's the editor of "Old Time Trucks" magazine. I called to order some back issues my mixer was in,and she answered the phone! And she talked to me like A regular person,so I guess she's A regular person. When the back issues came,they were the wrong issue,but I just kept them and re-ordered the issues I wanted by mail.Yes,I paid for them!.They sent the wrong issue again,so I sent an E-mail telling them it was wrong,and she called me,but I wasn't home,so they called me today to get everything straightened out,and we did. Most people wouldn't bother to call twice if you had A problem,or once for that matter,but it really impresses me that people like Shirley,Barry,William Weatherstone-all trucking people-will go out of their way to help you with A problem,and treat you like an equal ...well,I'm just happy to know people like that. I've never met Paul VanScott,Bulldog Man,or Freighttrain,or anybody else but I like them all,and kind've feel like I know them...know what I mean? All good truckin' people. I'm just A Mr. Nobody,but A great antique truck magazine is called "Old Time Trucks"-give Shirley A call @513-573-3513,maybe she'll answer the phone.

    From Rats To Wine

    Thought this was worth sharing-
    I've never really been much of a wine conner-sewer, but I came across a recipe for homemade wine that's really easy. My Momma made the best wine i've ever tasted, better than anything that came from the store. She made it in the big stone crocks from grapes, cherries, dandelions...I don't know what else, if anything, I always liked the grape best.
    But anyway, she sent me a recipe this week for homemade wine and all you need is an empty plastic milk jug. I used my one gallon water jug that I take with me in the truck-it's just like Dozer's-instead of a milk jug. I've got grapes growing in the back yard and around the edge of the woods here. I thought they were wild grapes, but after doing some research, and making Jo eat some first to make sure they weren't poisonous, I found they were called Muscadine grapes. They are the sweetest and "grapiest" tasting grapes I ever tasted, but they were kind of "chewy" and had lots of seeds in them. They were delicious, but not too good to eat. So that's where the wine comes in-
    you just put the grapes in a milk jug, or a water jug-mine's about 2/3 full.
    mash the grapes with a wooden spoon or something-my "wild" ones were hard to mash, so I mashed them in a bowl with a soup ladle first, then put them in the jug.
    Add just enough water to cover them.
    Place a cover (loosely!) over the jug and allow to ferment for around 4 days. Then strain the juice in small amounts, discarding the pulp.
    Add 3 pounds of sugar for each gallon of juice-(time to start tasting, this sounds like a lot of sugar to me!)
    Cover (loosely!) and let ferment for 10 days, or until fermentation stops.
    Bottle with a loose top and put in a cool place.
    This was my great-grandfather's recipe. He said "churn" instead of milk jug, but it still works. Ma added this-
    "After the first straining I put the juice in another milk jug, add the sugar and put a balloon on the jug. It'll work for about a week. Then strain again, but leave all the thick mess in the jug-don't strain it. Taste to see if it's sweet enough-if not, add sugar. Let sit in balloon covered jug about another week.
    Strain through about 4 layers of cheesecloth, then bottle. Top with balloon again until it's not working anymore, then cork."
    I've got mine in the water jug now! I never knew making wine was so simple-probably a good thing, or I might be face down in a back alley in the bad part of Gladys now!

    They're calling for frost tonight and tomorrow night so I picked all my tomatoes that were ripe,or showing any sign of ripening.Then I went back and picked the biggest and best looking of the green ones.I'm gonna wrap them in newspaper,put them in a box and put them in a closet to see if they'll keep for a while.Shame the biggest and best looking tomatoes are on the vines now that it's about to frost,but they just didn't get any rain until last week.I've got a pepper plant that's still blooming and I pulled that up too and brought it in.If anyone wants a tomato just let me know,there's plenty more green ones out there- they're free,shipping and handling is $39.95 each.

    might as well talk about the garden...ain't been doing any truckin'. It's really growing and looking good. Even the upside down tomater in the bucket looks pretty good...bucket's kinda ugly though. Got some herbs in the round things. Waitin' on Paul to tell me what to do with 'em. And squirrels are already eating the peaches, and they're not even close to being ripe. Why don't these squirrels eat all these acorns and hickory nuts around here, like real squirrels?
