Well,I got in one trip this week anyway.Went to Export,Pa. with a load of beams-that's near New Alexandria, but I didn't have time to stop and see Barry.Or more likely,he doesn't have time to fool with me. I had to get over to Malta,Ohio and get a load of cement mixers and everything that goes along with them. Had the trailer loaded from back to front, front to back, side to side-had 2 stacks of plastic bins piled up in the middle to 13' 6",a couple of wheeled carts, and the rest mixers.
Unloaded them in Vinton this morning, stopped by the shop and fueled, then went to Dillwyn and loaded for Orchard Park,N.Y. for Monday delivery.

The year before last I went to the ATHS show in Winchester for the first time. I saw A book there on Saturday called " 100 Years of Semi Trucks",but I didn't buy it.I kept thinking about it and decided I was going to buy it the next day,but ended up going on A side trip to Altoona,Pa. and never got back to the truck show. I ended up ordering the same book from Amazon.com,and I don't remember the price but it was money well spent.I had it out today looking through it,and this one paragraph on page 21,chapter 3,says so much about how trucking has changed from the 30's to today-" Driving trucks back in the 1930's was not easy. Although the highways were improving, riding comfort was not what it is today. Most of the roads were two-lane highways and in the mountainous regions,a driver could wear himself out by all the frequent shifting. 'The First 50 Years',a history of Consolidated Freightways, recounts a run by a C.F. driver in 1937 from San Francisco to Reno on old Route 40. From Roseville,California,to Reno,a distance of 125 miles, the driver shifted gears 844 times. On a 36-mile stretch from Roseville to Colfax , he shifted 318 times in 1 hour and 58 minutes. And on another stretch from Fox Farm to Donner Summit, a distance of 3.2 miles, the driver shifted 59 times in 18 minutes. A lot of trucks at this time had two sticks to shift, compared to one stick or an automatic today." ...WOW!

And i'm still tired.

I just got back from the Appomattox Railroad Festival parade and it was a good time.Looked like a really big turnout this year, and lots of parade entries.Only bad part is when you're in it you don't get to see it. They threw me out this year,so I had to make an early exit-they said not to throw candy, but they didn't say not to throw cans of beer and cigarettes to the kids, and I wanted to give them SOMETHING you know...(I am kidding of course, let me make that perfectly clear-I didn't throw anything, but lot's of other people were still throwing candy)

Once again after a very, very short weekend it's time to get back to work. As soon as I shave and take a shower i'll be leaving.
I got some corn and pole beans yesterday and started to plant it but there's a chance of rain through Wednesday so i'm gonna wait-if the ground's too wet the seeds might rot before they come up. Still plenty of time to plant them yet. I'll plant the beans between the corn and let the runners climb the corn stalks. I also bought a container of crushed red pepper and sprinkled it on the onions and cabbage that the dogs keep digging up.
I'm going to Masury,Oh.-or misery,Oh. as a lot of drivers call it-and have a load of coils in Brookfield to bring back to Roanoke. I don't feel like going,i'm already tired thinking about it,but I checked the maibox yesterday and got an electricity bill, credit card bill, telephone, insurance, and directv bill all at once so that kind've motivates you to get going. I paid all that last month, but they keep sending more bills so I got to keep on trucking...hate having to leave on Sunday

not much freight to be moved this week either.Unloaded in Emporia Monday, went to Petersburg and loaded A load of beams for Chattanooga,Tn. and had to deadhead to Birmingham to reload.Got a load of 55' beams going to South Plainfield,N.J. but we unloaded them at the shop today because they didn't want them in N.J. yet. That's OK with me,I don't like going to New Jersey anyway.

Paul's Monday sounds better than mine, but I had mine on Sunday this week.Started out looking like it was gonna be one of those days.I couldn't get the computer to come on because it wouldn't take the password. Not an AOL or website password, but the HP password to start it in the first place.I'd type it,but nothing would happen.Tried restarting 2 or 3 times, same thing. Finally I just shut it off completely and turned it back on and it worked. As I think I once heard somebody say here "stupid computers". Then I couldn't get on BMT,kept getting an error page,so I went to work and my truck wouldn't start.Batteries were dead.I'd even cleaned the refrigerator out Friday and turned it off,and it still wouldn't start.Usually I'll leave the refrigerator on all weekend and it starts right up.One of the batteries must have gone bad, they look like the original batteries,so they're 2 years old.Had to call Jeff (Moore) to bring some jumper cables, because mine were in the tool box on the back of the pickup, but the tool box was sitting in my back yard because I took it off for something and never got around to putting it back on. It started raining about the time he got there, and it still wouldn't start off his pickup.Another driver came in to leave about then, and he had cables too,so we pulled one of them Freightliners down by the truck and used both sets of cables and finally got it started. Then I was motoring along on I 64 near Covington, headed to Zelienople,Pa,when an SUV passed me and A rock or something flew up and broke my driver side windshield-not too bad,but worse than the usual little bubble A little rock makes. It hasn't started to spread yet,but it probably will when it gets cold because there's dozens of little cracks around the center of the point of impact. So,when I got up to I-79 and proceded North,I pulled into the first rest area I got to and made A ham and cheese sandwich, and after I ate I took A nap. After that, everything went very well-unloaded in Zelienople this morning, reloaded 5 coils in Sharon,Pa.going to Lynchburg, dropped the trailer there tonight and bobtailed home. I hope the truck starts in the morning.

I saw the results from the Cumberland County Christmas Parade .Ma sent me a newspaper clipping and I managed to get another first in the 1951-1975 antique car or truck category. The decorations I put on it looked really bad. It ended up looking like a cement mixer with a bunch of stuff hanging off it,but it always seems to be a popular entry down there. I saw lots of people looking at it,pointing at it,and taking lots of pictures of it. At least nobody seemed to be laughing and pointing at the driver.
I went to Fremont,Ohio and back first of the week and was ready to call it a week. I thought Jeff was gone to Florida, but he's not going until next week,so I went back up the road to Avon,Ohio. Besides,he gave me $200 for Christmas before I left so I figured i'd put forth the extra effort-it was just Wednesday anyway. You know what they say, " when the cat's away..." Now i'm glad I did go of course and i'll be off until Wednesday anyway.
I got my safety bonus for the year too and went to Wal-Mart yesterday and knocked out all my Christmas shopping-gift cards for everyone! I try to get a little something for the nieces, nephews, and granchildren anyway- Everyone else is on their own,but I did give some BMT calendars too.

I hauled a load of pipeline pipe from Tightsqueeze to Anderson,S.C. Monday, and one Tuesday-3 pieces per load,it was 42" pipe 40' long. I was supposed to do it again today, but they didn't work in Anderson so I came in last night and loaded a load of kyanite going to Fremont,Oh. for Monday delivery.I was kind of glad because the traffic was as bad yesterday as I expected it to be today. There was a cop on every ramp and behind every bush in North Carolina too.I didn't get any Captain Morgan's so I bought some rum flavoring at Food Lion for the sweet potato pies, and i'm gonna start smoking a turkey early in the morning.I threw my old electric smoker oven away, and cleaned out and leveled up my new gas smoker oven that I found by the dumpster a while back.I know that sounds bad,but that's where I got it.It's in really good shape, and the old electric one was just worn out and burned out.I've cleaned it out, though it looked pretty clean to start with.I just put some charcoal in the bottom, and as it burns down I keep adding wood until the turkey's done-the longer you can cook it without burning it the better.I'll let you know how it turns out-dumpster oven smoked turkey!

Unloaded that steel in Wilmington this morning and went up to Plymouth,N.C. to load a load of lumber,16' 2x10s.Had to weigh in and out,and where I loaded was a good ways from the scales,so I threw 2 straps across each stack of lumber to go weigh out.The weight was OK, so I just eased on out to the truckstop across the road to finish strapping down.It was about a half mile away, and there's a stop light at the end of the road, truckstop's straight across. When I got parked I saw that the inside boards on the top bundle of the front stack had already started to slide out of the bundle,so I went in the store and bought 2- 3 liter bottles of Mountain Dew. I poured the Mountain Dew on the boards that were sliding out, shoved them back in by hand, then poured the rest all over the top of the whole load. Put about 3 more straps on each stack and tightened them as tight as I could get 'em,and didn't have any more trouble-even when I had to brake hard to keep from running over that van that was doing about 40 mph in a 70 and a car was beside me...it's the sugar.

...so,after I went to Cranberry,Pa. and back to Lynchburg I went to Fremont,Oh. Last time I was there was during the great blizzard, this time it was water everywhere, rain, rain, and more rain. Lot of the fields looked like small lakes.Too bad we couldn't get some of that rain around here,we need it.
Brought another load of steel from Pittsburgh to Lynchburg, and was hoping i'd be done for the week, but I had to go back to that jobsite in the mud by the river in Point Marion,Pa. I should have some more pictures later today, after I go to the film developing place.Had to go to Butler,Pa.and loaded at AK Steel going to Chesapeake,Va.to unload Monday. Not much time off at all for the Easter weekend, which really made me...well,let's just say somewhat grouchy.Probably a good thing though, today I paid the electricity bill, phone bill,Visa card,Directv, and pickup payments. Plus an eye drop prescription, the film developing,gas,Wal-Mart,..who knows what else.
Never did get the dump valve on the trailer and would have had a tough time at Point Marion, with the hole, and the fence, and the dog-leg,but there's a button on top of the valve that you can push to dump the air. It's spring loaded and pops right back out when you let go,but I solved that by finding a stick and cutting it the right length with my pocket knife to wedge up under the trailer floor and hold the button down. Backed in easier than last time, and they didn't even have to get the dozer to pull me out this time.
These are more bigger better pictures from the Point Marion jobsite, showing how you had to back-up straight towards the tree, then cut the trailer over towards the crane,(to the right in the picture) with the fence and the hole to deal with. When I left I crossed the bridge, which was built in 1927. Had my eyes closed all the way across... must've made it...
