I delivered the load from Texas to Milton, Pa. Tuesday, then rode over to Brookfield, Oh. and got a load of coils and went to Roanoke. I thought I was going to Chester, W.V. with a curtain side, or Conestoga, or whatever you call it Thursday (they won't unload a flat bed in winter, and we didn't know if we could get a return load for a van), but they got a Fremont, Oh. load so I took that instead. Ran in lots of snow (again!) all the way (well, all right, most of the way!) up and back. Had to go from Fremont over to Butler, Pa. to reload at AK Steel-I hate AK Steel by the way, have I mentioned that before? My appointment was at 3pm, got there at 3:15 and waited in the holding pen until after 6 when they finally called the 3 o'clock trucks. Didn't get out of there until 9 last night, when it was blizzarding (I just made that word up). I drove down I-79, saw a cop in the median just before exit 99 in West Virginia, I looked at my speedometer and was doing 74 mph (speed limit was 70). He didn't move but then a 4 wheeler passed me like I was tied to a stump, and he came out and pulled the car over. I stopped where you get on rt. 19 and pulled on the shoulder and took a nap until almost daylight. Then I came on down 19 to Summersville and took rt. 39 over to Nettie, stopped at the GoMart for a coffee and sausage bistit, then rt. 20 to Charmco, and rt. 60 to I-64 at Sam Black Church. 39 and 20 was pretty much snow covered, but no problems. Everything was lovely when I got on 64, and I got to the shop about 11:30. Took some good pictures along the way too...

I delivered that load in Roxana Monday, and boy did I get a surprise! Neal told me when I called in empty to go to Blytheville, Arkansas to pick up a load going to- he said "I can't pronouce it, but it's p-u-y-a-l-l-u-p". I said "well what state is that in?" He hesitated a few seconds and said "Washington". So I said "yeah, right-where am I going?" He said "you wanna talk to your boss-man?" I said "yeah...it's probably in Kentucky somewhere". Then Jeff got on the phone and I asked him if I was going to Washington and he said "that's what Todd said". I still thought it was a joke and everybody at the office was in on it until I got loaded and it was on the shipping order, right there where it says "ship to", it said Puyallup Washington.
I went to Blytheville, got loaded, went back north to St. Louis, turned left and headed west. Had to stop and buy tire chains, because there's a substantional fine for not having them, but I had no intention of using them, if I had to wait 'til spring to cross the passes. I know Rob would have sent me a sammich by Fed-Ex. Only bad weather I hit was in Wyoming, from south of Casper all the way to Billings, Mt. Some of the slickest roads i'd ever encountered. Except for that, and fog in Washington (I saw Mt. Rainier from the top of the 10 mile 4% grade you climb after you cross the Columbia River in Washington, and never got to see it again because of the fog) , and high winds in Montana and Wyoming on the way back, the weather was great. It was warmer out there than it was here last week. It was 70 degrees in Denver when I came through on the way back. I unloaded in Puyallup Friday morning, then reloaded in Seattle for Houston, Tx. Had to stop in Spokane Friday night and take a 34 hours off because I was out of hours. Did all my laundry and left there Sunday morning. Unloaded in Houston Wednesday morning, went up to Midlothian and loaded steel going to Milton, Pa. Got to the shop at 6:30 this morning.
I took I-70 to Kansas City, then 29 north into Iowa, rt. 2 into Nebraska, then I-80 west to rt. 26 into Wyoming, then I-25 north to I-90 west all the way to Washington. Came back the same way except I stayed on I-25 all the way into New Mexico, then took rt. 87 and 287 to Dallas and I-45 to Houston. Then it was 45 and 287 to Midlothian, then 20 to 30 to 40 to Knoxville, and 81 back to Va.
I took 350 pictures on the trip, which i'm trying to put on discs now. I'll probably put some on webshots too.
I'm gonna put some pictures on here now, but since there's so many i'll just put them in a new gallery, so check them out...

Things must be slow around here, this is the third week in a row that I only made one turn. I went to Fremont, Oh. Monday and had to layover a night before I got a load back. Ended up loading 9 skidded coils in Hubbard, Oh. going to Orange, Va. After I unloaded in Orange yesterday I went to Petersburg and loaded for Roxana, Il. to deliver Monday. Loaded with H piling, going to a refinery. The rules they sent said drivers must be clean shaven, I guess in case you have to put a gas max on. I took it anyway.
Got in some ice road trucking Tuesday night on the way from Monroeville to Hubbard. Freezing rain the whole way. Saw many cars in the ditch and in the median from just west of Lodi over to Akron. I just eased along and had no problem, but it was pretty amazing to watch cars spin out and go off the road. You could see it happening, but nobody seemed to slow down-one would go off the road, next car would come along like nothing happened, hit the brakes and do the same thing. On one hill about a mile or so west of Lodi on rt. 42 there was about 6 or 8 cars off the road in a stretch of maybe a quarter of a mile. I had to get over by the guardrail on the right to squeeze by one car that was crossways in the left lane, and had about half of the right lane blocked too. I was empty, even though being loaded doesn't help you a lot on ice, and I never spun once. Evidently they didn't realize it was slick and were just going too fast when they figured it out. My first clue came when the rain was freezing on the windshield from the time I left Monroeville about 5 o'clock that evening. By the time I got to Lodi the mirrors, hood, antennas, sun visor-everything I could see-had a thick coating of ice on it, so I suspected the road might be slick too. Nary a salt truck did I see until I got on I-76 at Lodi.
Took a few pictures this week too, nothing very exciting though-
the dog dancing with his donkey,
tarping loads-like the song says,it's a dirty job-but someone's got to do it! Then your kyanite will be dry and your steel will still shine when you arrive at your destination.

I've got to leave Sunday for Midland City, Al. It's near Dothan. My DOT physical also expires Sunday, so I went to renew it today. Somehow I managed to pass it again, so i'm good for 2 more years. The young girl who took my blood pressure said "now we have to wait 'til we get a room". Meaning an examination room for the doctor of course. So I said ''get a room?!! but we just met, shouldn't we at least go to dinner first?''...yeah, I know-that's the same thing she thought. That's about as funny as a screen door in a submarine. I must be off.

I went to Midland City, Alabama Sunday...sorta-kinda. I made it all the way to Cowpens, S.C. before I took a nap. The after Christmas traffic was bumper to bumper so I stopped about 5:30 at Cowpens and got a bite to eat and laid down until about midnight. Then I got a super-size Red Bull and hammered down. Came all the way back to Atlanta and picked up a load going to Scherr, West Virginia Monday- a whopping 6,000 lbs. I unloaded at Scherr Tuesday morning-good little ride from Midland City. Scherr is near Mount Storm, at the junction of rt. 42 and 93. It's right at the bottom of the big mountain with all the windmills at the top. The Mount Storm power plant is at the top of the mountain too. That would be the 5 or 6 mile 10% grade mountain. Tons of fun in winter.
These pictures are of where I unloaded in Midland City-you can see this same spot on street view on Google Earth,on rt. 134 just west of Midland City.
And the view from the top of the mountain on rt. 55 before you get to Moorefield-you can see the smoke from the Mt. Storm power plant way off in the distance, and just barely the windmills.

OK, maybe it doesn't take a lot to excite me anymore. I got soaked in Fremont while untarping a while back, then soaked again in Erie Monday rolling my straps up. Already had a cold, and was wishing I had something to keep my head warm. The old baseball cap just wasn't doing it for me. Found just the thing at the local Wal-Mart store today. Covers my ears and if I have trouble hearing I can open the fold-out ears to hear a pin drop miles away (see second photo). It's camouflage colored except for the fur part, but you can't see it because it's camouflaged. And no,I won't be afraid to wear it-I wore it around in Wal-Mart until Jo insisted I take it off. I'll take comfort over style, especially when it's freezing in Ohio. And I picked up some new gloves too-the ''dollar a pair'' cardboard ones I usually get at truckstops only last a day or so before they're worn out. So i'm happy as a dog with two-well,you get the idea.
I went to Duluth,Ga. when I got back from Erie and picked up this load of racks ( the orange things on the trailer, not the things you rate online-uh...never mind that) and brought them back to King William,Va. I'm backed inside the warehouse at Nestle-Purina on Tidy Cat rd.(yeah,really-but everybody's gotta be somewhere) getting unloaded. I also took a picture of Jeff's new truck that I passed on.. It was at the shop when I got back Friday, but it was dark by then as I had to go to Petersburg and load for Montgomery, Alabama for Monday. Might be good to be headed south again because they said it's supposed to be very cold in Ohio tomorrow...very,very cold. Coulda' tried out my new hat though.

When I left Sunday headed to Erie,Pa. I called Ma to tell her I wouldn't be in the Christmas parade this year. She said ''you knew Gary Barr died didn't you?". No, I didn't.Gary was an old friend, been knowing him since high school.Been driving a truck all his life practically-he changed the date on his license to run double to California with me in 1979 because he was too young to run out of state, and he had been driving for several years then, even owned his own truck and leased it on with H.H.Moore Jr. Trucking Co. in Appomattox,Va. hauling wood chips to Covington,Va. Was an old 7400 White daycab, with a 220 Cummins and 10 speed. We ran together until I quit, and soon after they caught up with the license deal so the let him go,but told him to come on back when he did turn 21 because he must know what the hell he was doing.Years later Barry Warner and myself were on the way to Boston one night loaded with structural steel and ran across him on 95 between Washington and Baltimore. Gary was driving for P.L.Duncan then,Barry and I drove for H.H.Moore. We stopped in Baltimore and "hung out" for a couple of hours( you could do more,or 'get away with' way more then than now!), then Barry and I rode the rest of the night to be in Boston by 7 am...but we made it.
When I stopped at his house and took the pictures of the Diamond T it was the first time i'd seen him in years. He was driving for Abilene, had been with them a pretty good while. We talked in his shop, and he showed me the truck and told me how he'd found it in N.Y. and brought it back in an Abilene van. I printed the same 2 pictures I posted here full page size on my best photo paper and mailed them to him. When I saw the parade entries listed in the Farmville Herald, I noticed one said "In Memory of Gary Barr" but it just didn't register-I thought he had the Diamond T in the parade in memory of his Dad or something, but no,it was him. His Mother called him to come eat dinner last Monday night and when he didn't answer she went out to his shop and found him dead of an apparent heart attack. He was only 49,and a truck driving son of a gun!

Only got in one trip this week, was supposed to go to Negley, Ohio monday but went to Fremont instead. Had to untarp one pallet at a time in the pouring rain so it wouldn't get any wetter than it already was. Then I went to Brookfield to load and there was 4 trucks ahead of me at door 12. Got there at 3 o'clock and left at 8. Didn't really matter though. I unloaded about noon Wednesday in Roanoke and was done for the week until I went to Moneta today and loaded treated lumber for Erie, Pa. I wouldn't leave until late Sunday, or maybe Monday morning, because of the Cumberland county Christmas parade, but it's so slow i'm just gonna have to miss it this year and get on up to Erie. First one i've missed since I've had the mixer, and won a trophy every time. But times are tight, gotta go-can't eat those trophies!
And speaking of the mixer, I started it Wednesday and it looked like there was a piece of clear plastic laying on the hood. I got out to get it off and unfortunately it was not a piece of plastic but the clear-coat peeling off in big sheets. My theory is that when I waxed it I waxed through the clear coat and a little moisture seeped in, then it froze and pulled it loose from the base coat. Never had any problem 'til I waxed it, so I assume that's what happened. Looks terrible now anyway. Might try to peel the clear-coat off and wax it, if that doesn't work too good I might have to repaint the hood. Someday, that is-right now I couldn't afford a can of krylon.

Got some film developed the other day, some pictures so old they were taken this summer. My scanner still won't work so I took a picture of the 35mm pictures I wanted to post with the digital camera. Tried it all at once this time instead of individually, so you'll probably have to biggerize it to see anything. This is an experimental process, thought i'd try it here instead of the test forum...we'll see.
not too bad- the pictures are, top row L to R- the Areva trailer I bobtailed to Florida to pick up, unloading Kyanite in Negley,Oh, loaded with coils in Masury,Oh.
middle row- log truck in Rustburg,Va, an old GMC I spotted in Concord,Va. this summer, Navaho truck in Food Lion parking lot in Altavista,Va. a few weeks ago.
bottom- what it would look like if you were following a coal bucket on rt. 20 in West Virginia.

Looks like i'm behind a little, haven't said anything since before Thanksgiving. I left Sunday and went to Orchard Park,N.Y. I must say that New York does an excellent job on the roads when there's snow, at least in that area (rt.219 from Pa. to Buffalo). Another driver went to Orchard Park last week to deliver Friday, but he broke down somewhere near Bradford, Pa. and had to have the truck towed to Bradford. He said the wrecker was an old Mack, but I don't now if he meant AC old, b-model old, or r-model old. Big Jim's truck broke down in Ohio the week before last and needed a camshaft, so he left it at the Freightliner dealer in Monroeville and rented a car to drive home to Reynoldsville,Pa. He went to Monroeville and picked his truck up when it was repaired then went to Lantz Corners, Pa. and picked up the Orchard Park load and delivered it.
Meanwhile, I delivered in Ochard Park Monday and went to Brookfield, Ohio and loaded coils for Roanoke. Dropped in Roanoke Tuesday and went to the shop and had my truck serviced. Todd told me I could go on home and he had an Orlando load out of N.B.Handy for tomorrow. Sunny Florida is nice this time of year, except when I went in Wednesday Orlando had been moved to Ohio, to a place formerly known as Negley, and the load changed to a load of kyanite. So I unloaded in Orlando-I mean Negley-Thursday morning and went up to Masury and loaded more coils for Roanoke. They said they couldn't unload them until after 1pm, so I lollygagged around and got there at 11:30 and untarped, and they said it would be many hours before they could unload me so I ended up taking them to a warehouse in Roanoke and unloading them.
They've got another Negley load for Monday, but they're gonna put a couple of new windshields in the truck Monday morning, so i'll load and go Monday.
Jeff's new truck came in last week. A pretty red 386 Peterbilt. He said I could take it or keep what I got, it didn't matter to him. I think i'll just keep what I got.
    Now the title fits anyway.

Last week when I left Thursday going to Masury,Ohio (everybody hates Masury ) Todd told me to "run this load, and you'll be done 'til after Thanksgiving". That didn't really happen, as I left Monday and took a load of fingers (well, that's what they called them) to Milan, Ohio. When I left he said "run this load, and you'll have a four day weekend coming up anyway". That didn't happen either. I delivered in Milan Tuesday, which is near Norwalk, and ran in snow all the way from Strasburg to Milan to Macedonia, which is near Cleveland, and back down I-77 almost to Charleston, W.V. before I ran out of it. I unloaded in Roanoke this morning and went to Dillwyn and loaded up an Orchard Park load for Monday. This is good, I was hoping he was joking when he said i'd be done 'til after Thanksgiving. I like to eat and have electricity too.
After I got home today I processed the turkey-you know, got all the accessories out that they put inside of 'em-and put it in salt water to soak overnight. It's in a cooler on ice on the back porch, along with the four extra turkey legs I bought-the ones that cost more than the whole turkey . Then I made turkey stock from the accessory pack i'd previously removed, and cooked all the sweet potatoes I had and made six pies. I feel like I had a pretty good day. I'll slap that turkey in the smoker oven first thing in the morning, everybody come on over!

Just a few pictures I took on the last Florida trip-load of sheets I took down, red & black Mack dump parked in front of N.B. Handy in Boca Raton, N.B.Handy trailer, a nocluejoe unloader machine with rubber tracks, the load of lumber I brought back, and an old GMC dump truck trying to hide a b-model Mack on rt.301 in South Caolina.

I finally left Tuesday and bobtailed to Florida to pick up a trailer at the St. Lucie nuclear power plant and bring it back to Lynchburg. Got there at 3:30 Wednesday evening but couldn't leave until Thursday morning. Had to wait for the paperwork, then they wanted it back in Lynchburg at 8:00 AM Friday The most interesting thing I saw was a crab crossing the highway just before I got there. I've seen lots of things, but that was a first. Now i'm loaded with sheets from N.B.Handy going to Boca Raton, Florida.

It's been an exciting weekend around here -i've raked leaves, flattened some cans and bagged them-not all Anheuser-Busch products by the way, I think I saw a Pepsi can in there-and cut some grass, piled leaves in the garden and ran the tiller through it, and made a squirrel feeder. The apples, pears, and peaches are gone and I wouldn't want them to go hungry. Besides, if work doesn't pick up I might eat the squirrels.
I went to Fremont last Sunday and after I got unloaded Monday morning I went to Brookfield and picked up a Roanoke load and unloaded in Roanoke Monday night. Then I was off Tuesday, no loads . Went to Richmond Wednesday morning and loaded some structural steel going to Columbia, S.C. Unloaded there Thursday morning, then went over to Nucor steel in Darlington and picked up some flatbar and channel going to Madison Heights, Va. After I got that off Friday morning, I went to the shop...then I went home-no loads.
My computer still only works half a$$ too -hey, kinda like me! Everything that worked off a usb port seemed to be malfunctioning, first the webcam, then the scanner/printer. I was afraid to try my digital camera because I figured it would fail to operate properly too, but it did work, and I took a few new pictures to illustrate the exciting events described in this blog entry
I had the truck here last week, and told otherdog to keep an eye on it...the second picture is 9 hours later and he hadn't moved-still keeping an eye on it! He's a good dog. There's an armadillo by the bush, but he paid no attention to it because I just told him to watch the truck.
I cooked a "chicken on a can" Friday. I usually use the old wood/charcoal powered gas stove behind the shed, but I decided to try the anti-freeze grill this time. The oven is much better, and faster, probably because of the insulation around the oven. It makes a delicious chicken though, just coat a whole chicken with "the rub", drink part of a can of of beer, put more rub in the beer left in the can, stick the chicken on the can and put it on the grill, or the smoker oven 'til it's done.
Too bad the leaves don't just blow next door! They have none, I have many.
This is my squirrel feeder, loaded with corn. Stolen from the cornfield by the road at that bridge job in N.C. I posted pictures of a while back by the way. The spot where there's no leaves is where the pickup was parked.
    Otherdog-the beagle that is.

I unloaded at Carter Lumber in Fairview, Pa. Monday morning and when I left there headed for Brookfield, Oh. it was snowing pretty hard. First snow i've seen this year. I ran out of it before I got too far though, and loaded coils and went on to Roanoke. Ran into more snow in West Virginia. Unloaded Monday night and came home, where I stayed Tuesday. Got a 55' load of piling Wednesday going to Columbus that had to be there at 6am Thursday morning. So I got there Wednesday night, and they jumped right on it and started unloading me at 11am the next morning . Only problem was I had to be in Sharon, Pa. by 2:30 to pick up an N.B.Handy load coming to Lynchburg. Headquarters called them and told them I was running a little late and they said if I got there by 3:00 they would load me. It's hard to make any time in Ohio, especially when there was a cop or DOT man in every crossover on I-71. I usually don't run but about 57 or 58 in Ohio, but I dropped the hammer and set my cruise control about 62mph. Signed in at Sharon Coating at 2:57.
Unloaded at Handy yesterday morning, stopped by the shop to fuel and turn paperwork in, then went to Dillwyn and picked up a Fremont load for Monday. The extra day off threw my schedule off, or i'd be on the way to Greensboro to the ATHS show now.
I wish now i'd waited 'til Friday to put 2 front tires on the pickup. The inspection expired Friday night, so Jo took it over here to this little garage on 699 to get it inspected. They said it needed a left front tire, so she called me, and I told her to just take it up to the tire place- the one on Ward's Road, by the Sheetz, where we get all the truck tires- and get two tires put on it. So she did, and they inspected it again. She called me back and said the bill came to $293. I said we only needed 2 tires (one, actually) not all 4. She said that is for 2 tires, and the inspection. They put a bulb in the license plate light and charged $7.00 to put a 10 cent bulb in, inspection was $16, the tires were $110 each, plus mounting and balancing.I called the tire shop and asked them if they put gold or silver tires on it, that was about twice what I was expecting to pay. They said "well, that's a good tire, it's a 60,000 mile tire" . It oughta be a good tire for that kind of money, but they should've called me and asked before just slapping the 2 highest priced tires they had in the store on it. Last time I go there. I could have beat that price, and gone where mounting and balancing is free when you buy new tires
Now I gotta go to CVS and get a roll of film developed, make some more hot sauce, and smoke a pork loin
Was gonna scan a few pictures...now the #$@ *&!! scanner won't work either! Stupid #*^@ing computers!
Well, anyhow...my pork loin's almost done, and i'm running off another batch of hot sauce-that makes it a little better

I went to LaCrosse and unloaded Monday morning and when I called in empty Todd said to go home and pick up a van load Tuesday evening in Lynchburg at 4:00pm going to Port St. Lucie, FL. So I did, except they called Tuesday evening and said it would be ready at 6:00 instead of 4:00. Had to be in Florida with it Thursday morning, so I had plenty of time to get there. I dropped the trailer at a power plant Thursday morning, and bobtailed all the way back. Good paying load too.
Now i've got a load of treated lumber at the shop going to Fairview or Fairfield, Pa. Jeff said it was near Erie, and it was Fair-something or other...went in one ear and out the other.
This computer has about driven me crazy since nocluejoe broke my webcam . I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, but it still wouldn't work...tried a different usb port-nothing. So I figured it must be the camera itself and bought another one, but it still wouldn't work. Re-uninstalled it and tried downloading the latest updated driver direct from Logitech-nothing. What gets me is the little icon at the bottom of the monitor says "your device is ready to use" but QuickCam says ""your camera is not plugged in, or is not working properly" . Well, duh! It's connected to a usb port, and obviously the %$&* thing ain't working properly ! I fooled with it half a day, control panel, device manager, programs and features, windows trouble shooting- i've been to 'em all...but it still wouldn't work
...wonder if Barry knows anything about computers?

I picked everything that was left in the garden yesterday, lots of peppers and a few green tomatoes. They said it might frost last night, and it's 30 degrees here this morning.

So, where was I? Oh, last week I went to Petersburg to load a 60' load going to Masury,Oh, but just as I was pulling off the scales I got a call from headquarters telling me not to load it because they didn't want it in Masury until the end of the week. I ended up taking a load to Piedmont,S.C. instead, then loaded a load of 60' re-bar in Darlington for Fredericksburg,Va. Had a flat on the way back with that load, had to call road service to bring me a steer tire. Then I went to Petersburg and loaded a 60' load for Masury,Oh. All on my 48' trailer. I like my trailer. Not as good as the old Ravens I used to pull though- cain't beat a Ravens. Everybody hates going to Masury, because you have to tarp the steel beams that are stored outside, and everyone who works there is an a-hole, from the people in the office to the guys on the floor. Just hateful for no apparent reason.
But I survived and loaded at Brookfield for Roanoke. I unloaded there Monday and then went to Dillwyn and loaded for Fremont, Oh. Haven't been there for a long time, it's one of my favorite runs. Then I went back to Masury and loaded coils for Roanoke. Then to Petersburg and Wilmington,N.C. Then empty back to Lynchburg and picked up a Duluth,Ga. From there I went to Birmingham and picked up skidded coils ( good thing-I left my coil racks in the tool box on my trailer in Lynchburg) to unload in LaCrosse, Va. Monday. I ran over 3,000 miles from Monday 'til Friday.
Then I made some of the best chili ever today, even cooked some pasketti noodles and served it Cincinnati style-very delicious. And of course I took a roll of film to Wal-Mart, only to find they don't do 1 hour phtos any more! Had to go to CVS, but I got 'em.
A nice looking Argosy Freightliner from Canada, loading in Petersburg.

I'm home today so I could go to my brother's wedding. I'm still loaded for Roanoke, but I could have gotten somebody else to deliver the load tomorrow while I took a van load to Georgia tonight. And we had some really good paying loads of 55' piling going to Chicago, to deliver at 3:00 Monday evening. But I had to go to the wedding-Ma wanted me to take pictures. Only thing is, I found out when I talked to her last night that the wedding's not 'til NEXT weekend. D'oh!!!

I've got a full report of my weekly adventures, but don't have pictures to prove any of it, so i'll save that for later. Even took photographic evidence of myself being broke down again, but it was just a flat tire...right front steer tire as a matter of fact.
Went to the Appomattox Railroad Festival Parade today, drove the mixer in it.( new video on youtube,by the way ) . What a great day for a parade! Beautiful weather, great turnout, more beautiul women than you could-well...you know. Didn't get any pictures of any of them because Jo-well...you know. Did get a few pictures though.
And how about college football? I always thought the greatest college football game ever played was Oklahoma/Nebraska in 1971 or '72, won by Nebraska 35-31. I've been a Sooner fan ever since. But the Oklahoma/Texas game today was also a great one, as was North Carolina/Notre Dame. Now,even though there's not a lot of good news around anywhere at the moment, if Kyle Busch finishes out of the top twenty again...that'll be good.
    And, some pictures from today...
a nice looking restored Duster 340 ( oops-forgot to resize)

Man, look at that Peterbilt...sure is clean! Figured i'd take it's picture...who knows when it'll be that clean again!
And some random photos of an old GMC I saw on rt. 220 in West Virginia, between Franklin and Petersburg and the view from the mountain on rt.33 after you cross into West Virginia, west of Harrisonburg,Va. I erroneously said it was on rt. 42 near Mt. Storm, and the views are similar, but noted West Virginia highway and byway expert Big Jim noticed that there was a climbing lane coming up,which Scherr mtn. doesn't have, and the mountain at Scherr is 10%, not nine.
What a clean Pete....oh, and I put another video on youtube today, pulling out after i'd gotten loaded at Sharon Coatings (formerly Winner Steel) in Sharon,Pa.

OK,the title is overhyped. Got my last roll of film developed yesterday, and some were taken so long ago I don't remember what they were, or where I took them, but here's some of them for your enjoyment anyway.
Been very busy this week, felt much better after finding out Big Tail was gonna be all right. I went to Orchard Park Monday, then to Brookfield to Roanoke, then from Lynchburg to Orlando, then loaded 60' beams at Nucor in Huger, S.C. going to Fort Washington, Md.( D.C. area ). When we got to Fort Washington Friday I thought we were at the wrong address, but unfortunately we were not. It was at an apartment complex, and we couldn't figure any reason for 60' beams to be there in the first place. Turns out there was a large sink hole behind the very back building, and that's where the steel was going. We had to blind side back in off the street into the apartment complex, then back about a quarter of a mile, including 3 sharp bends, to get back to where we unloaded. There were cars parked on both sides too, to make it more interesting. I only took the one picture of this site, after I'd gotten unloaded. When we backed in there was a white Ford pickup parked in the spot just to the left of the dumpster in the picture, so that was the tightest spot to get around. They unloaded us with a boom truck, ( there was three of us ) and it was an all day job. Billy Bob and myself left there at 4:30 pm, right on time for the worst of Washington D.C. rush hour Friday evening traffic.
Now, what you've all been waiting for- pictures...and my comments, best I can recollect- and sorry, I forgot to resize the ones I took here with the digital camera.
a salmon fillet I smoked on the grill, indirect heat on both sides, strip of bacon on top, with pans of water underneath to keep it from being completely dried out.
the home made hot sauce I made today and put in recycled bottles. All the peppers came from my garden- and Jo's happy, because when I do this stuff I don't make a mess!

I must be off now, Joe's sending an IM.

I'm just mad...and angry...irate... and hurt-I don't know what to do. Really nothing I can do. Jobyna just popped me upside the head, then threw the phone book at me after I told her if she wanted to leave I'd help her pack, and haul her stuff...where ever,as long as it was away from here. Not the Brookneal phone book either, she went with the much, much larger Lynchburg book, complete with the yellow pages. I told her she was lucky she's a woman,or she'd be dead right now,cuz i'd have killed her ass.
This dog here has been here longer than I have. I remember the first time I saw him, standing on the front porch looking in the door grinning-he had an over bite or something, and he always looked like he was grinning. He was as big as a shetland pony and there wasn't a mean bone in his body. He was just a big overgrown puppy, loved to play. His tail was about 4 feet long,we always called him "big tail". When ever i'd come home he'd meet me in the driveway like Dino meeting Fred Flintstone. He chased cars, but he was very selective about which ones he chased. He'd be laying in the back yard sound asleep, but when he heard a particular vehicle he'd jump up and run to the road and chase it. Most he paid no attention to. He never bothered anybody or anything. We fed him,and I wormed him several times, because you could count every rib he had at first, but afterwards he was fine and healthy.
He was a happy dog, living a dog's life. Then the a-hole family moved in next door, with the whiny little brat-the one Jobyna sprayed "Off" on before, and he ran home crying like she'd sprayed him with high test gasoline and handed him a lit sparkler. She called me Tuesday crying when I was on the way from Birmingham to Pittsburgh and told me the dog had jumped up on the little bast-oh,might not oughta say that here, little...uh...kid next door, and his fat a$$ bitc...uh,oops-er,momma called the animal control officer to come get him. Never mind that they'd been playing with him when he jumped up on him, throwing toys to him,and he'd bring them back.
Animal control (the dog catcher) came and put a noose around his neck ,threw him in the back of the truck and hauled him off. She said if nobody claimed him in 5 days,he'd be euthanized. Killed-put to death-for doing nothing!
I wish I could go rescue him,but like my momma said, if I went and claimed him the next time he jumped on the little bast-sorry,I meant whiny ass little brat, they'd just sue me. I have less than an acre of land,no fence, and he's never been tied,so he'd probably go crazy or strangle himself if I tried to tie him. I'm glad I wasn't here when they took him away. I've been known to act first and think later-like the time I threw that big mug of beer, mug and all,on that softball team in the Red Lobster in Lynchburg. But that's another story.
Ive asked everyone I could think of if they wanted a dog-nobody did. He's a good dog-I liked it better when he was on the front porch barking at sun up wanting breakfast than since the sorry a$$ good for nothing deadbeat neighbors moved in...needless to say, they're not on our Christmas card list. I hope they're eaten by bears...just kiddin'
On second thought,Old Bill told me to always be honest-I really do hope they're eaten by bears. I thought a lot of that old dog.
Then I found out today that Rick Wright passed away Monday, the 15th. from cancer. Hope somebody has some good news...
    Big Tail update-good news-
    http://www.humanecampbell.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=910519
I called animal control before I left Monday to see about rescuing Big Tail and they told me to contact the humane society. I called them and I talked to a very nice man there, totally unlike the dogcatcher who picked him up, and seemed to enjoy her job way too much-she's the one who told Jobyna the dog would be euthanized in 5 days, which was totally false.
The guy I talked to at the humane society told me they had to hold him for 5 days before they could do anything, to give the owner time to claim him. If he wasn't claimed in that time then he became the property of the county, and would be put up for adoption. He said they only euthanized animals that were considered mean or dangerous and "that's a very friendly dog". I said "I know". I wish I could get him back myself, but i'd better not. I am gonna make a donation to the humane society though, and perhaps pay for his shots and other boarding fees that have to be paid before he can be adopted, that way he might be adopted quicker. If no one takes him i'm gonna get him and sneak him down to the shop so he can be a junkyard dog. He always told me he wanted to live in upstate New York though.

Went to the annual benefit at the Toga Volunteer Fire Department today. I took some pictures there at the car show, but I left and went to see my Mother and Father in Cumberland,Va. before everything was there...it had just got started good when we left, and was about over by the time we got back. Stopped by to see my oldest son on the way back, and gave him his birthday present...his birthday was August 19th,so I was A little tardy.
I took pictures of what was there before we left, then a fleet of big Mack trucks in Cumberland, then on the way to my son's house saw the "truck of the day"-A beautiful Diamond T (that's not how you spell beautiful is it? it just don't look right...never mind,i'll ask Rob later) sitting in Gary Barr's yard.So we stopped and I chatted for about an hour-if you check out Old Bill's website and read my entry in "How You Got Started in Trucking",he's the guy that was too young to drive out of state. We ran several trips to the west coast together before they found out,and was practically born in a truck. He can wheel! Hadn't seen him for years, and it was a great time! His daddy had a Diamond T,and I remember Gary driving it to school...really! I thought it was the same truck, but he found this one in New York and brought it home. It's smaller than the one his Dad had,gas engine w/a 5 speed and 2 speed rear.
So,i'll just put the pictures in a gallery because there's so many, and i'll be looking forward to seeing Paul's pictures from Watt's Mack's open house-would have liked to have been there, but it just didn't work out. I also took a few more of my mixer, because I waxed it yesterday, for the first time ever.
So check out my albums for the pictures,i'm starting to post them...NOW!
