  1. Man-that sounds good! I remember when I got my '45 EH running well enough to drive. I felt like the king of the world! Of course,I had lots of incentive-I knew I had to make it run well enough to drive home, towing my one ton flatbed truck,300 miles. (It did just fine-a little overheating on hills and couple of gallons of gear oil through the secondary box and out the rear seal, and a half gallon to top the axle.) Congrats!! So what's the next part of the project? Speed
  2. Barry; Man,I LOVE that shirt!! Do you still have 'em? If so,it's officially on my "GOTTA HAVE" list. Save me a LARGE. (Gotta wait till I get an unplanned debt paid off-about 7 more months.) That's SO COOL!!! Speed
  3. Cool-I appreciate you checking it out for me. I'm so in the dark as far as what transmissions use what PTO. I have a couple of PTO units out in the shop, but even the dealer in Reno couldn't venture a guess what they fit. He said each one is built specifically for the transmission and application, and there are no actual records of the build info. I THINK one is for an old SM420 four speed, the other is air shifted and looks to have a syncro in it,and is substantially bigger. I suspect it's for a Fuller 13 speed, because there were several of those in the same bin I got the PTO from. I guess the only way to find out is to just try mounting it on a 13 speed and see if it works. The guy in Reno mentioned I might have to install a gear in my transmission to drive a PTO ,as some transmissions don't come set up for a PTO;I hope that isn't the case on mine. Has anyone found any websites that have specific information on Power Take Off units, parts breakdowns, parts lists, fitment charts, maybe a drawing of how to set one up correctly? I talked to a couple of people that install tow beds etc. but they didn't know anything about older trucks or applications, and wouldn't offer any actual information to me. It was more"Well, bring it in,and we'll see what we can figure out." (at $90.00 an hour...) Sorry about all the questions-I just don't have much in this area for informational resources. Anyway,Thank you all for your help and information! I'd gladly put the names of contributors on the door of the truck for helping me get it ready to work. Speed
  4. Does anyone out there have any info regarding a PTO for my 1945 EH? According to the build sheet, the transmission is a TR 51,serial # is 305-27. I want to install a PTO because I now have access to an old military winch which happens to have fairly new cable on it,and I have some projects coming up that would be a bunch easier with the huge winch and the Any info you can share will be gratefully accepted! Speed
  5. I like that a lot! I was gomma ask if you could do something with an E model, but it'd probably look too much like a '36 Ford or something. I do think the E models need more public recognition though-I show my EH around as much as I can,but I can't carry the load alone...how about a T-shirt or ashtray showing the E series, something to commemorate these ol'dogs? Speed Ya might not have noticed, but I LOVE the look of the EH!!!
  6. That guy was really good! Probably the most stressful job he ever did. Reminds me of those high steel crane operators. A guy I worked with was running his backhoe cutting a 6 foot deep trench about 2 feet wide, and got to an old refrigerator box in his way. He never even slowed down;spiked it with one tooth of the bucket, tossed it about 25 feet out to the street and went on with his work. He also always tamped the dirt around the standpipes with the machine. That was when I was just a kid though,he's probably long since retired now. I was sure impressed by his skill. Speed
  7. My new dog was easy to install-the lowlife that stole the original one tore a big hole in the grille,so I didn't have to take anything apart. I was sure lucky they left the base intact-I don't know if I could find another one, especially a non-chromed one. If it turns out I have to remove my radiator to fix its bullet hole,I'll see what I can do to fix the grille. Looks like it'll be a long day tacking cut grille bars back together with the wire feed. Then, hammer the welds down, grind the high spots flat, clean the surface up and paint it. I think I can fix the radiator where it is,though,I still might work on the grille a little. don't really wanna get it too nice or it'll make the rest of the truck look bad. B'sides-it has CHARACTER! Speed
  8. And BTW-sounds like a really nice car you have. That 3.00 nine incher's worth its weight in gold with gas so expensive! Can you imagine where your fuel economy would be with a 4.88 or 5.13 locker in it? And if my converter's right, your truck's getting about 2.5 miles per US gallon. Speed Here's the converter I used. (Hope the link works!) http://www.teaching-english-in-japan.net/c...ters_per_liter/
  9. I would never kill anyone for tagging-if I did that I'D have to clean up the mess! If I hand him over to the cops, maybe I can have HIM do all the clean-up,as part of the restitution! ....Actually,we have a pretty good neighborhood here, that's why I think it was just a punk kid,a one-time-only kinda deal. There was a lotta tools and stuff lying around he could have stolen, but a little "tank art" was the only thing that happened. I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. Speed
  10. I don't know what wouldbe original on your truck, but I still have the HUGE 12 volt generator and regulator that had been on my EH when I bought it. Set up for dual 5/8 belts, and worked fine, but I changed it over to an alternator mainly for reliability. I was told the previous owner probably adjusted the six volt regulator up to 12 volts, and he may or may not have changed the generator over, the six volt one could produce 12 volts.(??) If you think you can use it,I'll send it to you for cost of shipping. Speed
  11. Thanks Rob; I'll give this a go as soon as I have room to bring the home and work on it. My Dad was an electronics wizard, and tried to teach me what he knew, but since it wasn't about engines and wheels it just didn't interest me. Now I wish I'd paid attention, but it's too late. Speed
  12. Well,I have the Citation running.it runs pretty good, and I think it'll even run better when I get all the vacuum lines connected where they really go. Took it for a little test flight today, and I think its gonna be a good'un. Its A/C compressor,s froze up,but that's why windows roll down, and something in the power steering bracketry is goofy and the pump pulley won't line up,so I skipped that. Heck-it doesn't steer any harder than my does. I guess I can move on to the next project on my list-re-install the new clutch in a Bronco II correctly, try to get the hood relatively straight, take the front bumper and grille off the "yard goat" Bronco II and put that on the "complete" one. Once that's done it'll probably become the current work truck, when the Harley isn't up to the job.(offroad exploration, hauling engines,towing,jump-starting,etc.) anything bigger than the Bronco's capable of,I can use "Mad Max",the Chevy one ton,and it That won't do it,I can drag out the BIG GUNS and drive the . I'm trying to arrange things so I use as economical a vehicle as possible for each task. I might have a trailer and/or a pick up sold,so I'll be able to buy some gas and get some work done soon. ( I hope I didn't just jinx the deals!!) Well, gotta go clean up the shop a little. BTW-my place got "tagged" a couple of nights ago. Some low-life spray painted a dirty word on the Oxy. tank of my torches out in the yard,I KNOW-I shoulda called the cops but it never even crossed my mind,I grabbed a can of black paint and sprayed over it. So NOW,I guess I'll have to start locking everything into the shop, and rolling it all back out every day. This sucks-it'll take me about an hour every day just to clear out the shop so I can work, and put everything back up so it doesn't get used to feed some asshole's drug habit. It wasn't a gang type incident,I think it was just a punk kid,but I'm probably lucky nothing got stolen. Life goes on... Speed
  13. Best deal I've seen out here today is $4.79/gallon at Maverick downtown and Pilot over in Carlin. At Pilot the price is the same for cash or charge. Speed
  14. Me too-free is good medicine, and I'm not out a cent if it doesn't do what I need done;my Norton expired some time ago so I was relying on a few free-downloads for different jobs. I've used Avast-it's pretty good. I also used "PC-cillin Housecalls" and a registry cleaner I can't remember the name of,they helped, but not enough. Apparently, this bug had been drifting around in my computer for a while;a couple or three months ago I started having some miscellaneous little troubles, first part of my desktop settings quit working and I couldn't change the desktop picture. As time went on,things just got weirder and weirder, the problems got more invasive, and finally one morning,my desktop picture came up bright red, with that "TOXIC" 3 half-circles emblem in bright yellow in the middle, and nothing would work. I couldn't even kill the pop-ups that were on the screen. "Control/alt/delete" just made more pop-ups that also wouldn't go away. When I had the shop blast my computer, they reloaded the operating system, with XP Pro,and a lifetime version of AVG;it works pretty well. Kind of a pain to work with though, because it stops just about everything you try to open, and you have to okay it before it'll load. AH,the high price of safety... My sister was always harping at me"You'd better be careful what you open, you'll end up with a computer virus!!" She hasn't missed a chance to remind me that if I had quit going to all those obscure websites looking for parts and car/truck/bike pictures,I wouldn't have this problem. Well,I guess it's MY turn now, because HER computer has a virus now,and it sounds like it could be a version of what mine had. Not so funny now,huh Sis? Well, better get to work. Speed
  15. Cool,Greg! Hope you'll post a couple of pics when you get the stacks on. Sorry to hear about the layoff though. I know how it feels-I've been laid off more than most people's whole families. Hopefully it will only be temporary and won't tank your finances. Hey-on these saddle tanks that pull from the top,if I coupled 'em both together through a "T",would the truck still draw from the tanks evenly,or would I have to build a transfer pipe between 'em down at the bottom? I'm thinking if I could do that,I could run those as the main tank and use the original tank as a reserve, and use one NAPA sender;that way,I'd have both the main tank(s) and the tank covered, and would be able to run it all with the Chevy switch and valve. (I can just see it-get on a stretch of road that tilts, and even though I had a quarter tank, the uphill pick up would suck air and I'd still be outta gas...) Well, thanks for the info;I knew somebody'd come along who knew about the gauge resistance. I'll probably figure a way to run all three tanks the right way. Speed
  16. Not sure about that engine in particular, but a lot of the old flathead engines had "mushroom" lifters-the bottom was wider than the barrel of the lifter. On those engines you have to either find a way to hold all the lifters off the cam and remove the cam first,or pull the engine and turn it upside down, and remove the cam. Either way,tha cam would have to come out,I hope that isn't the case with your engine. If it's built like my EN354,I have bad news for ya,bro. Mushroom lifters. Couldn't tell form the design illustrations in my manual if the lifters run in replaceable sleeves or just the finished block surface. Speed
  17. Sorry for being away for so long;my computer went tits up on me and it took a while to get the money together to "blast" the virus' out of it. Now it works again ,but they dumped all my pictures and all my shortcuts and Favorites. I have to go hunt all that stuff down again;don't know what to do about the pics, some were of vehicles I don't have anymore, and people who are now gone. I guess this would be what I consider a LEARNING EXPERIENCE! NEXT time,I'll be sure to TELL 'em to save the pics! Lately I've been trying to put a deal together to get started on scrapping, but the new scrap buyer up here isn't open for business yet. They're waiting on the railroad to get a siding to their property so they can move their stuff. So I'm using most of my time working on projects I've been letting slip. I fixed a couple of ongoing problems on the Harley, had a motor home given to me,gave it to Northern Nevada ABATE,built a storage shed and filled it with stuff I had stored in my shop, now I'm finishing an engine replacement I started a couple of years ago on the Chevy Citation my Dad left me when he passed away. I started on it a couple of years ago, things got busy so I tabled it;last winter I found a deal on a good engine, bought it and it sat in the shop on an engine stand until about a week ago. It's nearly ready to run now;I still have a little wiring and vacuum plumbing to figure out,an oil change,a carb rebuild,a cap-n-rotor and one CV boot to replace, and it should be ready to rock. Don't EVER let me work on another front wheel drive! Speed
  18. 1945 EH;EN354 gas flathead six,5 speed direct main,3 speed overdrive Brownie,6.86 rear,9.00-20's. Covereed 300 miles flat towing a '62 Chevy one ton duallie flatbed loaded with truck parts and furniture,(weighed about 8,900 pounds)averaged 7.1 mpg,and about 36 mph. Loved every minute of it,too. Speed
  19. DAMN!!! BEAUTIFUL truck!!! And it gets 30% better mileage than my one ton flatbed!!! Of course,it's WORTH about 30 times as much,too... Speed
  20. I'll do that after I change the input and output shaft seals. Thanks! Speed
  21. I'm planning to install two of the electric wiper motors on my '45 EH. Problem is,there's only a hole for the left side. Is there a template for the right one? Or does anyone have a better idea for wipers that mount over the windshield? Speed
  22. Thanks guys; As it turns out, there's a small size Sun tach on its way to me right now, given to me by a member of the Old GMC Trucks forum. I also already have a full sized one but the bracket and nut are missing;I'll engineer some method of mounting and probably put it in my '57 GMC dump truck. I'd thought an alternator-driven tach might be more in keeping with my old Maxville,Your input pretty much confirms what I'd always suspected of that design, not reliable, not accurate etc. Packer, this should work out fine for my truck,as it's already 12 volt. I was hoping to find a tach that topped out at maybe 4,500 or so,mostly so my engine'd look like it was going somewhere. Seems kinda lame to run an 8,000 tach with an engine that won't be seeing 3,000. No problem though,I can just cover the numbers over 3,and set the shift needle for 2,600,and all will be fine. Speed
  23. So-all this time I've been pumping 80W90 through my Brown-Lipe I've been wrong ;As bad as the input seal leaks with gear oil,I'm thinking with 50Wt. motor oil I might as well just pour it on the ground. Oh-well.I was planning to replace that seal anyway, just hoped to get some work done with the truck first. SO--What do I have to do to make this right? Is it possible to flush the box out and re-load with that Aero-Shell 50 wt? What should I flush it with? I've run it less than 500 miles on the gear oil-is there a possibility I haven't damaged the innards yet? Sorry to step on your subject, and thanks for your advice. Speed
  24. And honing your skills is never a bad investment;you'll be the one the "experts" come to when THEY can't find an answer! Speed
  25. They're drum brakes. I was told they have a tendency, when on a truck that isn't used much,to build up dust between the lining and rhe shoe web, which eventually pushes the lining out, causing the brake to drag and eventually the lining will loosen from the shoe. That's what this seems like. Thanks! Speed
