Tire Rim Frozen To Hub

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am having a problem getting the rims off the rear axle of my GMC and I need some advice. How exactly do you get the dual tires appart? The both wheels are stuck and they are hub piloted which leads me to believe they are rusted around the hub. I have tried to make a wedge out of a bar and hammer it on both sides but no dice. Also make a smaller long wedge to use in my air hammer and again it didnt budge. My next trick is to try and make a puller out of two chains and a 3 ton jack. Rest the jack against the drive plate and using 2 chains hooked to the hand holes try to force it off. I just dont want to make a bigger mess then I already have to deal with (brakes caught fire).

Any ideas?

Heat the rim in the area around the hub hole with an oxy acetylene torch. This will expand it slightly. Then keep trying to hammer or pry it off like you've been doing.

When re assembling, put some never seize compound on the rim/ hub interface so you don't have this problem next time.

Get a bigger hammer! lol! Try heating the rim around the hub just slightly and take a spray bottle of water and spray the hub a little. Make sure you spray hub and not rim so the hub will contract and rim will stay expanded. Let air out of tires first. Shouldn't have to heat it to much. Then hit with sledge. Should pop right off.

Arrgh the one thing I dont have.... a torch. Hmmm This is definatly the straw that broke the camels back. I need a torch outfit.

I use a four ton porta power with a "wedgie head", (spreader jaws bearing on both rim lips) to pop the outer dual wheel loose, and then a torch assy. if needed on the inside rim as mentioned. I don't like to paint unless I have to......

Usually, when the outer is popped off, the inner is much easier to remove at least in my limited experience.

Most 1 ton guys that have this problem leave the nuts a touch loose, then drive truck in circles to break it loose.

Our F450 was a mudd'r the first time we had to change a tire! After a few winter season those duals were welded to the hub.
