Self-adjusting Single-plate Ceramic Clutch Problem?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! We have a 2000 Granite dump w/ E7 427 & Fuller 8LL. The single-plate ceramic self-adjusting clutch apparently has reached the end of its adjustment AGAIN and needs to be replaced. A year and 2 weeks ago, last time we replaced it, the disc looked nearly new but due to lack of adjustment, had to be replaced.

We're planning on changing to a twin plate, manually adjustable clutch.

Is this a good plan? Why do we have these problems with the single-plate?

thanks!

Make sure the dust cover is not being left off of the bottom.I am a truck mechanic and I can tell you that a lot of people leve it off and the dirt will eat a clutch and I know some of you know what I am saying. There ant noting wrong with that type of clutch but why change form the old style to one that cost so much. Glenn Akers

Thanks, Glenn! We're pretty careful about dust covers and things like that, but I'll make sure.

We're considering the change 'cuz it's cheaper than replacing this ceramic clutch once a year. Out of 10 trucks, this is by far the worst clutch life we have.

Are you seeing better life out of these than we are?

This is not my area but I talked to the engineer who is responsible.

Mack does not have a single self-adjusting plate clutch. Was it replaced at some time? He does not recommend using a non-ceramic clutch because you won't get the right damper. What does the wear tab on the clutch show?

His suggestion is to use a CL7983 manual adjust clutch. It has a lot of face area with minimal clutch adjustment and long life. The Mack part number would be 11HB50P111.

If you could give the Mack part number of the clutch you are having problems with he would be interested in looking at it.

Once again this is not my area of responsibility but I hope it is helpful.

PS

(Replace the Pete's with Mack’s)

I love you man! :) I'll get the straight scoop on the clutch situation and let you know. I'm working with 2nd hand info. I'm the new guy on the job and all...

If the Pete dealer was a Mack dealer, I'd have all Macks. Back in the good old days, we had ~200 of them....

OK, the dealer was referring to our original "solo" clutch, the Eaton self-adjusting one. My boss assumed that "solo" meant single plate.

The dealer was recommending the same clutch 3P did, he was just using a different term.

Of course, the truck has already been back to the dealer twice to fix what didn't get fixed properly during the entire month they had it.

This is why I only have 2 Macks....
