  1. I've been perusing Western Mack pics now that I'm the proud owner of a '80 RW, and one thing I've noticed that puzzles me and was hoping for some insights:

All the WS Cruiseliner's I've seen have the Bulldog cradled in a horseshoe donning a (ridiculous or is it curious?) cowboy hat.

Why is this not-so-subtle nod to the truck's Western (including the spurs) origins missing on all the Hayward built Superliners?

  2. it's been done,I've seen Pete,KW,IH and Western Star sleepers used, only thing I can say it's better than nothing. I'd say the Western Star looks the least out of place. The Bentz built sleepers of an IH aren't bad,but they are pretty boxy looking.

    Here's a W900A sleeper on my '80 RWS766LST "Junkyard Dog".

That looks great to me. I think I actually like it better than an Able bunk.

  3. Lookin at your profile page you have a 1005 which is a early E9. I have both 866 and E9's. My 866 has the large head bolts and the E9's have the small but mine are 1990's vintage E9's. The fact is that your engine has been worked on and has a mix of bolts. Mack is know to change spec at any time.

Looking in the overhaul procedures manual it looks like both sizes of head bolt were used on the E9 but only one torque spec. That indicates the same size bolt but with a different head size. Head bolts have been a problem from the beginning and should be replaced when the head is pulled. The small head bolts are the only ones listed now.

I wouldn't worry about it until the head is pulled the next time. Don't fix it until it's broke.

Best guess would be that those 'newer' bolts were used to replace broken bolts? I've heard that broken bolts have been a problem....

  4. Small are the correct ones

What does it mean to you then that I only have three small ones on one head, and all the rest on the engine are the bigger ones?

I'm still looking into some sort of furnace cement and wrap to stop exhaust leak, just can't bring myself to tear it all apart for one leak.... I know we discussed leaks before....

  5. Definitely not factory on an E9. Looks like it had some head work done and damages the head bolt threads or broke bolt. Instead of Helicoil insert they taped it to the new larger bolt size.

So the smaller head(ed) bolt is the 'newer' or "older"?

  6. Damn that's loud.

There was a big time steel hauler from Somerset, PA that was running a single axle Crackerbox into the late 90's or possibly the 00's. I saw it on ebay a few times and last I saw him he was in an older, but very clean, IH 9670.

    Was it green?

    ---------------

I really need to read ALL the posts before I post a re-dumb-dent comment.

ANYWAY, that green crackerbox sure caught a lot of eyes in PA. I only spotted it once, and he made quite an impression. Rainy night, he rolled off I79 South onto 208, empty. If it weren't for the lights of the Outlet Mall I wouldn't have had such a good memory.

  7. I was just looking at a website that had the specs- I wasn't expecting a hotrod, but the 91 model V6 was rated at 125hp. It's only a 239 c.i. engine. They upped the hp to 180 for the '92 and '93 model.

    I owned a 1993 w150 5 speed with the V6... it was a turd.... but I didn't mind it.

I swapped a 318 into it.... super easy. What a truck then. Better power and mpgs.... loved that truck

    (Why'd I sell it????)

  8. For a quick fix I have used a sealer before. It's in the stove area at menards. It comes in a black tube like silicone and you have to spray water on your items you seal and is good for high temps.

Has else anyone tried the high temp furnace rope and cement with success? I'm thinking it would still need a clamp of some form to hold rope + silicon in place.

I am concerned about tearing anything apart for fear of ruining something and/or creating a leak somewhere else. I spoke with Francis, and he said $1200 for complete exhaust parts.... but in the post right behind this one a guy said after he had his worked on it STILL leaked!

I tried a cement for exhaust leak repair already.. it blew out 5 miles down the road.
