  1. Does anyone know where the orange wire 2nd from bottom goes? LOL. I was bored today so I figured I would tear the dash out and count the wires. I was getting about ready to paint the interior and thought I would pull the dash off and do a better job. Then I found some bad wire repairs so I spent the day cutting out unused wires and fixing others. No wonder I never get much done.

Jesus that looks like a lot of work.

  2. Well I got curious so I went to dynamat website, yeah I guess its the dynamat extreme I used, although I didn't think it was called extreme and the closest thing to the packs I bought is the bulk pack. I will try to dig mine out of boxes to see what it says, I've had it a couple years as I got a big discount so I bought 4 packs at once and I have two left. Looks like they have some other stuff I may try out in mine I maay do one layer of dynamat and one layer of that black foam version in 1/4" thick under my carpet and in the roof, firewall.

Yeah dynomat is awesome stuff I did the cab of my 84 V8 Superliner and it cut the noise and heat from the firewall and floor in half. I could barely hear my phone before and after it was like the cab of my 04 Granite, I did the floor of the Granite also, Macks have issues with radiant heat on the firewall of V8 trucks and the floor of all of em. I promise its worth the time and money, I have two project packs sitting here waiting on time to pull all the interior out of my 85 and do the whole cab in it. I have been a believer since I used it on the first truck and I've used it ever since.

How about the cheapie Lowes or Home Depot alternatives.?? Have any experience with that stuff?

  3. The bigger ones are original for the age of your truck. Generally head bolts break when the head gasket starts leaking antifreeze and the antifreeze gets under the head bolt and pops the head off.

I have heard that they should be changed every time a head is pulled.... I know this engine has been apart, but they must have reused most of the bolts. As a course of preventative maintenance should that be a concern for a truck I'd like to put to work?

  4. I've been perusing Western Mack pics now that I'm the proud owner of a '80 RW, and one thing I've noticed that puzzles me and was hoping for some insights:

All the WS Cruiseliner's I've seen have the Bulldog cradled in a horseshoe donning a (ridiculous or is it curious?) cowboy hat.

Why is this not-so-subtle nod to the truck's Western (including the spurs) origins missing on all the Hayward built Superliners?

  5. it's been done,I've seen Pete,KW,IH and Western Star sleepers used, only thing I can say it's better than nothing. I'd say the Western Star looks the least out of place. The Bentz built sleepers of an IH aren't bad,but they are pretty boxy looking.

    Here's a W900A sleeper on my '80 RWS766LST "Junkyard Dog".

That looks great to me. I think I actually like it better than an Able bunk.

  6. Lookin at your profile page you have a 1005 which is a early E9. I have both 866 and E9's. My 866 has the large head bolts and the E9's have the small but mine are 1990's vintage E9's. The fact is that your engine has been worked on and has a mix of bolts. Mack is know to change spec at any time.

Looking in the overhaul procedures manual it looks like both sizes of head bolt were used on the E9 but only one torque spec. That indicates the same size bolt but with a different head size. Head bolts have been a problem from the beginning and should be replaced when the head is pulled. The small head bolts are the only ones listed now.

I wouldn't worry about it until the head is pulled the next time. Don't fix it until it's broke.

Best guess would be that those 'newer' bolts were used to replace broken bolts? I've heard that broken bolts have been a problem....

  7. Small are the correct ones

What does it mean to you then that I only have three small ones on one head, and all the rest on the engine are the bigger ones?

I'm still looking into some sort of furnace cement and wrap to stop exhaust leak, just can't bring myself to tear it all apart for one leak.... I know we discussed leaks before....

  8. Definitely not factory on an E9. Looks like it had some head work done and damages the head bolt threads or broke bolt. Instead of Helicoil insert they taped it to the new larger bolt size.

So the smaller head(ed) bolt is the 'newer' or "older"?
