Looks like still plenty of them in the right neighbourhood. Iranians post a lot of pics on Instagram and it seems they're doing well with old Macks. I have no idea on how they can supply themself with spares due to the sanctions. But trucks run so that means with a help of Allah they do :)

I have a kind of idea roaming over my mind to go to Iran and check the things myself. From talks with people who lived there I learned it's possible. Just not sure their officials would have no questions due to US entering stamps in my passport. And what seems more important is a point of view of US consul in ambassady when I request US visa for the next time after such voyage :)

Let me know if you go, I'll come along. ;)

  2. What year was Hayward closed? And what was the production # of trucks produced there from its beginnings? Its curious to me that there were Macks being built there, but today you don't see ANY Macks in California.. or very few. I remember talking to a guy from the Bay are who bought a brand new Superliner in '81(?) He owned it for 35 years.. even he said he had the only one around..

The axle-mounted steering arrangement was a huge mistake. We sold far more steering gears than normal. The average customer replaced the steering gears three times over the life of the truck.

Was this also true for the Western Superliner's?

That would be an extremely reliable truck. Won’t be the torque monster feel of a 475 Cat but it will be consistently reliable, easily serviceable and will drive very nicely.  The EM7’s felt more powerful than the E6’s which were kind of slushy in the CH’s.   The mid to late 90’s CH models are excellent money makers and don’t exhaust a driver.  The only real downfalls were that the cabs tended to rust around the rear windows and underside corners if they ran in salt and weren’t cleaned much.

This one is a 1990. Was there some change (other than the VMAC) that occurred in the mid-90's?

I have driven a lot of heavy spec CL's but here is my old 2000 CH. It was double frame, 14,000 front, 46,000 Eaton rears on Mack air leaf. E7 460 with an Eaton 18 speed.

One of the smoothest riding and best handling trucks I have ever driven. Also the best factory headlights I ever had. Never even had a need to use the extra 100W auxiliary lights.

It just inspired confidence driving it. No matter if it was white outs or freezing rain, it never did anything that made you feel uneasy.

That truck sure worked good. Used to haul bark and logs with it. It was like a bulldozer. I had the temp sensors ripped right off the diff pots and it never got stuck. I can't explain it, but that truck just worked better than most I have had.

The downfall.....the E7 full of casting sand and electronics gremlins. When it decided to run though it pulled good. I ran with guys that had same loads and trailers and they had Series 60 500's and 475 Cat's. Yes they could pass me on the hills, but I could keep them in sight.

So the cat peed on the cushion-is the seat structure sound?  Just take cushion to an upholstery shop and have them duplicate.  Unless you are spending a lot of time in this seat and want the latest technology.

Seems to me all  the old Bostrum air rides did  a decent job back in the 80's -assuming bags weren't blown.

My cushions (the foam at least) appeared to be glued to the metal backing... . .   I'm not familiar with upholstery work, do you think the foam could be replaced?

If this isn't a daily driver you might want to stick to a bostrom from a price stand point. Hard to justify a grand for a hobby truck seat. But if you're in it 40 hours a week then I'd say it's worth it.

I think you can get just the foam and seat covers from Mack.

I was having a hard time finding anything new under $1000. The plate under the seat should be able to accommodate most any seat then?

  8. My Mack still has its original Bostrom seat that I've contemplated replacing in the past, now it's become much more urgent update. Last night a cat got into the cab and matriculated on the drivers seat, thankfully I found it straight away and pulled it out before sunup.

Now the question is, what do I replace it with? I know almost nothing about truck seats, or what "style" I need to be looking for. I don't get around other trucks much to compare, and was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. Is there a common mount used in the industry or is it all custom fit for an 1980 Mack?
