  1. I have driven trucks with every engine you can think of and the E9 is by far the strongest puller of any of them, Im not just talking about these new sissy trucks with detroit 12.7's and Mercedes 12l either. I have had a Detroit series 60 500 making more like 550, two N-14's one 460 and one cranked up 525 that rear wheeled 570 now that one did pull good, I had two 475 Cat's, 3-350 Mack's 2-460's all but one 350 ETECH's and a 427 ASET AI and after I went nuts on the guys at Mack about that one pulling like a freakin GEO METRO and STAXXS got ahold of the computer the 427 was a beast it ran away from the 460's on a hill. But I still have to say an E9 440 with a trtxl 107 trans and 4.42 gears is the best pulling truck I have ever sat in and I got 6mpg, you cant do that with a new MP10 and an M-Drive.

  2. Ok AL and AL2 was 4- 1/4 from bottom of frame rail left front drive axle to the bottom edge of the suspensions main support with brakes off level ground full air psi Maxair 40 early prior to x mark on suspension was 5-1/4 later version was 4-7/8 think you have the AL or AL2 hope this helps.

    Showoff!

  3. Very Nice and glad i'll be able to talk to another Mack person. I hope Jim maynard will have his R-600 at the show.

    mike

Well Mike I got my new mirrors on today, did a little painting on the frame, removed some old b.s. wiring from light installs in years past, and did some more buffing looks like I should make it to cookeville but the inside wont be presentable. I have a new front carpet that was in the sleeper when I got the truck but no rear and nobody has a rear blue carpet, Im gonna go see an upholstry guy I know here in Murfreesboro to see if he can match it if not I guess Ill get the factory rubber floor for it. I have to get some seats or have these re foamed/covered and fix the wall behind the drivers seat but Ill get her close enough for gov't work for this years show. I have to come so I can win the slow truck race again then Ill have two trophys from two superliners at the same show.
  4. Detroits were a poor boys engine, they were quit reliable but they were two stroke and you had to drive them like you were mad at them all the time, i have nothing against them and i thank it is amazing that they would even run at all and pull as good as they did. Point being that in there hay days they where a good choice with engine like 220 cummins and gas engines but now days they have been so many better engine built over the past 30 years that the only one i would want is the 8v 92 unless it was in a old cabover that all it did was go to the shows, it is fun to lung they down and them floor them and see all that black smoke come out of them, but try pulling 80000 lbs with a 318 everything will pass you.

Well believe it or not the first third and 5th trucks I drove had detroits the first two were 6v92 silver's the last was a 60 series, and a whole lot of our railroad maintenance of way equipment has 2 stroke detroits, everything from a 3-53 to an 8v92 which I just swapped in a Plasser ballast stabilizer. actually it was an 8v92 silver I put in it, I have a pic somewhere I think, I have been working on a machine with a 4-53 this week and did some injector work on a 4-71 last month. I have a 6v53 found for a possible pickup truck repower I am playing with in my mind well see if I ever do it. I guess for now my superliner project will keep me busy I have plenty to do there to get it to the ATHS show in Cookeville in two weeks.

  5. Oh my GOD I sure hope they arn't Cat A-Cert Motors, or we are sure to lose the next war!!!

    BULLHUSK

I havent been in one of them new fangled HET's I had to deal with the old 2 strokers but they pulled pretty darn good (I guess they should geared to max out at 45 mph) I know that all the G.P. International Armored trucks we had in Iraq were powered by a CAT Acert 475 and an Eaton 18spd autoshift, I drove one once and was not a fan. But I have a pic.

  6. Where to get a cdl? dont they still sell Cracker Jack's? I got mine with a friends bus, I just memorized the book drove around a little then went to take the test and got a class B then I used a dump truck and backhoe trailer for my class A. I agree with the previous Pre Trip comment, make 100% sure you have it down do it over and over then do it again, your examiner may not have you actually do the pre trip but walk around and tell them what you would be checking for. Never forget the steering and suspension components thats when lots of people lose points, they are not in plain sight but they want to hear you say you are checking for loose, missing or broken spring hangers, springs, shocks etc. dont forget the steering box, drag link, tie rod, brake chambers, slack adjusters and shoes, and the driveline your suppoed to check your u-joints, carrier bearings and driveshaft for loose, missing, broken or damaged components. Most states allow you to take a pre trip book or help guide with you put a star on the page in areas you know you have a lot to remember. ( I used to help train on CDL at Oprlyand Hotel Transportation in Nashville TN) I wish you luck and even if you dont use it much having a CDL will be a blessing when you do need it, and most employers look at it as another qualification to add to your resume showing you took some initiative to get better prepared for what you do before they hired you.

  7. If it starts right up, sounds stout and looks good, it must not be a Mack motor. Mack engines are ugly and sound horrible. If you're lucky, it could be a Detroit.

    Ben

I am at a loss for words but here are some I remember, if your trying to find a detroit follow the oil trail, if you like an engine that sounds like a weedeater on crack get a detroit, If your oil bill is higher than your fuel bill it must be a detroit, your trying to stop the oil leak on your detroit....ha,ha,ha,ha yeh right, good luck with that!

  8. you ever get pissed again and want to sell it,call me quick before you cool off.

Ha, well I mouthed off and priced my last three Macks high thinking the other guy would balk but he handed me a check every time maybe my idea of high isnt high enough. I miss my 84 but this one has more potential and was alot cleaner than the other one when I got it so I guess I better keep walking away when I get frustrated so I dont price this one, although I guess I would let it go for a Million or so without too much thought.

  9. is there any truth to the tell that the last E-9's were slightly over 1000 cubes?

I used to have the p/n for oversized liners/pistons they add a few cubes over the 1000 mark I cant remember what the actual displacement was now Ill try to find the info. I know the Killer Mack and Buckeye Bulldog are over 1000, way over I was told. not to mention quad turboed and nitrous and water injected, you know for fuel economy.

  10. I have asked about other cabs from that order and from what I can find they were the only 5 crew cab R's ever built by Mack and after that they never stamped another wall or roof panel out, they only made enough parts to make the 5 then kept the dies on ice until they were told there would not be another order by fdny. I wonder where the stamping dies went for the panels, you never know they may be in a warehouse in PA somehwere collecting dust waiting to be discovered like so many GM dies have been over the years.

  11. Lets see some pics , if its fits in a R model I want to see how

You need to forget about that idea quick unless you want a divorce, you have the right engine to hot rod we just have to do the math to get you a good Turbo and then its just timing and fuel. I still think a series 60 wastegated Turbo would make it run like hell it has the right volumetric for making tons of com for that e6.

  12. unless there was some majic involved an E9 wont fit under the hood of an RD or RS only an RW Superliner it hangs over the frame on both sides Ive got one outside now. The early Mack v8's had bolts in the center of the valve covers, the E9 has 4 bolt covers with the bolts on the perimeter two up top and two on the bottom.the 865 has two in the center.

  13. I tried the grease thing when I put a cam in my E-7, (DID NOT WORK). You can't get any left over oil out of the lifters and it seeps down and makes the lifters drop. I called my local mack dealer who I buy my parts from and were happy to loan me the magnets to do the job. If I had to do it again. I would push the truck outside and take the excavator and roll the truck on its side to do the work. LOL

On an E7? wow you must have run into every possible issue I think that E7's in superliners are the easiest trucks I have ever touched, you can almost lay down behind the engine under the hood, I got used to working on T800KW's and set back Freightliners at Howard Baer you cant get two fingers around the engine, they SUCK!

  14. Ryan, do you think it will be ready for the show in Cookville, Tn by the end of this month?

    mike

Im trying, I got under it today trying to finish the exhaust, I put a few more pieces inside and I went and picked up my tires so I should be ready to drive up there, it wont be real pretty but driveable. I am going to try to just spray the frame real quick and get everything in good roadworthy condition then go back thru it this winter and stretch the frame and do the paint on it right, I hsould have the exhaust finished right and the engine painted by the show I wont have new fenders on it then.
