Great movie!!!

Looking for an original battery box cover for my 79 R model.

I ordered one and should have it by end of week. I’m glad they’re still available. I’m pretty particular with things and matching gauges is a must. My truck was missing the plastic filler cover over the extra gauge hole so i figured instead of finding one of those I’d put a boost gauge in. Who doesn’t like more gauges anyways right !?

I think I found a gauge. The gal at the local Mack dealer searched all R model gauge part numbers which began with 7MT and came up with 7MT232 for a 0-50psi manifold pressure gauge. I’m guessing this will be the correct one. I was able to locate a picture of what I think it looks like. I plan to get one on order, dealer quoted $118.

Thanks for all the comments. I’m excited to have it. Work has been super busy so I haven’t done anything except take it up and down the road a few times. The old cool power sure has a nice whistle to it. All fluids look great but I will probably change everything to start fresh and go from there.

Yes they had one. I have not seen one for sale in years. the one I saw in a company truck I drove did not have numbers on the gauge. it just had dash marks in what I assume 5 or 10 psi increments.  I bought an aftermarket auto meter for my R model as I could not find a factory gauge 7 years ago

Great to hear. Mice suck but better then needing a new engine.

Anyone have any pics of one? Also are they still available through Mack?

Was there ever a factory boost gauge offered for the R models that matched the other gauges?

I always think patina wins over a perfect shiny paint job. I’d leave as is.

Welcome to the forum. Some nice looking hardware you’ve got there! 

I’m looking to possibly purchase a truck to use on the farm hauling grain. What are your thoughts on a R model with a 168” wheelbase? We mostly haul short distances. I know it won’t ride the best but I’m young and can handle that. How common were short wheelbase trucks? I see some pics of them from time to time, was a short wheelbase  mostly used for lowboy trucks or what was the major benefit of being short?

Has anyone ever read this book? I just happen to run across it and might order a copy.

I have one on a pallet. I would guess in the 400-500 lb range.

Also check the pass side frame rail near front tire as the vin will be stamped into the frame and should match door tag. Nice to confirm as cab or door could have been swapped at some point.

Price updated to $5600. Looks like a solid truck at a fair price.

Is there anyway to tell visually if an injection pump has been adjusted or turned up on one of these engines? Is there a factory seal wire of sorts? Like for instance on the older Cummins 12v there is a tamper proof screw that must be removed which was always a tell tale sign. Anything similar on the old Mack’s?

I’m kicking around the idea of purchasing a truck to use on the farm for hauling grain. I have found a late 70’s R model that I may have some interest in. It has the ENDT676 with a TRXL107 and 4.17 gears. How would this do for a farm truck? What kind of mph could I expect with this setup?

The engine is the tip turbine with side mounted intercooler and is painted red in color. Was that an original engine color used in late 70’s? Would this be considered a 285 hp engine? I read some places calling it the 300 maxidyne or was that in later years.

So I gather they ride better then camelback but not as heavy duty?

I didn’t take the pics, I know not much to see. I’m told it’s Mack suspension and it’s not camelback or air ride so I’m thinking taperleaf. 

Was this a common used suspension? What’s your opinion good or bad? I’ve never heard much about them.
